Powazek Master of Arts, Graduate Program in Art History University of California, Riverside, June 2020 Dr. Kristoffer Neville, Chairperson When the Albertine Dukes of Saxony gained the Electoral privilege in the second half of the sixteenth century, they ascended to a higher echelon of European princes. Elector August (r. 1553-1586) marked this new status by commissioning a monumental tomb in Freiberg Cathedral in Saxony for his deceased brother, Moritz, who had first won the Electoral privilege for the Albertine line of rulers. The tomb’s magnificence and scale, completed in 1563, immediately set it into relation to the grandest funerary memorials of Europe, the tombs of popes and monarchs, and thus establishing the new Saxon Electors as worthy peers in rank and status to the most powerful rulers of the period. By the end of his reign, Elector August sought to enshrine the succeeding rulers of his line in an even grander project, a dynastic chapel built into Freiberg Cathedral directly in front of the tomb of Moritz. -

The report begins with a discussion of the European Communities' 1970 directive on the teaching of migrant workers' children, including its background, the debate held about it, the initiat:an of pilot projects during the debate, and the project methods. Subsequent sections outline, for each of the four country projects, the particular situation of ethnic minority children in the country's school system as a whole and the design of the project to enhance education of migrant children in that country. In each country, the pilot project was implemented in one city. The cities were: Genk (Belgium), Bedford (England), Paris (France), and Leiden (the Netherlands). Next follows a comparative analysis and assessment of the four programs, focusing on two major program aspects: (1) introduction of migrant children to the host country language and culture; and (2) native language instruction. -

It is based on intensive statistical study of common soldiers in Electoral Saxony during the Thirty Years War, through which I both analyze the demographics of soldiers’ backgrounds and discuss military wages in depth. Drawing on microhistory and anthropology, I also follow the career of a single regiment, headed by Wolfgang von Mansfeld (1575-1638), from mustering-in in 1625 to dissolution in 1627. This regiment was made up largely of people from Saxony but it fought in Italy on behalf of the King of Spain, demonstrating the global, transnational nature of early-modern warfare. My findings upend several assumptions about early seventeenth-century soldiers and war. Contrary to the Military Revolution thesis, soldiers do not appear to have become more disciplined during this period, nor was drill particularly important to their daily lives. -

Chapter 2 LANDSCAPE: THE DUAL CONSTRUCTION 3 More than 150 years ago, the conservative cultural theorist and folklorist Wil- helm Heinrich Riehl asserted that every age had its specific “eye for landscape.” What seemed ugly to one century was beautiful to another. During the “pig-tail period” (the 1770s and 1780s), the Black Forest had been seen as barren and unpleasant, but in Riehl’s day it was discovered as a picturesque landscape.1 If this observation is true, Clio is beginning to develop a keener eye for landscape in our time. The changing landscape and the changing gaze at the landscape have been topics of historical study for some years now. A study of the landscape of the autobahn requires that one address, at least conceptually, what is meant by landscape. For it was landscape, not environment or nature, that was the goal and effect—or at least the contested entity—for the roadway planning under examination here. All participating social groups—from landscape architects and roadway engineers to journalists, landscape painters, novelists, and the users of the autobahn—mostly had landscape in mind when they spoke or wrote about the spatial consequences of the roads. Consciously or not, they were tapping into one of the most complex discourses of modernity. A quick glance at the geographic, art-historical, philosophical, and historical litera- ture about the concept of “landscape” already reveals that we are dealing with an ambiguous and multivalent term that resists a convenient definition. The land- scape ecologist Ludwig Trepl has emphasized that landscape is at the heart of the most diverse discourses.2 Since the contemporary landscape concept represents the confluence of various traditions, identifying an unbroken and coherent land- scape concept would amount to an analytically useless narrowing. -

The period between the two World Wars, known in Germany only as the Weimar period, was an era of magnificent chaos and profound artistic accomplishment. Often called the golden age of German film, some of the most extraordinary and original films arose out of the political and social chaos and search for meaning in the lost war effort. Many Germans lost their lives in World War I and the reasons for entering the war seemed inadequate in retrospect. The desire to find meaning is visible in the art and politics of the Weimar Republic. In this work I will discuss the role of three films from this period in order to show how they reflect the historical moment of their production. Films from the Weimar era, especially art films have frequently been grouped under the term Expressionism, which as a descriptor for film quickly grows problematic. Expressionism, like any other -ism is full of contradictions. -

David McLintock, Penguin Books, London, 1996, pp. 335, RRP $16.95 (paper) Narelle Hanratty, Monash University I've always found gratification in my fanatical faith in exaggeration, I told Gambetti. On occasion I transform this fanatical faith in exaggeration into an art, when it offers the only way out of my mental misery, my spiritual malaise. I've cultivated the art of exaggeration to such a pitch that I can call myself the greatest exponent of the art that I know of. I know of none greater. No one has carried the art of exaggeration to such extremes, I told Gambetti, and if I were suddenly asked to say what I really was, secretly, I'd have to say that I was the greatest artist I knew in the field of exaggeration. [1] It's all here - the escalating hyperbole, the grandiosity, the connoisseurship, the importuning of the witness - the unmistakeable voice of one of Thomas Bernhard's protagonists holding out, fittingly enough, on the topic of exaggeration. On the occasion of the publication of Bernhard's biography, reviewed recently by Murray Bail in The Age , [2] I look at his last novel, Extinction and its fine contribution to the sensibility of lugubriousness. Thomas Bernhard spent his short life (he died in 1989 at the age of 58) in Austria. Despite the relative brevity of his career, he produced numerous novels, plays, librettos, poems, stories and memoirs. As Bail notes: ".. -

In order to trace the ways in which the cultural and linguistic displacement that are inescapable features of twentieth century European history are reflected and paralleled in literary constructions of identity, it focuses on the interplay between the autobiographical and the fictional, examining a range of texts within each writer’s oeuvre. Thus a writer’s autobiographical texts are read in the context of their fiction in an attempt to identify the problems of translating lived experience into literary discourse. The introduction offers a brief survey of the theory of autobiography in order to suggest the problems involved in classifying this notoriously hybrid genre, particularly in its modem literary forms.
