June 21 P11.Pdf The Guardian | Wednesday June 21 2006 11 David Pleat’s pick of the best If the sides were to meet later in the tournament and field their strongest teams, this would be my select XI Edwin Van der Sar Experienced, cool, authoritative and uses the ball like a libero. Johnny Heitinga One to watch. History of injuries but is now staking a place with steady defensive form from right-back. At 22 will steadily improve. Roberto Ayala Steadying influence: strong, good in the air for his size. Will lead his team. Gabriel Heinze Tremendous aerial ability. Plays accurately with his left foot into the channels. Prone to recklessness. Juan Pablo Sorín Has energy, aerial ability and a sweet left foot. Can be erratic in the tackle but a vastly improved player. Mark van Bommel Likes to break forward but I would make him sit, using his tackling and determination to break up attacks. Van der Sar Ayala Heinze Heitinga Sorín Mascherano Van Bommel Riquelme Messi Robben Van Nistelrooy Javier Mascherano The new Claude Makelele: quick into the challenge, good positional sense, plays early. Puts team before himself. Juan Román Riquelme Has grown in stature in a smaller pond at Villarreal. Lovely touch. Though lacking pace, shields well and brain and precision passing more than compensate. Needs protection from two holders. Lionel Messi Wonderful first touch. Takes ball on the move with vision and pace. Glides past defenders. A joy to watch. Ruud van Nistelrooy Elder statesman just edges it. Like Hernán Crespo a goal machine, but Tévez may eclipse both in time. Arjen Robben Not frightened to run the ball and carries the attack with speed. Spins beyond defenders who leave spaces. • RONALDO MOST HATED FOOTBALLER in the PREMIERSHIP Submitted By: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Tuesday, 20 January 2009
RONALDO MOST HATED FOOTBALLER IN THE PREMIERSHIP Submitted by: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Tuesday, 20 January 2009 A study of over 2500 football fans has found that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is the most hated football player in the Barclays Premiership, despite winning Fifa’s World Player of the Year award and having had a successful season to date. A recent survey asked 2,614 UK-based football fans the multiple answer question, “Which players do you dislike the most in the Barclays Premiership?” Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo topped the poll, taking 48% of the votes. Ronaldo has been the standout recipient of world awards this season, being the current holder of the Ballon d'Or and the reigning FIFPro World Player of the Year, PFA and FWA Player of the Year, but his success in the awards has done little for his public standing, with 69% of fans claiming that he is ‘full of himself’, according to the survey commissioned by sports TV site www.Wheresthematch.com. Senegalese Sunderland striker El-Hadji Diouf came second in the poll of most hated footballers, followed by Newcastle United midfielder and England one-cap Joey Barton, best known publicly for his stint in prison for assault. When asked, “What makes a bad player?”, fans were split. ‘Foul play’ was noted as the main reason with 31%, followed closely by ‘arrogance’, with 28%. ‘Diving’ came in at third, with 19%. ‘Off-field behaviour’ was seventh, with 7% of the votes. There was representation in the survey of every Premiership team.

Simply unforgettable. The 2006/07 season remains one of those for fans of West Ham United. A season that began with such promise: Alan Pardew signed two genuine world- class players ahead of the kick-off, but little did the Argentinian pair of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano know they joined a season- long relegation battle. Roll forward to the business end, and with nine matches left to play the Hammers looked doomed. Seven wins from those nine made it arguably the greatest escape in English top-flight history.
