This plunged the world into war and World War I began. World War I began on July 28, 1914. This war was also called the Great War. It started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Then, more countries declared war on each other. America chose to stay neutral until April 1917. Neutral means they did not have a side in the war. The fighting ended and Germany surrendered on November 11, 1918.
