Classes for January – December 2016

Color Play on Learn some of the most popular techniques Janis Thompson for applying MX to cotton, Saturday, February 13 and yardage. We will in a zip-lock 12 – 4pm bags. Stuff glass jars. Students will July 23 learn these basics in dyeing three Japanese 10am – 4pm wrapping cloths (furoshiki) and will come $80 + $45 Material Fee away with an extensive instruction manual to help them further to explore shibori.

Lichen Dyeing Many colors can be derived from lichens Cheshire Mayrsohn including reds, purples and blues. The dye Sunday, April 10 derived from lichen is colorfast and often 11am – 4 pm requires no . In the Pacific Northwest $65 + $15 Material Fee we live in a lichen rich environment, they are all around us. Each participant will get three silk scarves (premordanted) to dye. We will also dye wool yarn, both mordanted and unmordanted. (Min 4, Max 10 students)

Intro to Acid Dyeing Explore the many ways to mix and apply acid Janis Thompson dyes in the studio with an experienced dye Saturday, July 9 mistress. We will address ways to apply dyes 12 – 4 pm to various fiber preparations, based on what $50 + $12 Material Fee we want the outcome to be. Materials provided. Safety, formulas and stock solutions will all be discussed.(Max 8 students) Eco Print Janis Thompson Using wildcrafted twigs, ferns, flowers & Wednesday, June 1 or various plant matter, we will bundle these Wednesday, Aug 31 or things in a silk scarf, then simmer to "print" the pigments onto the fabric. Ice Dyeing This innovative class explores using the ICE Janis Thompson melting as a delivery system for Acid or MX Wednesday, August 17 dyes. 5-8pm You can dye an item of clothing (cotton, wool $50 + $15 Material Fee or silk), fabric or yarn with this crazy technique. We pre-soak the goods in mordant, then scrunch, cover with Ice and sprinkle on the powdered dyes. There is almost NO WAY to predict how the melting ICE will take the path of least resistance, with gravity as it's friend, to place the dyes. Really FUN!

Students need to bring an apron, gloves and a dust mask. Dyes and Fabric included in Mat fees. (Min 4, Max 8 Students)

Mushroom Dyeing Blood red, sunset orange, golden yellow, olive green, Cheshire Mayrsohn mouse gray, dusky blue, chocolate brown – what do these colors have in common? They are all pigments Sunday September 25 found inside various mushrooms. Come explore the 11am - 4pm magical and ancient art of dyeing with mushrooms! $65 + $15 Material Fee Our workshop begins with learning how to properly prepare animal fibers (wool and silk) with an environmentally friendly mordant, a necessary process that will make our mushroom dyes light and colorfast. You will learn about some common and easy to identify mushrooms that grow in Oregon and are used for dyeing…and then the magic begins. We will prepare some dye baths with local mushrooms and let the color begin to flow. Each participant will have the opportunity to experiment dyeing a beautiful 100% silk satin scarf and a skein of yarn.

Please wear clothing or an apron that can potentially get stained and bring rubber gloves if you have sensitive skin. Bring a pen and a notebook if you wish to take notes. Some photocopies will be provided. The materials fee covers all materials needed for the dye workshop. Intro to Natural Dyeing Learn how to dye with weld, onion skins, Janis Thompson madder, , logwood and indigo! We will Saturday, Feb 27th or learn the basics of mordanting, extracting Saturday, August 20th pigment, making a dye bath, overdyeing, as 11am – 5pm well as color shifting in an after-bath. You will $60 + $15 Material Fee be ready to explore on your own after this class. (Min 4, max 8 students)

Felting

Intro to Feltmaking Want to learn to make felt? From scratch? Classes are With soft merino fleece? Then this class is for 2 – 4 pm or 6 - 8 pm you. Mixed Media Felted Scarf Make a SOFTLY felted scarf or two in class Janis Thompson using a combination of Merino, silk, colorful Saturday, July 23, 12-4 pm or threads and glitz. We will sandwich our fibers between two pieces of fabric, pin them Wednesday, October 5 or together and put in the WASHING MACHINE! Rug Hooking Nantucket Rug Hooking - with Learn how to make small treasures using WOOL Yarn a hook and yarn in this fun ½ day class. Janis Thompson We will make a Lapel Pin in class to put Wednesday, Sept 14 on your fave coat or give as a gift. 5 - 8pm "Nantucket" hooking is specifically yarn - $50 + $15 Material Fee on linen we will explore ideas for working on rugs and larger projects. Spinning

Introduction to Spindle Spinning Game to try something twisted? Learn to Beki Ries-Montgomery make yarn the old-fashioned way with a drop Saturday, April 16 spindle. No prior spinning experience is necessary. We'll learn and practice the skills Saturday, June 18 to transform wool into yarn without fear of Saturday, Aug 13 dropping the spindle. From there we'll cover Saturday, October 29 spindle plying and finishing your first skein of 1 – 5pm spindle-spun yarn. $50 + $11 Material Fee Materials Provided: Wool fiber (2 ounces multi-colored merino from ETC) and drop spindles to borrow during class. Materials to bring to class: Drop spindle, if you already own one, otherwise, none. Feast Art Yarns Learn how to spin the really Wild Art Yarn Janis Thompson that commands the Big Bucks! In color Wednesday, March 9 or teams, we will build a spinnable Feast, using Wednesday, Nov 2 a special layering technique developed by 5-8-pm Janis. Carded batts, dyed rovings, ribbon, $50 + $15 Material Fee yarns, angelina sparkles, all kinds of fluff! Min 2 Max 12 Participants We spin and ply this into a Glorious, one of a kind skein! Delicious!!!

Beginning Spinning Saturday Class This is an introductory course for those who Janis Thompson or Patty Huffer wish to learn to spin their own yarn. Students Saturday, March 19 will learn the fundamental techniques of Saturday, May 7 handspinning. ETC has wheels to use during Saturday, July 16 class. Each session is a one day class. We offer Saturday, December 3 this class every other month. 10 am – 3 pm (Min 2, Max 8 students) $50 + $10 Material Fee

Spinning Mohair Mohair locks are soft, lustrous and divine! Janis Thompson Learn how to spin this “Greased Lightning” Wednesday, August 12 with an experienced teacher. We will spin from 6 - 9pm handfuls of gleaming locks and roving to $50 + $15 Material Fee produce curly and loopy yarns.

Get to Know Your Wheel If you have a wheel and have taken the most Janis Thompson basic class, this is the next one! Learn how to Saturday, January 30 correct over-twist, adjust your tension, Saturday, June 11 treadling, drive band and whorls. Roving Reveal Yes, you can make more than one type of yarn Janis Thompson with your roving. Learn how to spin one multi- Wednesday, February, 17 5-8 pm colored roving into four different structures; or singles, spiral, 2-ply, and Navajo. Each will Saturday “reveal” a unique yarn. Play with color in this September, 3 workshop. Students should bring spinning 1-5 pm wheel and all accessories. $50 + $12 Material Fee (Min 2, Max 8 students)

Surface Design Thermofax Screen Printing Printing with the thermofax machine is Marilyn Robert rewarding and fun. Participants will find or Saturday, April 16 or Saturday, create images to print onto cloth or t-shirts, October 8 bags and napkins, and will learn what it takes 10am - 5pm to make a successful print. Students will take $75 + and individual materials fee home the screens that they make in class. With care, these screens may be stored and reused multiple times. This technique in surface design is well suited to quilt artists and others who want to “make their mark”. A supply list will be given to registrants.

Serti Method for Silk Painting In this workshop you will learn the serti Ariana Schwartz method of silk painting using gutta resist and Saturday and Sunday Jacquard silk dyes. The class will cover resist April 23-24th or application, basic color mixing and a several August 13-14 different painting techniques to help you 10 am – 4 pm achieve varied affects and textures on silk. $195 + $30 Material Fee Each student will create several small sample Beginner, Intermediate squares and one finished 22” by 22” silk scarf. If you want to design your own scarf, please draw a 22” x 22” design prior to the workshop. Otherwise, you can use a design provided by the instructor or create a freehand design during the workshop. Note: If you have inexpensive watercolor or chinese style paintbrushes, please bring them to the workshop. I use my silk painting and watercolor brushes interchangeably, but note that dyes can permanently stain paintbrushes. (Min 2, Max 8 students)

Survey of Japanese Traditional Have you ever coveted an exquisite Japanese textile, awed by its texture, artistry, and John Marshall craftsmanship? Want to find out more? Then Wednesday-Thursday this class is for you! John Marshall has been May 11-12 collecting Japanese textiles for half a century 10am – 4pm and he is scouring his vast collection to share $175 the very best with you. During this two-day class, John will be presenting a survey of all major and minor traditional textiles - from designing, to , to dyeing. There will be an abundance of samples for you to put your nose to, including a robe woven of crane feathers, items from John's collection of clothing worn by Emperor Meiji, felted yak wool, and woven gold temple hangings. will range from lenos to tapestries to elaborate jacquards, velvets to taquete (nishiki) to mizuori. With a special focus on natural dyes, we'll cover bingata, yuzen, and aizome, to name just a few techniques. And wait! That's not all. Ever want to drape yourself in bagworm casings? John will be showing off his pieced bagworm sports jacket - sure to be a hit among you entomologists. John's goal is to have you live and breath Japanese textiles during this two-day immersion. Feel free to bring your camera, loupe, and anything else (except clipping scissors!) that will help you take notes and record your experience.

Fukusa (Traditional Japanese Gift When Japanese present an elegant gift, it is Covers) often hidden under a square of precious silk. In this workshop we will cover the design aspects of fukusa, delve into the wide range of weaves and dye techniques used to produce these treasures, and discuss the stories behind some of the more popularly used imagery. We will also be incorporating a range of traditional techniques as John guides you in creating your own unique fukusa - truly destined to be an heirloom of the future! Materials fee $125, includes use of John's equipment and all consumables (dyes, , and so on), along with a DVD covering most of what is presented in class. (Max 15 students) Block Printing Learn to create beautiful, intricate patterns on Ariana Schwartz cotton and silk using basic block printing Saturday techniques. In this workshop, you will work June 18th with thickened fiber reactive dyes and textile 10 am – 4 pm paints in combination with hand carved $95 + $ Material Fee wooden blocks from India. You will learn how to mix, print and set thickened dyes and learn tricks for printing with textile paints. We will

also cover techniques for building your own printing blocks from linoleum, eraser, craft foam and found objects. During the workshop, each student will create several samples and one finished piece that can be used as wall hanging or table runner.

Introduction to Katazome Katazome is the traditional stencil printing Marilyn Robert technique of Japan. It involves the application Saturday-Sunday of rice paste through a stencil onto cloth, and Sept 17 -18 then dyeing the cloth. In this class we will use 10am - 5pm . On day one, participants will create $195 + $20 materials fee the stencils, prepare the rice paste and apply it to the cloth. On day two, when the paste is dry, the cloth will be dyed. We will consider both historical imagery and contemporary designs, and look at a collection of traditional katazome textiles. A student supply list will be given to registrants.

Weaving Rigid Heddle Weaving for Ages In this class you will learn to warp a rigid 12 to Adults heddle loom with materials for a scarf and Suzie Liles then weave it. This class will give the very Friday, January 22 or basics of weaving. You may use your loom or Wednesday, March 23 one of ETC's looms. 10 am – 4 pm $60 + $20 Material Fee

Beginning Weaving This is a 4-week course in learning the Suzie Liles art of handweaving. Students will use Wednesdays, Jan 6,13,20,27 or Eugene Textile Center looms. Students will Thursdays, March 3,10,17,24 learn about weaving patterns, drafts, 10 am – 5 pm $195 + Material Fee preparing the loom, weaving and finishing techniques for the woven cloth. In this course, students will finish three woven projects.

Pine Needle Coiled Necklace In this beginning workshop learn the basics Workshop for coiling with this sampler necklace. Using Sheri Smith Holgate pine needles, your color choices of waxed Saturday, January 30 linen and Czech seed beads you will create a Saturday, May 14 or unique piece of art! Saturday October 8 10am - 4 pm Explore a variety of stitching techniques, $75 + $10 Material Fee along with adding beads to start you on a path of making baskets, ornaments, earrings or pendants. Complete your project with a piece of leather cording.

Bring sharp pointed embroidery scissors and your imagination!

Pine Needle Basket Completed basket will be approximately 3”x 2–day Workshop 3” x2” deep. Sherri Smith Holgate Friday & Saturday, Feb 12-13 Day 1 Begin your basket on a 2” wood slice Thursday & Friday, June 9 - 10 or center with a wheat stitch. Wrap a coiled row Saturday & Sunday, Nov 5-6 and begin up the sides of the basket. 10am - 3pm $170 + 20 Material Fee Day 2 Learn how to shape your basket using the swirl pattern, and how to add beads between your rows. Taper your needles with an “Open V” stitch to complete the project. Finish the basket off with a coating of bees wax.(Min 2, Max 6 students)

2-Day Learn to Weave This is a fast-paced workshop designed to Suzie Liles provide participants with basic weaving skills. Friday and Saturday ETC looms will be used. We will be learning to February 5 – 6 10 am – 4 pm warp a loom and weave a scarf. $140 + $30 Material Fee This class is for the beginner who would like to learn to weave.

4-end blockweaves + summer and 4-end blockweave (taquete), is an extremely winter versatile structure for rug weaving. Offering Jason Collingwood many of the design possibilities that are Mon –Tue –Wed achievable in 3- end blockweave, it is March 14-15-16 nonetheless visually very different.The 10am - 4pm threading allows for plain weave and this $295 + $5 Material Fee means we can explore summer and winter in this class, opening up a whole new range of design options. Shaft switching in relation to this weave structure will be full explained. Class will include instruction on how to set up one's loom correctly for rug weaving. Twining at the beginning and end of the rug, darning in of the loose ends, use of the temple and many other invaluable tips for successful rug weaving.

Each class concludes with a look at rug finishes, a few of the many finishes will be demonstrated.

Designing Handwoven Handwoven transparencies feature inlaid Transparencies designs on a background of sheer plain weave. Doramay Keasbey & Dramatic positive-negative contrasts, Suzie Liles enhanced by the interplay of light, are Saturday & Sunday characteristic of this unique medium. The easy March 12-13 technique assures satisfying results using a 10 am - 4 pm simple loom and odds and ends of yarn. $195. 00 Examples of inlay effects, finishing, and mounting options will be shown. Participants will be guided to try a variety of techniques for developing original designs. Plain weave and simple inlay techniques will be practiced to produce a small decorative, translucent hanging for a window or wall. Inkle Loom Basics No weaving experience necessary! The inkle Daryl Lancaster loom is portable, easy to warp, easy to weave Tuesday, May 24 off, and makes beautiful belts and 10 am – 4 pm bands. Daryl uses it to trim her $80 garments. Every weaver should own one. They are inexpensive and children as young as third grade can learn to use them. Inkle Looms are available if requested.

Starting with a PowerPoint presentation, participants will learn to make heddles for the loom, follow a draft and warp the inkle loom. Proper techniques for weaving a tight even band with good selvedges will be explained. Supplemental warp and weft techniques will be covered as well as a more intermediate technique of 2:1 five thread standard pick-up. Participants will be able to finish a small sampler by the end of the day.

Inkle Loom Weaving Advanced For those who are looking for the next step Techniques: the Next Step with this simple two shaft loom, this is the Daryl Lancaster class for you. Learn 1:1 name draft, paired Wednesday pebbles and freeform runic pick up techniques, th May 25 all on the same warp! 10 am – 4 pm $80

Beginning Rug Weaving Plain weave (an introduction to rug weaving) Jason Collingwood An ideal course for those wishing to try out Friday, Saturday, Sunday rug weaving for the first time, though with July 8-9-10 enough 'tricks' to also suit the more 10am - 4pm experienced weaver. $295 + $5 Material Fee Students will learn how to make a strong serviceable rug (plain weave being an excellent structure for rugs). Initially weaving stripes and spots using two colours, learning how to overcome the selvage problems inherent in each different design. Clasped wefts, crossed wefts and compensated inlay will be covered, all these new techniques giving the weaver more freedom with design.

Rug Weaving 2/2 Twill The course will include straight twill, broken Jason Collingwood twill and twill on opposites. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Within the above three structures many two July 11 – 13 and three colour sequences will be explored, 10 am – 4 pm each giving their own unique design. $295 + $5 Material Fee Crossed wefts (parallel and contrary motion) and clasped wefts will be applied to 2 /2 twill, further increasing the design possibilities. Pick - up and 3 /1 double faced twill will also be looked at. This class will also include some work with Shaft Switching, students learning how to adapt their own looms.

Linen and Lace Workshop Are you afraid to weave with linen? In this Suzie Liles workshop, you'll discover that linen is a Friday, Saturday, Sunday wonderful, user-friendly fiber and learn the July 15,16,17 best techniques for warping, weaving, and 10am - 4pm finishing linen fabrics. Participants will thread $250 + $30 Material Fee four- or eight-shaft looms in various sizes of linen yarns and in round robin fashion, explore Huck lace, Bronson lace, Swedish lace, various hand- manipulated laces, and bead leno. Beginning, intermediate or advanced skill level.

Warp & Weft Weaving Have you ever admired the Japanese, SE Asian Marilyn Robert and Indian ikat cloth? Wondered how it was Thurs – Sun 4 days done? This workshop offers a comprehensive August 25- Aug. 28 introduction to this gorgeous ethnic weaving 10am – 4pm style. Examples of this cloth, many museum- $350 + $20 Material Fee quality pieces, will be available for inspiration. Participants will learn step-by-step design skills, preparation of the ikat warp, and indigo dyeing technique during the first 2 days. Weft ikat techniques will be introduced during the last 2 days, and students will weave warp ikat, weft ikat, and compound ikat to conclude the workshop. Students at all weaving levels are welcome. Because of the process, this workshop requires 4 full days to achieve admirable cloth. (Min 4, Max 8 students) Eugene Textile Center provides a retail shop for equipment and materials for the fiber arts, as well as a comprehensive studio environment. ETC offers classes and studio support to individuals in the community with an interest in handweaving, surface design on cloth, and other non-woven fiber techniques.
