Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were killed at the end of June in 1914. This plunged the world into war and World War I began.

World War I began on July 28, 1914. This war was also called the Great War. It started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Then, more countries declared war on each other. America chose to stay neutral until April 1917. Neutral means they did not have a side in the war.

The fighting ended and Germany surrendered on November 11, 1918. The Allied Powers won the war. In June 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. World War I officially came to a close. There were 65 million men who fought during the war.

There were two sides during World War I: The Allied Powers and the Central Powers.

Allied Powers: France, Britain, Russia, Serbia, Japan, Italy, Greece, , Japan, Romania, Portugal, Belgium (and many more smaller countries)

Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Canadian Scottish Soldiers, September 1918 Bulgaria

The United States was the only country that did not officially use dogs in their military. Germany and France used thousands of dogs in battle. Their dogs worked as scouts, messengers, and equipment carriers. One of the famous dogs of World War I was Sergeant Stubby. Stubby was involved in 17 battles during the war.
