Starting in 1957 as a disc jockey in Miami, King went on to spend 25 years as host of CNN’s Larry King Live, where he interviewed many of the world’s biggest newsmakers. After retiring from CNN in 2010, he created Ora TV, his digital network and production studio, home to Larry King Now and PoliticKING with Larry King. He has been honored with many of the most prestigious awards in journalism and television. A renowned philanthropist, King founded the Larry King Cardiac Foundation and also established a $1 million journalism scholarship at George Washington University’s School of Media and Affairs for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Humanitarian Award Honorees PROFESSOR HILDRETH (HAL) AND DR. BETTYE WALKER Hildreth (Hal) Walker, Jr. and Dr. Bettye Walker founded the A-MAN, Inc. STEM Cen- ter in Inglewood and also initiated it in South Africa at the request of President Nelson Mandela. This February they opened the first chapter of the National Space Society (NSS) on the African continent, the Cape Town Space Society (CTSS). Hal Walker operated the Ruby Laser system during the Apollo landing which integrated with a reflector placed on the moon by Astronaut Buzz Aldrin. An interactive exhibit showing Hal’s work is now located in the National Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Dr. Bettye Walker, a pioneer of STEM education, a university professor and an LAUSD school principal, launched a pilot project in the 1980’s providing STEM outreach for at-risk and under-served populations which was funded by UCLA. Caucus Legend Award HENRY WINKLER Henry Winkler has enjoyed over four decades of success in Hollywood and continues to be in demand as an actor, producer and director. He currently co-stars as acting teacher Gene Cousineau on the hit HBO dark comedy, Barry. This past September, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his role on the series. In 1973 he won the iconic role of Arthur Fonzarelli in the TV series Happy Days. Behind the scenes he has also made his mark as an executive producer or producer on TV series and specials for 19 years, including MacGyver, Better Late Than Never, Mr. Sunshine, Sightings, and the ABC documentary Who Are the DeBolts and Where Did They Get19 Kids?, which won the prestigious Humanitas Prize. Caucus Distinguished War Veteran CHASE MILLSAP Chase Millsap is a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army Special Forces. He served three combat tours with the 1st Marine Division in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq and then five years as a U.S. Army Green Beret leading counter-terrorism missions to South West Asia. He produced the Nat Geo film, The Captain’s Story to highlight the struggles faced by America’s wartime allies. Chase has a B.S. in History from the U.S. Naval Academy and M.P.P. from USC. He is the Chair of the Los Angeles Mayor’s Military Veteran Advisory Council, a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and is Chief Content Officer at We Are the Mighty, a military and veteran focused media company. Special Achievement in Educating New Filmmakers CRISTINA KOTZ CORNEJO Christina was raised in the U.S. and Argentina. She received an M.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a B.A. in International Relations from USC. As an independent filmmaker, Cristina’s debut feature, 3 Americas, received DVD distribution and streamed on Netflix. Cristina’s short films have screened at festivals around the world and her documentary short film, Jewel and the Catch, was selected by Outfest to be part of UCLA’s Film and TV Archive. Excerpts can be seen in the opening credit sequence of season 3 of Jill Soloway’s series, Transparent.
