One of the most well-known and beloved athletes on campus, Anyichie was born in Nigeria and went to high school in New Jersey before choosing Binghamton. He had a promising basketball career and aspirations to be a diplomat after graduation. The athletics department held a tribute to Anyichie before the Nov. 16 men’s basketball home opener.

BEARCAT TEAM TIDBITS • Head Coach Tommy Dempsey recruited and coached former NBA lottery pick Jason Thompson when he was head coach at Rider University. That same year (2008) Dempsey was named both the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Metro N.Y. Coach of the Year.

• Associate Head Coach Bryan Goodman has helped coach four NBA draft picks, including current Detroit Pistons star Blake Griffin, while the two were at Oklahoma in 2007-09.

• In 1999-00, Tommy Dempsey and Bryan Goodman both served as assistant coaches on the staff at Susquehanna University (Pa.).

• Head coach Tommy Dempsey coached against assistant coach Brian Johnson when Dempsey was coaching Rider University and Johnson was a freshman guard for Delaware in 2007. In that game, host Rider beat Delaware 76-71.

• Assistant Coach Levell Sanders starred at Seton Hall in the late 1990s, where he squared off against BIG EAST leg- ends Allen Iverson (Georgetown), Ray Allen (UConn), Rip Hamilton (UConn), Kerry Kittles (Villanova) and Lawrence Moten (Syracuse).

• Senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. is related to Eddie Jordan, a former Rutgers All-American and NBA player who has coached in the NBA for 17+ seasons (cousin twice removed). He currently is an assistant with the Charlotte Hornets.

• Sophomore guard Leo Gallagher is a local product and in his senior year at nearby Seton Catholic Central, he led both the basketball and teams to the state championship game. He was a three-sport all-star, having also excelled in soccer.

• Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms scored 2,091 career points in high school, most points in the history at The Shipley School, in suburban Philadelphia. He scored a school-record 55 points in a game vs. Perkiomen School on Jan. 26, 2018.

• Sophomore center Ogheneyole “Savior” Akuwovo won a New Jersey state championship and Tournament of Cham- pions title for legendary coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s as a sophomore. The school closed after his junior year and he finished his scholastic career at Ranney School.

• Freshman center Ador Athuai has 14 siblings — seven brothers and seven sisters. • Athuai is 6-foot-11 and has a wingspan of 7-feet-5-inches.

• Junior wing Jevon “JJ” Brown won the 2017 national prep championship at Southwest Christian Academy (Texas) • Freshman wing George Tinsley led his high school, Abington Heights, to its first Pennsylvania 5A state title as a junior in 2018. He scored 29 points in the title game.

• Tinsley also was a three-year starting quarterback at Abington Heights and was named one of the top 50 scholastic QBs in Pennsylvania.

• Freshman guard Dan Petcash has an older brother, Andrew, who is a sophomore on ’s team. Bing- hamton and Boston, former foes in the America East, will square off Dec. 7 at Binghamton’s Events Center.

• Freshman seven-foot center Yarden Willis is the youngest of five children. His father, John Willis (6-foot-9), played 14 years of pro ball in Israel and Spain.

• Graduate student Pierre Sarr played his first three collegiate seasons for King Rice at Monmouth. Rice is a Binghamton native who starred at Binghamton High School and later University of North Carolina.

• Freshman guard Brenton Mills led his Allen High School (Texas) team to a 35-3 record and the Texas 6A championship as a senior (16 ppg., 6 rpg., 3 apg.).

• Freshman guard Hakon Hjalmarsson is the team’s first recruit from Iceland and the first Icelandic athlete to come to Binghamton in any sport. • Binghamton has led the America East in home attendance in 10 of the last 15 years.

• Binghamton suffered a great tragedy in July when rising sophomore forward Calistus Anyichie drowned at a park in Upstate . Anyichie was a beloved member of the program and was slated to be a starting center on the 2019-20 team. The athletics department paid tribute to Anyichie at his funeral in New Jersey in the summer and with a tribute video before the team’s home opener on Nov. 16. • Binghamton is very young in 2019-20 with nine of 13 players being underclassmen (69% of roster). The team has a combined FIVE years of Division I playing experience, with three of those years belonging to one player (graduate transfer Pierre Sarr).
