• ABSTRACT Title of Document: the ANTI-CONFUCIAN CAMPAIGN
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE ANTI-CONFUCIAN CAMPAIGN DURING THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION, AUGUST 1966-JANUARY 1967 Zehao Zhou, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Directed By: Professor James Gao, Department of History This dissertation examines the attacks on the Three Kong Sites (Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, Confucius Cemetery) in Confucius’s birthplace Qufu, Shandong Province at the start of the Cultural Revolution. During the height of the campaign against the Four Olds in August 1966, Qufu’s local Red Guards attempted to raid the Three Kong Sites but failed. In November 1966, Beijing Red Guards came to Qufu and succeeded in attacking the Three Kong Sites and leveling Confucius’s tomb. In January 1967, Qufu peasants thoroughly plundered the Confucius Cemetery for buried treasures. This case study takes into consideration all related participants and circumstances and explores the complicated events that interwove dictatorship with anarchy, physical violence with ideological abuse, party conspiracy with mass mobilization, cultural destruction with revolutionary indo ctrination, ideological vandalism with acquisitive vandalism, and state violence with popular violence. This study argues that the violence against the Three Kong Sites was not a typical episode of the campaign against the Four Olds with outside Red Guards as the principal actors but a complex process involving multiple players, intraparty strife, Red Guard factionalism, bureaucratic plight, peasant opportunism, social ecology, and ever- evolving state-society relations. This study also maintains that Qufu locals’ initial protection of the Three Kong Sites and resistance to the Red Guards were driven more by their bureaucratic obligations and self-interest rather than by their pride in their cultural heritage.

  • The Dam Keeper’ Delivers Oscar Nomination for Studio Alumni
http://nyti.ms/1vbRp0c AWARDS SEASON Embracing a Fantasy From Their Pixar Past ‘The Dam Keeper’ Delivers Oscar Nomination for Studio Alumni By CHARLES SOLOMON JAN. 29, 2015 This year’s nominees for the Oscar for animated short film cover a variety of subjects and styles. But the film that has generated the most excitement among professional animators is “The Dam Keeper,” a painterly short by Daisuke Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo, former Pixar art directors who have started their own studio. “There is a sameness to much animation, so when a film like ‘Dam Keeper’ comes along, it reminds us that the boundaries of animation have barely been explored,” said Don Hahn, producer of “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Told entirely in mime, “The Dam Keeper” focuses on the withdrawn, dutiful Pig, who maintains a giant windmill that keeps toxic fumes away from his village. Pig is mocked and bullied at school until the impish Fox, who has a gift for caricature, arrives, and the two become fast friends. A misunderstanding leads to a crisis that ultimately reaffirms their friendship and the value of hard work. “The Dam Keeper” has been screened at more than 75 festivals and won numerous honors, including prizes from the New York International Children’s Film Festival, Anima Mundi in Brazil and the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. The film begins a theatrical run on Jan. 30 as part of a program of Oscar-nominated shorts. Although Mr. Tsutsumi and Mr. Kondo are highly respected for their work as art directors on the hit Pixar features “Toy Story 3” and “Monsters University,” “The Dam Keeper” is their first film as writer-directors.

Lacking of the documentary materials is one of the main reasons. Aiming at promoting the related study, the paper organized and analyzed the news reports from The New York Times which is one of the mainstream public media in Western Society. The paper reveals much more historical details about Pu Yi from 1929 to1934 contributing to frame a typical and historical media image of him, depending on the reports. Simultaneously, the paper attempts to analyze how such an image was embedded in western liberal ideology and progress valuing system. 1. Introduction Pu Yi (PuYi, Pu-Yi), an insignificant little man in his early twenties, is a disregarded factor in the tragic drama of Modern China. The western society isconcerning that with the Manchurian problem standing prominently, there is an enhanced interested in one puzzling figure in that vast, complex situation---Pu Yi , heir of of Manchu rulers, and “Regent” of the State of Manchukuo.
