Maslow. Thesis: English Letters Department, Letters and Humanities Faculty of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta 2015. The purpose of this research is to know what the main character needs for his life and how he fulfills his needs based on the theory of Hierarchy of Human Needs. The writer uses qualitative descriptive analysis method to analyze it. The data are collected from the narrative elements in the film. The writer analyzed this film using Hierarchy of Human Needs theory by Abraham H. Maslow. From the analysis of this film, the writer finds that the main character is troubled about himself. There is an unconfident of him so he decided to change his life to be like another man. He thought that being a hero or a winner is something that can make his life perfect. He just wanted to be like Felix, his partner in his work, who always got a prize and loved by the people. Just because he does not confident of himself who works as wrecker or his people say he is a bad guy he has to face a long journey to find what he really needs in his life. He tried to pursuit his esteem needs and actualize himself in order to make his perfection of life. In the middle of his pursuit, he realized that be another man is a bad thing because he lost everything that he already had before. Finally he felt that be a truly him is good and be a bad guy is not bad until he realized that he got the esteem from others. Background of the Study Today, film not only has an entertainment values, it is also part of the modern life and available in any forms, such as in cinema, television shows, in video cassettes, and laser disc.1 People enjoy all genres of film, for example cartoon or animation film is enjoyed not only by the children but also the adults. So that, there are so many animation studios which have been developed rapidly nowadays. The Walt Disney Company, the biggest American animation studio now is known as Walt Disney Animation Studios, started in 1923 in the rear of a small office occupied by Holly-Vermont Realty in Los Angeles. It was there that Walt Disney, and his brother Roy, produced a series of short live-action/animated films collectively called the ALICE COMEDIES. During the next 14 years, many changes took place at the Disney studio: Mickey Mouse was "born" in 1928, followed by Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, and the rest of the Disney gang.2 In 1937, The Walt Disney Studios released its first fully animated feature films. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs pioneered a new form of family entertainment.3 In 1940, Disney released

Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images.     Disney Pencils in a Return to Hand-Drawn Film MarketWatch Russ Brit March 8, 2007 NEW ORLEANS -- After what will be a five-year hiatus from the medium, Walt Disney Co. on Thursday unveiled a plan to jump back into traditional hand-drawn animation. At its annual meeting, held in Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans, Disney (DIS) announced that its film "The Frog Princess" would be set in the stricken city and is scheduled for release in 2009. It will be Walt Disney's first foray into traditional, two-dimensional animation -- the medium that propelled the company to prominence under its founder and namesake -- since the 2004 effort "Home on the Range," which fizzled at the box office. Of late, the recently acquired Pixar has provided most of Disney's box-office momentum in the field of animation, with such hits as "Cars" and "The Incredibles." "This movie is going to be classic Disney, but you've never seen this before," said John Lasseter, the creative chief of Pixar, who now oversees all of Disney's animation operations. It's unclear, however, whether the company intends to follow "Frog Princess" with another hand-drawn effort. Studio spokeswoman Heidi Trotta said there Disney had no announcement on other hand-drawn films. The move is a gamble because Disney's other recent hand-drawn efforts have joined "Home on the Range" as box-office disappointments. 2002's "Treasure Planet" was a huge failure, and the company was forced almost immediately to take a write-down on the $140 million-budget film. To boot, "Treasure Planet" directors John Musker and Ron Clements are again at the helm for "Frog Princess." While the 2002 movie took a bath, the duo also was responsible for Disney hits "Aladdin" and "The Little Mermaid," the latter of which launched the company into its most recent era of animated hits, in 1989.

    Animation Guide Summer 2017 Preface & Acknowledgements This text represents the work of a group of 28 teachers enrolled in a Media Studies course at the University of British Columbia in the summer of 2017, instructed by Dr. Rachel Ralph. While this is apparent, I would argue that the Toy Story franchise as a whole is representative of the history and development of Pixar Animation Studios and its relationship with the Walt Disney Company. Th is twenty- fi ve- year relationship, which was formalized in 1991 when Disney agreed to fi nance the development, produc- tion and distribution of Pixar’s fi rst feature fi lm, has been both turbulent and mutually benefi cial.

DISNEY’S PORTRAYAL OF NONHUMAN ANIMALS IN ANIMATED FILMS BETWEEN 2000 AND 2010 by OANA LEVENTI-PEREZ Under the Direction of Dr. Marian Meyers ABSTRACT This paper used the constant comparative method to examine the 12 animated features released by Disney between 2000 and 2010 for: (1) their representation of nonhuman animals (NHAs) and the portrayal of race, class, gender, and speciesism within this representation, (2) the ways they describe the relationship between humans and NHAs, and (3) whether they promote an animal rights perspective. Three major themes were identified: NHAs as stereotypes, family, and human/NHA dichotomy. Analysis of these themes revealed that Disney’s animated features promote speciesism and celebrate humanity’s superiority by justifying the subordination of NHAs to human agency. Furthermore, while Disney’s representation of NHAs remains largely anthropocentric, most of its animated features do not reflect the tenets of animal rights.
