For in this age of Kali Yuga this is the greatest benefit for all mankind, the only way to truly alliviate misery and suffering, warming the heart with the rememberance of Lord Sri Krishna. 4 4 In the month of January ISKCON NYC came 7th in the national book distribution charts! 5 Much of this can be attributed As February began Srila to the fact that Sri Padmapat Prabhupada moved his room Singhania worshipped the from 501 to 307, remaining in Lord in His Dwarka lila past the same building on Seventy- times, which meant he desired second Street. Govinda's Vegetarian Lunch 99 The Chaitanya-charitamrita offers detailed lists of preparations cooked for Krishna and then relished as Krishna- prasadam by Lord Chaitanya and His devotees. Lord Chaitanya was concerned that prasadam should be served as nicely as possible, and He often served the devotees Himself. Of course, no one would eat until the Lord had begun, and so after serving everyone for a while He had to sit down and begin eating, as some of His senior followers continued serving. With this background the members of the Krishna consciousness movement have been busy for the last thirty years cooking and distributing large amounts of prasadam, and therefore the movement has sometimes been referred to as “the kitchen religion.” Pictured are residents, community members and visiting devotees carrying on this tradition, preparing offerings and most importantly cleaning the kitchen. 10 Radha Govinda Gifts His hard work over the past year, and his readiness to be on call for service at any hour has won us all over. • IJ..Ta,.Dharma, and Sanfltana Dharma in Indian Culture: a Critical Appraisal
IJ..ta,.Dharma, and Sanfltana Dharma in Indian Culture: A Critical Appraisal G.C. NAYAK Saniitana dharma literally means eternal law, principle or norm. But in order to understand the concept of Saniitana dharma, as it is used in our cultural heritage, it is important that we first have a working knowledge of what dharma stands for. The word dharma is not easily translated into the English language. Dharma has been used in different contexts to means different things, but it is usually understood as that principle or law which sustains, supports or maintains (dhiiralJaY individuals as well as the social order, and when applied beyond the context of society to a broader universal context, it would mean that law which sustains or maintains the world as a whole, the universe itself. It may mean a supporting principle that is inherent in things tl1emselves; it may also denote that principle which needs to be followed for the sustenance of the individual and of society. Radhakrishnan in his Religion and Society talks of dharma as "the norm which sustains the universe, the principle of a thing by virtue of which it is what it is." In the Brh adiira~tyaka Upani~ad1 , we ftnd dharma being identified with satya or truth and being extolled as the most powerful of all, stronger than even the ruling class. It is possible for a man who is righteous to vanquish one who is physically or otherwise strong, and therefore there is nothing greater than dharma. 3 !Jta of the !Jgveda, as a matter of fact, is an antecedent of dharma, where it finds a more varied application, in the context of the universe, society as well as the Li fe of individuals.

  • Dharma Vahini Chapter IX
Chapter IX. All May Seek Spiritual Wisdom igh and low, rich and poor, male and female —all are affected by illness, and all have the right to seek the Hdrugs that cure illness. So too, all people are affected by the illness of birth and death and all have the right to the drug, named knowledge of Brahman (Brahma-vidya), that is its effective cure. That is the heritage of all. According to the stage reached by each, the degree of development attained in spiritual discipline, and the extent of assimilation of the drug, each person will improve in health, that is to say, in peace and equanimity. But one thing has to be specially mentioned: along with the drug, the regulations regarding the mode of living have also to be strictly adhered to. The drug, Brahma-consciousness, has to be supplemented and strengthened by the appropriate dharma as well as by cultivation of devotion, wisdom (jnana), and discrimination (vairagya). Dietary and other restric- tions are essential components of the treatment of illness; so also mere initiation into knowledge of Brahman (Brahmajnana) is not enough. Without equanimity (sama), self-control (dama), and the other moral and spiritual excellences, no one, be they emperor or bondsman, high-born or low-born, can reach the goal. Though everyone is entitled to the heritage of knowledge of Brahman, only those who equip themselves with the qualifications can receive it. One must be strong enough to undergo treatment and to digest and assimilate the medicine, right? If the strength is not there, the great physician Himself will not certify that the patient can take the medicine.

Some of them would object even to this illustration of their engagement with what have come to be understood as two different world religions, and perhaps they are better described as pilgrims in uncharted territory. Nonetheless, my debt and gratitude, particularly to those I am privileged to call friends. Many librarians and archivists have been helpful and generous in my researches over the years. Related to this thesis, particular thanks are due to the librarians and archivists at the United Theological College in Bangalore, the archivists of the CMS collection at the University of Birmingham, and the librarians and archivists at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. The late Fr. James Stuart of the Brotherhood House in Delhi provided access to books and abundant encouragement, and his successors there have continued to provide hospitable access. Thanks are also due to Bishop Raphy Manjaly and Rev. Joseph D’Souza of the diocese of Varanasi of the Roman Catholic Church for making copies of The Pilgrim in their possession available to me.

  • Hindu Epic – II 09 January 2008 Time Reckoning Is Very Scientifically Done by the Aryans
Hindu Epic – II 09 January 2008 Time reckoning is very scientifically done by the Aryans. If at all any human mind has thought of time reckoning on a scientific basis it is only the Aryans. The other civilizations they started counting from the time of man’s birth or his death or his or some kind of an event, like a coronation of him. It is not the real time reckonings. Kings may come and go, even sages may start a new religion or whatever and then even the religions they don’t stand they are alive till some other religion is propounded. So things are passive. There is one thing that is perennial that is the astronomical phenomenon. The planets going around the Sun along with the Earth. So, earth is one of the members of the planetary family doing Pradakshina, circumambulating the Sun. So when to start this time reckoning is, let us say on the zodiac that is 12 signs mesham, midhunam up to meena raashi. Aries to Pisces, the first point of zodiac let us assume it is the first degree of Aries. Suppose all the planets have conjoined at one particular moment they have all joined there at one particular moment and they all started separating in their respective speeds in the same path and once again they have come and joined there and the same conjunction has repeated. The time between these two events could be a minimum of 43.2 lakhs of years. Till then at any time even five planets join there and two planets will be away, one planet will be away.

  • Hinduism = Sanatan Dharma
TRI-STATE HINDU HERITAGE SCHOOL Lets go over the definition of religion… Cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with Ardur (vigor, energy) and faith. Something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience Hindu is a word drived from Sindhu, which is a river in undivided India (Now Pakistan) Persians invaders couldn’t pronounce Sindhu so they started saying Hindu. Thus the religion followed by Hindus became Hinduism Sanatana means Eternal Dharma means Laws The principle or law that orders the universe. Individual conduct in conformity with this principle. PATH OF RIGHTEOUS LIVING Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law), Samanya Dharma (general duty), Visesha Dharma (special duty), Varnashrama Dharma (duties of caste and Order), Svadharma (one’s own duty), Yuga Dharma (duty of the age or period in history), Kula Dharma ((duty of family), Manava Dharma (duty of man), Purusha Dharma (duty of male), Stri Dharma (duty of female), Raja Dharma (duty of king), Praja Dharma (duty of subjects), Pravritti Dharma (duty in worldly life) and Nivritti Dharma (duty in spiritual life). Manu-Smriti means Laws of Manu In Hindu traditions, Manu is a title accorded to the father of Mankind, and also the very first king to rule this earth, who saved mankind from the universal flood. • Kirtanam (Chanting) Why Is Chanting the Holy Name the Yuga Dharma for Kali Yuga?
Gopal’s Fun School (GFS) RS No. Gopinath-Nitai-007 Name: _________________________________ Date: ______________ 2. Kirtanam (Chanting) Why is chanting the holy name the Yuga dharma for Kali Yuga? There are different processes to achieve perfection in each age. In the Srimad Bhagvatam (12.3.52) it is explained that: kåte yad dhyäyato viñëuà / tretäyäà yajato makhaiù dväpare paricaryäyäà / kalau tad dhari-kértanät In Satya Yuga, the process to achieve perfection is meditating on the Supreme Lord. In Treta Yuga the process to achieve perfection is performing yajnas. In Dvapara Yuga the process to achieve perfection is deity worhip in the temple. In Kali Yuga the process to achieve perfection is chanting of the holy names of the Lord. In Kali Yuga, it is not possible to perform the processes recommended in the other three yugas. Why is that? In the Srimad Bhagavatam (SB 1.1.10) it is explained: präyeëälpäyuñaù sabhya / kaläv asmin yuge janäù mandäù sumanda-matayo / manda-bhägyä hy upadrutäù In Kali yuga, we cannot practice all the processes practiced in other ages because: People in the age of kali are: 1. Short lived, 2. Quarrelsome, 3. Lazy, 4. Misguided, 5. Unlucky and, 6. Always disturbed. Therefore in Kali Yuga the only method recommended is the repeated chanting of the holy names of the Lord. Chanting was powerful in other ages too, but it is especially powerful in Kali Yuga. Simply by chanting the holy name of Krishna one can be liberated and return home, back to God Head. So even if you are able to perform other processes of devotional service you can make chanting the main method for your own spiritual progress.
