Being a musician is hard enough; why start your own label too? I had to start the label in order to fulfill my mission as an artist. I have a responsibility to solidify as deeply as possi- ble my musical ties to the culture where my music comes from. Do you or did you have trouble making connections (or rather others making connections with you) since jazz isn’t native to Russia? Actually jazz has been in Russia since the ’20s, so peo- ple pretty well know that it exists. Although the aver- age Russian may have less association with jazz than the American, jazz has a more specialty status in Russia. For example, the Russian multi-instrumentalist David Golo- shokin has an official status of “People’s Artist” which is a huge deal. He’s on national TV all the time and is known the way a mainstream media personality would be known in the U.S. The Russian tenor saxophonist Igor ➤ jazzweek.com • October 9, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Artist/Label Q&A: Ilya Lushtak (continued)

I love it because this is the music that comes from the heart of a very special part our American culture. It reaches back to the America that inspired the entire world with its sound of swing and the blues; that America that taught the world the yet unknown skill of totally fluid, harmonically mature and rhythmically mind-bogglingly interactive improvisation that is still studied and developed across the globe. This music also reflects a time within our country when culture and education were still more developed than commerce. That’s a heavy concept, and a heavy sound. That really changed in the last 45 years, and it has really changed the basic elements of the music, these guys who I’ve been working with both in and outside if Lineage are living products of that world. examples of a phenomenon that is the culmination of what musical artistry de- veloped over the last four centuries of Western Civilization. Once commerce overtook culture, however, that development was irreversibly derailed. The mu- sic ever since, no matter how talented and skilled the makers, has conscious- ly or unconsciously taken on different qualities. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just part of a different whole than all that came before. I don’t mean to sound dark; I’m having a great time. There is more to study now than there has ever been. This is a time of reflection unequaled in history. And you can still play your ass off in the mean time, if you know what you’re doing. There are also a few younger artists; what do you look for in your younger players? The utmost dedication in embracing the lineage of the world’s musical heri- tage, particularly, of course, as it relates to American jazz. You also do videos and have a nice up-to-date web site. How important is this to the overall business plan? The videos seem to be of great interest to the fans of this music and are therefore important to the business. The free samples on the website will hopefully help them sell music and to enable fu- ture endeavors. They will be for sale in 2007. How did you find your way to jazz? Only by the grace of God I suppose. It’s a compli- cated and lonely world, but through the influence of great individuals here and in Russia, along with the blessing of recorded music, it has gradually become both the heart of my creative life as well as my social life. Was there one teacher in particular who sent Lineage Records features a video about the label at lineagerecords.com you on your way into jazz? Actually, that’s kind of a sore point for me; that none of my teachers at institutions like Manhat- tan School and New School ever pointed me in this direction. When I arrived in New York, Art Taylor was still playing regularly at Fat Tuesday’s and no one ever gave me a heads up. I can’t believe I missed him. None of my teach- ers seem to share the view of the particular importance of that generation, or at least aren’t very open about it. It seems they tend to think of the music of their own generation active in the ’70s and ’80s as being equal if not more worthy of study than the earlier ones. I even got a sense of irritation from them when I would ask about the classics. ➤ Shame on them. jazzweek.com • October 9, 2006 JazzWeek 12 Artist/Label Q&A: Ilya Lushtak (continued)

Now my most direct teacher, that is, focusing on the real nuts and bolts is Bar- ry Harris. He really loves to explore the roots of harmony and linear improvi- sation as no one else I know. He is also one of my personal favorites as a player, which makes studying with him all the more inspiring. So what were some important early records for you? The early Count Basie band has compilations of all the sides with Lester Young and the original rhythm section. That stuff is phenomenal, both for having some of the best solos ever recorded as well as laying the ground for the mod- ern swing feel that would inspire bebop. I love the blues, I Another favorite with Pres is the bass-less trio with Nat Cole and . That one has it all as far as small group playing goes. A son named Oscar. Cool. What is it about traditional jazz that caught your imagination and gives you that creative spark? I believe it is the ease and clarity with which it allows the master to communi- cate with one’s bandmates and the audience. The fundamental elements of the language contain so much depth both viscerally and intellectually, that it’s just irresistible for me. I love the blues, I love bebop, and I love swing. I also find a limitless amount of joy and satisfation in the beauty and the enormity of the body of work created by the American composers of the 20th century. How did you hook up with Frank Wess? ing him better, I consider him to be an example of the best of what humanity has to offer. Was it hard talking these elder statesmen into coming to an artist-run label? It never even came up. I always just felt enthusiasm on their part at being able to work in an environment that was musically enjoyable. Does their enthusiasm surprise you, considering how many years they’ve been at it? As many years as they’ve been at it, they can tell jive from sincerity. Although the sessions haven’t been perfect, they can see what I’m doing, and I think it’s fitting that they would support this venture. What’s the Russian scene like? There are over a hundred guys at least, who are making a living playing “jazz.” As everywhere, especially in Europe, tastes vary. There is a won- derful government affiliated Jazz Philharmonic in St. Petersburg run by the veteran Russian David Goloshokin, that has two halls and employs musicians nightly. There is also an infi- nite amount of smaller venues where improvis- ing musicians play. Moscow has its own vibrant scene several times the size of St. Pete’s, at the commercial head of which is Igor Butman who is no less than a household name throughout Rus- sia. As far as I’m concerned, I consider it an im- mense blessing to have a handful of guys I can work with, including one true musical soul-mate, pianist Andrey Zimovets. This particular fellow, who is so far unknown here, but certainly has a big future with Lineage, has kicked my behind as much as the great masters have. This is one reason I know our lineage has a bright future: it crosses all geographic and cultural boundaries. This pianist also happens to be Barry Harris’ personal favorite. What can we look forward to for the label in the future? More releases from the current roster of greats and of course more undoubtedly beautiful, joyful and swinging music from some of the most inspired individu- als in music the scene today. JW

tring trios are probably one of the best, most satisfying sound- ing drummer-less combos around. Traditionally (as in the trios of SKellaway fan Oscar Peterson or Dick LaPalm prodigy Nat King Cole) these groups feature piano, guitar and bass, though pianist Mat- thew Shipp did a brilliant job of replacing guitar with on his landmark String Trio albums. As for Roger Kellaway, this is truly out of the Peterson school of swing (and dedicated to the pianist as well), but does have some of Cole’s jaunty sense of swing and even a little bit of Shipp’s modern avant-garde flavor.
