Door forse ruimtelijke ingrepen en toevoeging van andere functies zoals een bioscoop en horeca is het gebied vitaler geworden. Er is extra winkelruimte toegevoegd en het winkelaanbod is verbreed, onder meer met enkele grootschalige winkelformules op het Ankersmidplein. De vestigingen van Saturn, Primark, The Sting en New Yorker versterken het bestaande winkelaanbod. De (regionale) aantrekkingskracht van het centrumgebied is groot. Het winkelgebied bestaat uit diverse deelgebieden. In het centrumgebied zijn drie supermarkten gevestigd. Het gaat om een vestiging van Albert Heijn aan de Hermitage (1.450 wvo m2), Vomar aan de Czaar Peterstraat (1.350 m2 wvo) en de biologische supermarkt Goody Fooods (400 m2 wvo). Pale veal is 'manufactured' by keeping the young animals penned up and fed on a low- Dutch supermarkets Jumbo, Plus, Aldi, Lidl, Boon, Coop, Dekamarkt, Hoogvliet, iron milk diet for six months. A Nettorama, Poiesz, Sanders, Emté, Spar en Vomar have all undertaken to stop Dutch animal rights campaign selling the pale veal within the next few months - also because the Wakker Dier has managed to get this veal out of most supermarkets now. publicity campaign created a high level of consumer awareness, and people stopped buying it. Vote it up! Supermarket chain managers who were convinced almost immediately after viewing the publicity material from Wakker Dier, Dirk, C1000, Super de Boer, AH, Bas, Digros and Deen, stopped selling the pale veal within weeks from the start of the campaign in September 2008. "We are happy that with this campaign, nearly all the anaemic veal has now disappeared from our supermarkets,' said a spokesman for Wakker Dier.

The retail market is fairly consolidated with a market share of almost 60 percent for the top 3 food retailers. Sustainable food (including organic products) is one of the most important growth markets in food retail. The market share for private label products and also for convenient, healthy and innovative products continues to be strong. SECTION I. MARKET SUMMARY Dutch Food Retail Market Approximately 80 percent of the Dutch food retail outlets are full service supermarkets, operating on floor space between 500 and 1,500 square meters located downtown and in residential areas. Retailers with full service supermarkets have responded to the need of the Dutch to have these supermarkets close to their homes. The remaining 20 percent includes mainly convenience stores (near office buildings, city center, motorways and train/metro stations), some wholesalers and just a few superstores (conveniently located alongside highways in shopping malls and industrial parks). Top 3 food retailer formulas in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Lidl, have a market share of 58 percent.
