Travelers Championship Announces Third Concert Event to Take Place CONTACT: Tara Gerber Travelers Championship 860-502-6815 [email protected] TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCES THIRD CONCERT EVENT TO TAKE PLACE Ventana al Jazz series artist “The Leslie Cartaya Quartet” added to concert lineup HARTFORD, CONN., June 16, 2015 — The Travelers Championship today announced a third concert event will take place at this year’s tournament. A free live show featuring world-famous Ventana al Jazz series artist The Leslie Cartaya Quartet will take place on Thursday, June 25. Ventana al Jazz joins an entertainment lineup that already includes the Powerstation Events Concert Series—Dennis DeYoung and the Music of STYX on Friday, June 26, and Bret Michaels on Saturday, June 27. “Join us at the Travelers Championship to enjoy a full day of world-class golf, and then sit back, relax and take in the smooth Latin sounds of Leslie Cartaya,” said Nathan Grube, Tournament Director for the Travelers Championship. “Concerts at the Travelers Championship have been a fan-favorite each year, rounding out a day at the golf course with great entertainment.” The concert will begin at approximately 7 p.m., soon after the last golfer of the day finishes his round, and will be held in the MetroHartford Alliance Fan Zone located near the center of the course. The concert is free with the purchase of an “Any One Day” ticket on Thursday, which provides fans access to the tournament and all entertainment throughout that day. “We could not be happier to be partnering with the Travelers Championship as it continues to deliver world-class entertainment to complement the PGA TOUR’s best and brightest stars,” said Pedro Zorrilla, President of Ventana al Jazz. “We are excited to bring a culturally significant show to the Travelers Championship and hope that everyone enjoys our Latin Jazz series.” Ventana al Jazz at the Travelers Championship is presented by Univision TV Hartford-Springfield, The River 105.9 FM (iHeartMedia) and CTLatinoNews.com.     A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings routinely made the pop, R&B, and jazz charts during the 1980s and ’90s, Kenny G‘s sound became a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations. He’s a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of “contemporary jazz” charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz. Kenny Gorelick started playing professionally with Barry White‘s Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He recorded with Cold, Bold & Together (a Seattle-based funk group) and freelanced locally. After graduating from the University of Washington, Kenny G worked with Jeff Lorber Fusion, making two albums with the group. Soon he was signed to Arista, recording his debut as a leader in 1982. His fourth album, Duotones(which included the very popular “Songbird”), made him into a star. Soon he was in demand for guest appearances on recordings of such famous singers as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Natalie Cole. Kenny G’s own records have sold remarkably well, particularly Breathless, which has easily topped eight million copies in the U.S.; his total album sales top 30 million copies. The holiday album Miracles, released in 1994, and 1996’s Moment continued the momentum of his massive commercial success. He also recorded his own version of the Celine Dion/Titanic smash “My Heart Will Go On” in 1998, but the following year he released Classics in the Key of G, a collection of jazz standards like “‘Round Midnight” and “Body and Soul,” possibly to reclaim some jazz credibility.

Comer Dr. Thomas Lanners Outside Committee Member ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Completing this dissertation and my doctoral program at Oklahoma State University would not have been possible without the support of many people over the past ten years. I would like to start with my advisor and chair, Dr. Allen Finchum, who not only happens to share my interest in smooth jazz, but has always been there for me. One could not ask for a better mentor, as he was always so giving of his time, whether we were discussing my research, talking about my experiences as a graduate instructor, or him just taking an interest in my personal life. I feel blessed to have been able to work with such a special graduate committee, comprised of Dr. Jon Comer, Dr. Brad Bays, and Dr. Tom Lanners. Dr. Comer sparked my passion for quantitative methods and spatial analysis, and Dr. Bays taught my very first course at OSU, a wonderful and stimulating seminar in historical geography. With Dr. Lanners, I could not have asked for a better fit for my outside committee member, and I feel privileged to have been able to work with a musician of his caliber.
