TEHRAN – A sculpture by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro located in the courtyard of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) has recently been refurbished. The polished sculpture from the series “Sphere within Sphere” (Sfera con Sfera) was unveiled during a ceremony attended by Italian Ambassador Mauro Conciatori and TMCA Director Majid Mollanoruzi on Monday, the Persian service of MNA reported on Tuesday. The refurbishment of the bronze sculpture is part of the project entitled “Dusting the Earth” organized by the Feyznia Family Foundation, an Iranian private organization in charge of Iranian and Italian art projects, in collaboration with the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation. Speaking at the ceremony, Mollanoruzi said the ceremony is a symbolic act to show the good relationship existing between Iranian and Italian artists. Explaining about the project Mollanoruzi said, “We first negotiated with Pomodoro, and later with the Feyznia Foundation, which carried out the project.” “The symbolic dusting of the sculpture can help draw the attention to the issue of the environment and respect for artworks,” he added. Ambassador Mauro Conciatori expressed his thanks to those who helped in the project and said that the sculpture needed to be refurbished since its surface, which reflects the sunshine, had been exposed to air pollution over the years. He added that the special attention to preservation of the sculpture in Tehran reminds us of the historical connection between the two countries. The ceremony was continued by screening a short film, which covered the different processes used for refurbishing and restoring the sculpture. Pomodoro currently lives and works in Milan. Some of his “Sphere within Sphere” sculptures can be seen in the Vatican Museums, the Trinity College in Dublin, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus and the University of California in Berkeley.
