Film, Television and Video Productions Featuring Brass Bands
Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light. -

The answer is YES at The Queen's School. The examination results achieved by Upper Sixth and Upper Fifth in 1991 placed the school fifth in the country and third out of girls' schools, in the Financial Times ranking. League Tables cer• tainly have their weaknesses but nevertheless they are one mea• sure of success. This high academic achievement is maintained along with the wide variety of activities detailed in the magazine. The fact that high standards exist in so many areas in school reflects the commitment of a very dedicated team of staff who give time and inspiration to the girls. At the head of this team I would put Miss Walters and it there• fore came as no surprise when she was appointed to the Headship of Durham High School. -

Mark Hinton Stewart
MARK HINTON STEWART COMPOSER Mark Hinton Stewart is a British film composer whose music moves seamlessly from a refined classicism to a more contemporary feel. He has recently re-ignited his passion for writing classical works; full details are available on request. Mark composed the title music for Waterloo Road with Shed Productions for the BBC, and created a compelling score for Magnolia for Red Productions. He scored the US film feature The Man From Earth with Richard Schenkman, as well as a special two-parter of the BBC’s Casualty. He scored Holby Blue Series II, the latest creation from Tony Jordan for BBC1 made by Red Planet / Kudos, having also scored series 1, and then went onto score The Chase series 2, for Rollem Productions. He also scored the 6-part comedy series for the BBC, Parents Of The Band, created by Jimmy Nail and Tarquin Gotch. Mark most recently scored Crash, for Red Planet Pictures. Originally a classically trained pianist and organist, he has worked with some of the biggest names in the film/pop scene, from Sir George Martin to Jools Holland and Adam F. Mark assisted on the Music Supervision of both, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Real Howard Spitz, and has scored a number of films including Tube Tales (the Sky Pictures movie with Ewan McGregor, Denise van Outen, Rachel Weisz, Jason Flemyng and Bob Hoskins), The Truth Game for Screen Production Associates, the feature Dog Eat Dog for Film Four/Tiger Aspect Pictures and Baby Juice Express for The Spice Factory starring Nick Moran. -
