The critics have a point — the roots of Valentine’s Day go back to St. Valentine, who was said to perform illicit Christian weddings for Roman soldiers, but the association between the Feast of St. Valentine and romantic love didn’t actually gain widespread popularity until it was heavily marketed by (surprise, surprise) the greeting card industry in England in the 1800s. Thinkstock As easy as it is to be cynical about Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 does offer couples a chance to take at least one day out of the year to focus on each other. Local sexologist and relationship expert Trina Read says she understands couples’ reluctance to embrace the red roses and heart- shaped boxes of candy, but she still urges them to mark Valentine’s Day Spice up V-Day in a meaningful way. “We’re all very focused on our daily routine,” Read says. “What Valentines’ does for a couple is remind them that they have to make each other a priority.
