A New Look at Max Weber and His Anglo-German Family Connections1 Lutz Kaelber2 Guenther Roth’s study places Max Weber in an intricate network of ties among members of his lineage. This paper presents core findings of Roth’s analysis of Weber’s family relations, discusses the validity of Roth’s core theses and some of the implications of his analysis for Weber as a person and scholar, and addresses how Roth’s book may influence future approaches to Weber’s sociology. KEY WORDS: Max Weber; history of sociology; classical sociology; German history; Guenther Roth. “How well do we know Max Weber?”—When the late Friedrich H. Tenbruck (1975) raised this question almost thirty years ago, he had Weber’s scholarship in mind. The analysis of Weber’s oeuvre and the debate over it, fueled by a steady trickle of contributions of the Max Weber Gesamtaus- gabe, has not abated since. Thanks to the Gesamtausgabe’s superbly edited volumes, we now know more about Weber the scholar than ever before, even though the edition’s combination of exorbitant pricing and limitation to German-language editions has slowed its international reception. Tenbruck’s question might be applied to Weber’s biography as well. Abstract This thesis situates the emergence of German imperialist theory and praxis during the nineteenth century within the context of the ascendancy of German liberalism. It also contends that imperialism was an integral part of a liberal sense of German national identity. It is divided into an introduction, four parts and a set of conclusions. The introduction is a methodological and theoretical orientation. It offers an historiographical overview and places the thesis within the broader historiographical context. It also discusses the utility of post-colonial theory and various theories of nationalism and nation-building. Part One examines the emergence of expansionism within liberal circles prior to and during the period of 1848/ 49. It examines the consolidation of expansionist theory and political practice, particularly as exemplified in the Frankfurt National Assembly and the works of Friedrich List. Part Two examines the persistence of imperialist theorising and praxis in the post-revolutionary era. It scrutinises the role of liberal associations, civil society, the press and the private sector in maintaining expansionist energies up until the 1884 decision to establish state-protected colonies. Part Three focuses on the cultural transmission of imperialist values through the sciences, media and fiction. -
Lotze and the Early Cambridge Analytic Philosophy
LOTZE AND THE EARLY CAMBRIDGE ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY ―This summer I‘ve read about a half of Lotze‘s Metaphysik. He is the most delectable, certainly, of all German writers—a pure genius.‖ William James, September 8, 1879.1 Summary Many historians of analytic philosophy consider the early philosophy of Moore, Russell and Wittgenstein as much more neo-Hegelian as once believed. At the same time, the authors who closely investigate Green, Bradley and Bosanquet find out that these have little in common with Hegel. The thesis advanced in this chapter is that what the British (ill-named) neo-Hegelians brought to the early analytic philosophers were, above all, some ideas of Lotze, not of Hegel. This is true regarding: (i) Lotze’s logical approach to practically all philosoph- ical problems; (ii) his treating of the concepts relation, structure (constructions) and order; (iii) the discussion of the concepts of states of affairs, multiple theory of judgment, general logical form; (iv) some common themes like panpsychism and contemplating the world sub specie aeternitatis. 1. LOTZE, NOT HEGEL, LIES AT THE BOTTOM OF CAMBRIDGE ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY Conventional wisdom has it that the early philosophy of Moore and Russell was under the strong sway of the British ―neo-Hegelians‖. In the same time, however, those historians who investigate the British ―neo-Hegelians‖ of 1880–1920 in detail, turn attention to the fact that the latter are not necessarily connected with Hegel: William Sweet made this point in regard to 1 Perry (1935), ii, p. 16. Bosanquet,2 Geoffrey Thomas in regard to Green,3 and Peter Nicholson in regard to Bradley.4 Finally, Nicholas Griffin has shown that Russell from 1895–8, then an alleged neo-Hegelian, ―was very strongly influenced by Kant and hardly at all by Hegel‖.5 These facts are hardly surprising, if we keep in mind that the representatives of the school of T. -

Chapter One Historiography and Sources
CHAPTER ONE HISTORIOGRAPHY AND SOURCES Publications devoted to the writing of library history in the United States date from the 1950s but did not begin to appear with regularity until the latter stages of the 1970s. Articles on the "value of library history" have been produced by Jesse H. Shera (1952, 1.12), Haynes McMullen (1952, 1.11), Raymond Irwin (1958, 1.17), Louis Shores (1961, 1.26), and John C. Colson (1969, 1.44) and collectively constitute a genre in their own right. More traditional contributions reviewing and evaluating the literature stem from classic essays by Felix Reichmann ("Historical Research and Library Science," 1964, 1.29) and Sidney L. Jackson ("Materials for Teaching Library History in the U.S.A.," 1972, 1.76). These were followed by two fine articles on public library historiography by Sidney Ditzion and Francis Miksa, respectively (1973, 1.82; 1982, 1.139); overviews of the literature encompassing academic, public, and private libraries as well as key individuals and landmark publications by Shera (1973, 1.87) and Colson (1976, 1.100); general analyses of recent scholarship by David Kaser (1978, 1.121) and Lee Shiflett (1984, 1.145); and a statistical and analytical study of the historical monograph from 1975 to 1985 by Laurel A. Grotzinger (1986, 1.155). Thematic and methodological issues came under the scrutiny of Michael H. Harris (1975, 1.97; 1976, 1.105; 1986, 1.157), Elaine Fain (1979, 1.128), Wayne A. Wiegand (1983, 1.143), and Robert V. Williams (1984, 1.147). Interpretive concerns, in particular, dominated the writings of Harris, an avowed revisionist, and were featured with rejoinders in two issues of the Journal of Library History (vol. -

Making Sense of German History PETER PULZER All Souls College, Oxford IT IS AN HONOUR AND A PRIVILEGE to have been asked to give this lecture in commemoration of an original and influential thinker and a man of great integrity. I first came across Elie Kedourie’s writings in the early 1960s and felt instinctively drawn to the tone of rational scepticism in which he expressed himself—a tone more suited to an eighteenth-century philosophe than to a child of the era of tyrannies. I did not, however, get to know him personally until he came to Oxford in the late 1980s as a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College. He was not, as those who knew him better than I will confirm, a highly extrovert person, but he was courteous and engaging, happy to listen and to respond in an invariably learned and reasoned way. Halle Pietism was a reform movement within the Lutheran church in 17th and 18th century Germany that believed the establishment church had become too concerned with correct theology, thus they aimed at a revival of intense Biblicism, personal spirituality, and social reform. The Pietists, led by August Hermann Francke (1662-1727) , and King Friedrich Wilhelm I (rl7l3-l740) were partners in an attempt to create a Godly realm in economically strapped and politically divided Brandenburg-Prussia. In large measure the partnership produced Pietist control of Brandenburg- Prussia'a pulpits and schoolrooms, despite the opposition of another informal alliance, this between the landed nobility and the establishment Lutheran church, who hoped to maintain their own authority in the religious and political spheres. -

GUIDELINES FOR HISTORICAL RESEARCH AND WRITING HOW TO APPROACH RESEARCH AND WRITING A. Fourteen Steps to a good historical research paper. In A Short Guide to Writing About History Richard Marius outlines fourteen steps that every student should follow in writing a historical research paper. 1. Identify your audience. All writing assignments are intended to be read, and the intended audience should always determine what is written. History is no different. An entry on Napoleon in World Book Encyclopedia is written for a general audience, while an article on Napoleon's Waterloo Campaign in the Journal of Military History is written for a scholarly audience. Unless otherwise instructed by your professor, you should always approach research papers in history courses as though you were writing an article for readers who have an interest in a particular subject but who may not be specialists in the field. Define important terms and give enough information to provide a context for your paper, but do not get bogged down in general information. 2. Have a sharply focused and limited topic. You must limit your topic in order to study the sources carefully, to think about them thoroughly, and to write about them meaningfully. If you try to do too much, you will not do anything. 3. Present an argument. A common misconception about historical research papers is that they should simply compile the facts. Nothing is further from the truth. The purpose of writing a historical research paper is to interpret the past. Do not simply provide what one would find in an encyclopedia entry, whose purpose is, in the words of Sergeant Joe Friday, "to state the facts, and nothing but the facts." Find a problem and try to solve it. -
Popper on Historicism and Marxism
Popper on Historicism and Marxism WHILE in New Zealand during the Second World War, Karl Popper developed a theory concerning the methods of history and of the social sciences that had its origins in the new account of scientific method that he had given in his book Logik der Forschung.1 An investigation into the methods of history and social science also seemed to Popper to be an extremely urgent undertaking given his experience of the marxism and fascism that came to dominate the intellectual and political climate of Austria during the inter-war period, and nearly all of Europe by the time he had arrived in New Zealand. Most of his work in this area subsequently appeared in the books The Poverty of Historicism2 and The Open Society and its Enemies (in two volumes).3 These Popper regarded as his 'war effort' since they were his 'defence of freedom against totalitarian and authoritarian ideas and a warning about historicist superstitions'.4 History and the social sciences, Popper argued, were beset by certain deep methodological misconceptions that he labelled 'historicist' (a term Popper has largely helped introduce into English). It is not clear precisely what doctrine the term refers to, though Popper is sure that historicism has had a 'persistent and pernicious influence upon the philosophy of society and of politics',5 and consequently upon society and politics itself. However, it is clear that Popper thinks that Marx is an historicist along with Plato, Hegel, Comte, J.S. Mill and sociologists such as Karl Mannheim. The purpose of this article is, first, to single out some important aspects of historicism and, second, to discover whether or not these aspects of historicism can be found in Marx.
