IntroductIon Selenidad and Latinidad in the 1990s The vocabulary of grievance that constitutes so much of American political dis- course has ironically deflected attention away from a serious look at the more immaterial, unquantifiable repository of public and private grief that has gone into the making of the so-called minority subject. —Anne Anlin Cheng, The Melancholy of Race To get to the Selena Museum, you must leave the tourist district along Corpus Christi’s bay front, traveling west on Ih-35, or you can take the side streets, driving through town on Leopard Street, past the pawnshops, past the sign for Braslau’s furniture that, when lit, reads “R S AU’S,” past A & A Bail Bonds and Vick’s Hamburger stand, past the Buccaneer Sta- dium, where on Friday nights crowds gather for local high school football games, past the racetrack, past the Ranch Motel and La Siesta Motel and Sunset Motel and Cactus Motel, past a billboard advertising Bud Light in Spanish, past the Diamond Eyes and Party Place Cabaret gentlemen’s clubs, and just past the Greyhound RV Park on the right side of the street. Handout 2 - Introducing Selena Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971. She began performing at a young age in her family’s restaurant with her older brother and sister. Despite being unable to speak the language fluently, Selena sung in Spanish by learning the songs phonetically. The family group soon became called Selena y Los Dinos, and after a move to Corpus Christi, they started regularly performing at weddings, school events, quinceaneras, and fairs. Soon, they were signed to a local record company and between 1986 and 1988, they released five albums. As the lead singer, Selena became a main figure in Tejano music, which was traditionally a male dominated genre. After winning Female Entertainer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards, she began releasing music simply as Selena. Her self-titled album was released in 1989, and peak- ed on the Billboard Mexican Regional charts at #7. Her subsequent albums were equally suc- cessful: the second album Ven Conmigo was the first Tejano album by a woman to go gold with 500,000 sales, her third album Entre a Mi Mundo produced her signature song “Como La Flor” and her fourth album Amor Prohibido charted on Billboard 200 charts. In 1993, she released Live! which earned a Grammy for Best Mexican/American Album. Outside of music, Selena served as a spokesperson for Coca Cola from 1987 and into the 90s, and ventured into fashion by establishing her clothing line and fashion boutique, Selena Etc. which featured locations in Texas, and engaged in philanthropy work. -

CHAPTER FIFTEEN Guadalupe San Miguel, Jr. Musica Tejana: More Than Conjuntos and Orquestas INTRODUCTION Manuel Pena has argued that musica tejana is comprised of two major musical ensembles and their styles, the conjunto and the orquesta.1 These are not the only ones in the community. Others have formed and become dominant at different historical periods in the 20th century. The only ensemble that has survived during this century, however, has been the conjunto. CONJUNTO: TRADITIONAL AND PROGRESSIVE The conjunto originated on both sides of the border and began as a two-person outfit in the 1920s, one played the accordion and the other played a string instrument. Its repertoire, initially, was quite broad and included a host of traditional dances and songs popular throughout 215 Mexico. The conjunto expanded to four persons and four instruments in the post-WWII period. -

Se considera al transnacionalismo como un enfoque económico-migratorio que permite acercarnos a la música norteña desde las ciencias sociales. La música norteña es una práctica musical que goza de popularidad en naciones latinoamericanas como Chile, Colombia, Brasil y Bolivia. Es un suceso trasnacional y cosmopolita. Fundamentados en autores como Turino, Landolt y Blanco, se explica a la música norteña desde el transnacionalismo y la teoría de la dependencia de Faletto y Cardoso. El texto se construyó a partir de la investigación de archivo y trabajo de campo realizado en las ciudades de Monte- rrey, Guanajuato, Irapuato, Salamanca y Culiacán.
