About George Dewey The life of Admiral George Dewey has been extensively covered in published journals and monographs. He was born in Montpelier, VT, on 26 December 1837, the youngest son of Julius Yemans Dewey (1801-1877) and Mary Perrin Dewey (1799-1843). He attended Norwich University from 1851 to 1854 but did not graduate, instead transferring to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1858. Dewey’s part in the Battle of Manila Bay, 1 May 1898, is also well-known and well-documented in more authoritative sources. Following this spectacular naval triumph, George Dewey became the first admiral of the U.S. Navy on 3 March 1899. He married Mildred McLean Hazen (1850-1931). The control file included with the collection, as well as the collection itself, contains much additional information on the life and career of George Dewey.
