MB 6-1 Glenville, N.Y./Burnt Hills HS 1 suathletics.com scouting the opponents Northeastern (2-4) - Sept. 12, 7 p.m. Big Orange Tournament In their second weekend of action, the Huskies faced two nationally-ranked teams, including No. 2 Nebraska and No. 14 Cal Poly at the Paso Robles Marriott Invitational hosted by Cal Poly. The Huskies opened their 2008 campaign at the University of South Florida Invitational. Northeastern earned its first two wins of 2008 at the USF Invite defeating both Eastern Kentucky and Grambling, 3-0. USF proved quite the challenge for the Huskies as they won the match, 3-1. The Huskies went 0-3 at the Paso Robles Invitational against Nebraska (3-0), Tulane (3-1) and Cal Poly (3-0). Junior libero Leah Neubeck and senior captain Lauren DeTurk both eclipsed the 1000th mark in kills and digs, respectively, so far this season. Siena (0-5) - Sept. 13, Noon Big Orange Tournament The Siena Saints started their 2008 season off at the Hofstra Invitational where they met Seton Hall and Hofstra. While their opponents won both matches, the Saints were able to take each match to four sets, going 3-1 against both teams. Siena spent its second weekend of the 2008 season at the Texas A&M Invitational facing BYU, American and host, Texas A&M. The Saints gave BYU a run for its money but couldn’t pull off the win and BYU won the match, 3-1. American and Texas A&M also won their respective match against the Saints, 3-0. Junior Burgundy McCurty, who leads the Saints with 65 kills and 10 total blocks, earned all-tournament honors both weekends and senior April London has contributed 150 assists to the Saints offensive effort. Ohio (3-3) - Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m. Big Orange Tournament The Ohio Bobcats did not waste any time this season before facing some of the toughest volleyball competition. The Bobcats opened their 2008 campaign at the Hawaiian Wahine Classic facing No. 6 UCLA (L, 3-0), No. 12 Hawaii (L, 3-0) and defending National Champion Penn State (L, 3-0). Ohio spent its second weekend at the Pitt Classic, posting its first three wins of 2008. The Bobcats defeated Binghamton, 3-0, and earned two 3-1 victories against Eastern Kentucky and Pitt. A season-high 20 kills by junior Ellen Herman and a team defensive effort producing 10 blocks earned the Bobcats their Pitt Classic Title. Army (5-1) - Sept.14, 11 a.m. Big Orange Tournament Army heads into the Big Orange Tournament with a 5-1 record. The Black Knights opened 2008 competition with two 3-0 wins in same-day matches against Manhattan and Wagner. Army followed with a 3-0 win at Marist three days later. The Black Knights then traveled to Philadelphia for the Temple Invite. The team posted two 3-0 wins again to start off the tournament before suffering a 3-2 setback against Bowling Green. In a match that lasted more than two hours, five players tallied double- digit kills. Offensively, Army is led by senior Briana Stremick (63 kills) and junior Maureen Bannon (157 assists). Junior Shara Hoffman (69 digs) and senior Jamie Clark (15 total blocks) lead the Black Knights on the defense. Akron (3-4) - Sept. 14, 3 p.m. After cancelling their trip to the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational due to weather, the Akron Zips will face the Orange in Manley Field House Sunday afternoon following the Big Orange Tournament. The Zips are 3-4 this season after going 1-2 at the NAU Invitational and 2-2 at the Air Force Academy-Smoothie King Tournament. Akron opened its season with a 3-2 loss to Northern Arizona, but was able to rebound in its final game of the tournament with a 3-0 defeat of Rutgers. Akron spent the next week at the Air Force Academy where it posted two 3-1 wins against Air Force and North Carolina State.
