® YEAR-END EDITION 2 01 6 REPUBLIC #1 FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR RCA Runner Up; Columbia Moves 5-3; Def Jam, 9-4; Interscope 5th REPUBLIC continues its reign as the #1 overall label in Mediabase chart share for a third straight year. The 2016 chart year is based on the time period from November 15, 2015 through November 12, 2016. Of the 10 Mediabase formats that comprise overall rankings, Republic landed the #1 spot at four formats: Top 40, Rhythmic, Hot AC and AC. Republic had a total chart share of 17.9%, while scoring over a 20% share at Top 40 (23.7%), Rhythmic (20.2%), and AC (20.2%). OTHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR REPUBLIC THIS YEAR: - The label’s total spins for the year across all formats was 7,539,293 – the second highest total ever – only behind the 9.3 million they had in their record setting 2015. - Over half of the Republic spins came at the Top 40 format, where they scored 3,834,134, over 1.6 million spins ahead of the next closest competitor. - Republic had 1,119,628 spins at Rhythmic and 1,117,379 at Hot AC, with both of those joining the million spin club. - For the second consecutive year, Republic nabbed the top slot honors at Top 40, Rhythmic and AC. - Republic was #3 Urban, #5 at Active Rock, #6 at Urban AC , #7 at Alternative, and #8 at Triple A. - Four of the top 10 artists at Top 40 belonged to Republic with Drake (#4), The Weeknd (#7), Shawn Mendes (#8), and Ariana Grande (#9). - Drake was the #1 artist at both the Rhythmic and Urban formats, and The Weeknd was #4 at Rhythmic. - Republic held the top two slots at Hot AC, with Shawn Mendes “Stitches” at #1 and James Bay “Let It Go” at #2. - In addition, Mendes was the #4 Most Played Artist at Hot AC, Bay was 8th, and Taylor Swift landed in the 10th spot. - Swift scored the #2 Most Played Artist slot at AC, where many of her songs that were hits in 2015 at other formats remained current and heavy recurrent throughout 2016. 2 RCA HELD THE #2 SPOT FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH A 12.5% MARKET SHARE. The label was the top label at Urban AC, with a 17.91% share. - RCA also landed the #2 slots at Hot AC, AC, and Alternative, #3 at Rhythmic, as well as #4 at Urban and Top 40. - The label saw increased shares across multiple formats: - OVERALL 12.4 - 12.5% TOP 40 11.9 - 12.0% URBAN 8.8 - 11.0% HOT AC 12.5 - 14.7% AC 16.1 - 20.0% - RCA scored four songs in the top 15 at Top 40: Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” at #7, Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” at #11, G-Eazy f/Bebe Rexha’s “Me, Myself & I” at #13, and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” at #14. - Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t” nabbed the song of the year at Urban. Tiller’s “Exchange” finished #6 for the year, and the rookie was the #2 Most Played Artist at Urban. - RCA had three of the top eight songs at Hot AC with Elle King’s “Ex’s And Oh’s” at #5, Justin Timberlake at #6, and Pink’s “Just Like Fire” at #8 (the latter two were big movie songs). G-Eazy f/Bebe Rexha was the third most played song at Rhythmic. - COLUMBIA MADE A MAJOR LEAP FROM 5th TO 3rd THIS YEAR, AND WAS UP 22% IN SHARE (8.9-10.9). - Columbia landed the #2 spot at Top 40 with 13.3%, up from 5th last year, with a 34% increase in share. - The label also nabbed the #2 slot at Triple A, and scored a top 3 finish at Hot AC and AC. - Columbia’s AC share was up 175% from last year (6.8-18.7), while Hot AC moved from 12.4-14.4 (+16%). - The Chainsmokers were a huge breakout artist for Columbia with their two major #1’s -- “Closer” featuring Halsey, and “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya. The duo’s success helped land them the #2 Most Played Artist at Top 40, and #5 at Rhythmic. - 2016 was certainly the year of Adele. She nabbed the #1 Most Played Artist at both Hot AC and AC, #2 at Triple A, and placed a solid #6 at Top 40. THE LARGEST RAW SPIN AND PERCENTAGE GAIN YEAR TO YEAR FOR ANY LABEL IN 2016 BELONGED TO DEF JAM. THE LABEL SAW GIANT INCREASES ACROSS A NUMBER OF FORMATS, AS THEY MOVED FROM 9th PLACE OVERALL LAST YEAR TO 4th IN 2016. Here’s how Def Jam performed at key formats year to year: OVERALL #9 to #4 4.9% to 10.3% +102% TOP 40 #8 to #3 4.7% to 12.6% +168% RHYTHMIC #3 to #2 10.9% to 16.5% +51% URBAN #3 to #1 11.8% to 14.8% +25% HOT AC #11 to #6 1.2% to 7.1% +492% AC #11 to #6 0.2% to 6.7% +3,250% 3 A couple of key artists helped contribute to the staggering increased numbers for Def Jam from 2015 to 2016, including the huge success of Justin Bieber this year. - Bieber scored the year’s #1 artist position at Top 40, #2 at Hot AC, #3 at Rhythmic, and #5 at AC. - Bieber’s “Love Yourself” was the most played song of the year across all formats on the Mediabase “Big Picture” chart, while it ranked #2 at Top 40, #4 at Hot AC and #6 at AC.. Bieber also landed the #3 slot at Top 40 with “Sorry.” “ - Newcomer Alessia Cara, ranked as the 10th Most Played Artist at Top 40. Cara had three songs that charted this year including “Here,” “Wild Things” and is still currently moving up the Top 40 and Hot AC charts with “Scars To Your Beautiful.” - Ironically, “Here” wound up the year as the 17th most played song at both the Top 40 and Rhythmic formats, and received notable airplay at Urban, Urban AC, Hot AC, and AC. - Def Jam also had continued success with the always reliable Rihanna, who was the year’s #2 Most Played Artist at Rhythmic, and #3 at Urban. - Rihanna scored big in 2016 with “Work” and “Needed Me.” Those two records ranked as the 2nd and 4th most played songs in the Urban format, where Def Jam was the #1 label for 2016. The label also landed the 3rd most played song with Jeremih “Oui.” Those same three songs ranked in the top 6 at Rhythmic as well, albeit in a different order. - ROUNDING OUT THE TOP 5 2016 OVERALL LABELS IS INTERSCOPE, WITH A 8.2% CHART SHARE - This year, Interscope garnered top 5 label honors at Top 40, Urban, Hot AC, Alternative, and Triple A. - Interscope’s strong year was fueled by hits from artists including Selena Gomez, X Ambassadors, Tory Lanez, Ellie Goulding, and DJ Snake. - The label also ended 2016 on a strong note, as X Ambassadors and DJ Snake were being joined with big gains by new Maroon 5 and the red- hot Rae Sremmurd, as they head into the new 2017 chart year. EPIC RANKED 6th WITH A 7.2% MARKET SHARE – A SHARP GAIN OF 38% FROM THE 5.2% THEY HELD LAST YEAR. THE LABEL ALSO SHOWED STRONG GAINS AT SEVERAL BIG AIRPLAY FORMATS: TOP 40 4.8% - 7.1% +48% RHYTHMIC 4.5% - 11.4% +153% URBAN 9.5% - 13.8% +45% Epic garnered major hits from their roster of artists including Fifth Harmony, Future, Kent Jones, Meghan Trainor, Zara Larsson, DJ Khaled, Future, and Yo Gotti. 4 ATLANTIC PLACED 7th OVERALL AND SCORED A #1 FINISH IN THE ALTERNATIVE FORMAT AS WELL AS SOME OTHER STRONG ACCOMPLISHMENTS. - Atlantic held two of the Top 10 records at both Active Rock and Alternative. - At Active Rock they scored two from Shinedown –“State Of My Head” which took top #1 honors, and “Asking For It” which placed at #10. On the Alternative chart, they slotted with Coldplay’s “Adventures Of A Lifetime” (#6) and Kaleo’s “Way Down We Go” (#7). - Additional leading acts for Atlantic in 2016 included Charlie Puth, Flo Rida, Kevin Gates, Gnash f/Olivia O’Brien, and Fitz & The Tantrums. - Atlantic ended the 2016 chart year with strong upward movement from multi-format releases from Bruno Mars and Gnash. ROADRUNNER LANDED IN 8th PLACE THIS YEAR WITH A 5.5% MARKET SHARE, UP 31% FROM THEIR 4.2% SHOWING IN 2015. - Twenty One Pilots had three huge multi-format hits with “Stressed Out,” “Ride” and “Heathens.” - “Stressed Out” was the #1 song of the year at Top 40, #2 at Alternative, and #3 at Hot AC. - Twenty One Pilots garnered Most Play Artist honors at multiple formats. They placed at #1 Alternative, and at #3 at both Top 40 and Hot AC. Also part of Roadrunner’s 2016 success were strong showings from Kiara, O.T. Genasis, and Robin Schulz. - CHARTING AT #9 OVERALL FOR 2016 WAS WARNER BROS., WITH A 3.8% SHARE. - Warner Bros. captured the #1 spot at Active Rock this year with 13.3% chart share. They also scored the #1 Active Rock Most Played Artist with Disturbed. - The label had three of the top 6 songs at Active Rock for 2016 – two from Disturbed “The Sound Of Silence” (#2) and “The Light” (#6), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dark Necessities” landed at #5.
