Board of Education, community organizations in Chicago, Newark, and New Orleans, all members of the national Journey for Justice Alliance, file three complaints under Title IV and Title VI of the Civil Rights of 1964 with the Education Opportunities Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division (“DOJ”) and the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”). As we commemorate the landmark civil rights victory that struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine and the system of codified racism in our public schools, we respectfully request that you open an investigation of the racially discriminatory school closings that are the subject of these complaints. Journey for Justice is a coalition of grassroots organizations in twenty-one cities across the country. The coalition has come together because, across our communities, education “reformers” and privatizers are targeting neighborhood schools filled with children of color, and leaving behind devastation. By stealth, seizure, and sabotage, these corporate profiteers are closing and privatizing our schools, keeping public education for children of color, not only separate, not only unequal, but increasingly not public at all. -

French Stewardship of Jazz: the Case of France Musique and France Culture
ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously. The 2014-15 Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Harlean Ahuja, Midwestern University, College of Dental Medicine Harlean proposes to initiate "Right from the Start," an interdisciplinary health curriculum for low income elementary school students living in the western suburbs. She will provide interactive workshops to educate children on the importance of making and implementing healthy lifestyle choices and encourage them to actively begin developing healthy lifelong habits. Kelli Bosak, University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration Kelli plans to work with women in the process of community re-entry or in residential programs affiliated with the Cook County Sheriff Women’s Justice Program. She will lead a weekly yoga and mindfulness group to aid them in their stress reduction, health education, and empowerment. Eddie D. Burks, Loyola University Chicago, Community Counseling Eddie will initiate psycho-education interventions and a support group to assist LGBTQ youth, primarily those who are Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) wards of the state. His program will provide literacy on legal rights pertaining to DCFS LGBT wards of the state, skills to help with positive development of self-esteem and acceptance of sexual orientation, and coping skills to deal with mental health related issues in relation to their sexual orientation. Autumn Burnes, Rush University, Rush Medical College Autumn proposes to teach adult English as a Second Language through the Lincoln United Methodist Church in Pilsen. The classes will emphasize health literacy on topics such as diabetes and hypertension and help connect participants to health resources in the community. Rebecca Charles, Chicago-Kent College of Law and University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health Rebecca will partner with Heartland Health Center to educate immigrant populations on culturally appropriate nutrition interventions for better diabetes control. -

“A Slow Walk to Greatness: The Harold Washington Story” This is “A Slow Walk to Greatness: The Harold Washington Story.” Harold Washington was Chicago’s first black mayor. His 1983 mayoral election held global significance. Chicago is a major American city that has always been known for segregation and for political corruption. Washington’s election sent the message that individuals can positively impact politics and that if Chicago could achieve greater equality, than similar cities were capable of the same. Harold Washington was a native Chicagoan and son of a politician. He grew up on Chicago’s South Side, attended DuSable High School and enlisted in the Army during World War II. Returning home, he earned his undergraduate degree from Roosevelt College, and in 1952 earned a law degree from Northwestern University. He served 15 years in the Illinois State Legislature and one and a half terms in the United States House of Representatives before becoming a candidate in Chicago’s 1983 mayoral race. Practiced law and served as Chicago attorney 1954 – 1958 Elected successively to: Illinois House of Representatives 1965 – 1976 Illinois State Senate 1976 – 1980 U.S. House of Representatives 1980 – 1983 Initially, Washington did not want to run for Chicago mayor. A candidate needs 25,000 signatures of registered voters to be on the ballot. Washington asked his supporters to gain 50,000 signatures before he would consider it. They gathered over 100,000 signatures! In 1983, Washington successfully campaigned for mayor of Chicago on a platform of reform and an end to city patronage. Harold Washington’s election as Chicago’s first black mayor gained national attention. -

BLACK CENTENARY CELEBRATION 7 GUILLAUME LACROIX Consul General of France in Chicago Guillaume Lacroix became Consul General of France in Chicago on August 29th, 2017. He holds diplomas from Institut d’études politiques de Paris and Université Panthéon- Assas. He speaks Swahili, a language he studied at Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales in Paris and in Zanzibar, Tanzania. He started his diplomatic career in 1997. He was assigned to the Department of African and Indian Ocean Affairs in Paris, then to the French Embassy in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and to the French Embassy in Washington. He was also posted in two other diplomatic institutions: at the U.S. State Department as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellow program and at the European External Action Service in Brussels. From 2013 until 2017, he served in the cabinets of French Foreign Affairs Ministers Laurent Fabius and Jean-Marc Ayrault as Counsellor for African Affairs. Guillaume Lacroix was born in 1971 in Auxerre (Burgundy). He is married and has two children. -
From His Beginnings As One of Chicago's Most Thrilling
From his beginnings as one of Chicago’s most thrilling young trumpeters, to his current status as an internationally renowned musician, composer and bandleader, Marquis Hill has worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that divide musical genres. Contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul—to Hill, they’re all essential elements of the profound African-American creative heritage he’s a part of. “It all comes from the same tree,” he says. “They simply blossomed from different branches.” That mission to bring styles together, complemented by Hill’s absolute mastery of his instrument, is a through line connecting his many achievements. It can be heard on his latest album, Modern Flows Vol. II, with its seamless blend of jazz interplay, hip-hop-infused rhythms and socially conscious spoken-word. It’s integral to The Way We Play, his Concord Jazz debut from 2016, where Hill and his musicians reinvent jazz standards using their generation’s wide- ranging influences. It marks the four records Hill self-released before November of 2014, when he won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition and became a presence on the global scene virtually overnight. And it defines the revelatory live dates by Hill’s longtime working group, the Blacktet, which the Chicago Tribune called “a remarkably polished, immensely attractive ensemble.” For Hill, playing and listening without limits has long been an instinct. “It comes naturally; that’s the way I hear the music,” he says. “I came up in a household where my mom played Motown, R&B, Isley Brothers, Barry White, Marvin Gaye.
