Spring Edition 2019 MORE THAN $1 MILLION IN FUNDING APPROVED FOR EQUINE RESEARCH IN 2019 The board of directors of Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has authorized expenditure of $1,338,858 to fund eight new projects at seven universities, nine continuing projects, and three career development awards to fund veterinary research to benefit all horses. This is the fifth straight year that more than $1 million has been approved. 366 Projects “We thank our generous donors who recognize the value of veterinary research for enhancing equine health and wellness,” said Jamie Haydon, president of the foundation. “From studying a racehorse’s stride to predict injury to testing an intrauterine 44 Universities antibiotic treatment, we are excited to see the results of these studies and how they may help horses of all breeds in the future.” Million 27.5 Oaklawn Park and WinStar Farm will each be donating $50,000 in 2019 to sponsor research projects pertaining to health in racehorses. They are participants in Grayson’s Since 1983 new corporate membership program, whereby organizations can contribute to 2019 projects listed on next page Grayson-funded projects. OXLEY TO RECEIVE THE DINNY PHIPPS AWARD We proudly announce that John C. “Jack” Oxley, a longtime Thoroughbred owner and supporter of Grayson, will be presented with the Dinny Phipps Award at a celebration of The Jockey Club’s 125th anniversary in New York City on Thursday, June 6. Earle Mack, an active participant in Thoroughbred racing and breeding for more than five decades, created the award in 2017 in memory of Phipps to honor an individual or individuals who have demonstrated dedication to equine health. -

www.kiltarlityandkirkhill.org.uk Kiltarlity and Wardlaw Churches FROM THE INTERIM MODERATOR Dear friends, This morning’s news told of the kidnapping of a bishop in Syria whom I met when I was there in Aleppo in 1995. Alas it’s a tiny though nevertheless horrible part of the current Syrian crisis – and a reminder of there being nothing impersonal about struggles and suffering in today’s world. Whether or not we know people caught up in the Boston bombing or the earthquakes in Iran and China, each and every human being are known and precious. ( How much we come to realise that when trouble comes close to us ! ) I preached recently on a passage in John’s gospel where people were asking hard questions. Quite right, for the next issue is what are the good answers ? People ask very reasonably, what is good religion; how important is faith ? How do we answer that ? Around Jesus, and I suspect in many people’s minds nowadays, understandably, feelings ran high that someone who is very fired up by their faith is dangerous. They are potentially unstable, a firebrand who could cause damage as much as bring help. So are we just going to be moderate and reasonable and perhaps not too much one way or the other ? The food for thought is how Jesus dealt with this. Jesus had a strong faith. There was teaching that he was utterly committed to, an outlook on life which he would not compromise. And his primary response to those who asked, is all this passion a good idea, was to say well, let’s think about what actions have followed. -

Gatsby: Myths and Realities of Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast by Raymond E. Spinzia and Judith A. Spinzia . The North Shore estates more than those of any other area of the Island captured the imagination of twentieth-century America. They occupied the area from Great Neck east to Centerport and from the Long Island Sound to just south of the present site of the Long Island Expressway. At the height of the estate era, Long Island had three Gold Coasts. An excellent social history of the South Shore estates, entitled Along the Great South Bay: From Oakdale to Babylon, has been written by Harry W. Havemeyer. The East End estates, which were built in the area known as the Hamptons, are chronicled by the authors in the soon-to-be-published Long Island’s Prominent Families in the Town of Southampton: Their Estates and Their Country Homes and Long Island’s Prominent Families in the Town of East Hampton: Their Estates and Their Country Homes. It is Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast and the fact, fiction, and outright confusion created by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that are considered here.1 Even the very existence of the South Shore and East End estates has remained relatively unknown. -

We urge the Census Bureau to maintain its constitutional responsibilities to enumerate every household that has not responded on its own, in order to achieve a fair and accurate count. Given the pandemic, there is every reason to believe the Census Bureau will need to collect data through October 31, a date the Census Bureau itself had earlier announced was needed to meet its obligations. We are leaders of nonpartisan philanthropic institutions from across the country, large and small, giving hundreds of millions of dollars each year to advance the common good and improve the quality of life in the United States. We have different funding approaches, are ideologically diverse, and do not always share the same priorities. But we have come together to support a fair and accurate 2020 Census, with a focus on historically undercounted communities, including people of color, low-income and immigrant families, and young children. We all oppose cutting short the 2020 Census in the midst of a global pandemic. Across our varied institutions, we share a belief that reliable and accurate data are a necessary foundation for a well-functioning government, robust civil society, and thriving business sector in the United States. -
