NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s. -

Ryston Park Newsletter May 2019 By Pam Taylor Broad Bordered Bee Hawk Moth ( First sighting for me) We have been blessed with some great weather for playing golf. The course has enjoyed the rain of late, and it is looking really good. The greens are running good and true and most of the fairways have a good bit of grass on them, so shots into the greens are easy (I still cant get them right though!). We now seem to have competitions every week, so there’s always plenty to play for. One of the highlights of the season is the upcoming Club Championship, which will be held on the 23rd of June. For those of you who have not played it, it is a 36 hole medal in one day with cups for both scratch and handicap scores. More importantly, there will be sandwiches and chips on offer in the clubhouse after 18 holes. I intend to be playing this, which did not seem possible in the winter when I was exhausted from having chemotherapy. I would love to see a big entry list - I hope lots of you can take part! The most important thing for all of us is to enjoy the golf we play, and play in a style that respects others. Enjoy! You could say our roots are in the Fens; each born and raised no more than an hour's drive from here. In our careers we moved about the country but spent the majority of our working life at Lowestoft before retiring to northern France in 1994. Joining U3A, amongst other societies and groups, was part of a strategy for integrating, but editing the newsletter could have been over-ambitious. In fact we have found support with Penny Dossetor as coordinator, and more recently have been joined by Edward and Judith Harrison. In a way this edition mirrors our experience in discovering U3A. I found that the nature and status of U3A was not well known in the town. The brief statement from the official web-site is (may I say?) rather daunting: U3As are self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co- operatives for older people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun. Our experience is that the King's Lynn U3A is an organisation which is varied and welcoming, catering for an eclectic range of interests and activities. -

Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries. -

Circular Walk Setchey and Shouldham Warren via Pentney Abbey www.norfolk.gov.uk/trails Revision date: September 2013 Along the way Walk summary A diverse 10.5 mile walk through the countryside of From Setchey Bridge (just south of Setchey village) the walk heads east, following the north the Fens and Brecks, visiting Setchey, Pentney bank of the River Nar through open fenland for about 4 miles before arriving at Abbey Farm. Abbey, Shouldham Warren and Wormegay along the way Pentney Abbey, an Augustinian priory, was founded here around 1130 by Robert de Vaux. The priory, which went into decline in the 15th century, was eventually dissolved by King Henry VIII during the Reformation in 1537. The The route begins at Setchey Bridge at TF636134 on the ruins of the impressive flint and Barnack stone gatehouse, which dates from the 14th century, River Nar. Alternative starting points are near Pentney Abbey at TF698121, and at Shouldham Warren car park still remain next to the farm house. A wide range of interesting archaeological objects, which at TF679105. include swords, human remains, coins, metalwork, a harness pendant and a medieval weight, have been found on the site. Getting there Bus services Norfolk Green 37 and 39 (Setchey), From Abbey Farm the route leads southwest away from the river towards Shouldham Warren, Pentney Shuttlebus (Pentney). To walk from Pentney to the alternative starting point near Pentney Abbey is just a fascinating environment where the Brecks and Fens merge and the landscape changes under 2 miles. -
