Somerset SMASH IT LEAGUE

Rules 1. Aim To create a competitive, but friendly women’s softball cricket league.

2. 2.1 Two sets of , 19 yards apart (can be flexible based the size of the home ) 2.2 Boundaries are ideally of 40 – 50 yards 3. Teams 3.1 Each team comprises of 8 players. Squad size can be flexible. 3.2 Other teams may lend players to ensure the can take place. This is a local rule and the nature of ‘player loans’ will be discussed prior to the game starting between the two playing teams.

4. The Start 4.1 The two teams a coin to decide which team has the choice of either or first. 4.2 Teams can choose whether they wish to bat with wooden bats or plastic bats.

5. The 5.1 The ball should be a senior size incrediball 5.2 The should be supplied by the host.

6. The Game 6.1 Throughout the league each game shall consist of one per team, each innings to be 12 overs long of 6 ball overs.

7. Batting & 7.1 The batting side shall be divided into pairs, each pair batting for 3 overs, with a new pair starting at the end of the third, sixth and ninth . 7.2 Each team starts batting with a of 200 runs. 7.3 Each time a batter is out, 5 runs are deducted and the other batter of the pair faces the next ball. 7.4 A batter may be out , , out, , hits . 7.5 There is no LBW law unless the batter deliberately blocks the ball with a leg or foot. 7.6 Runs will be scored in the normal way, as will byes. 7.7 2 runs will be awarded to the batting team for each ball and no-ball bowled, but no ball will be allocated, except in the final over of each innings when, in addition to the 2 runs, an extra ball will be bowled. See glossary overleaf for details. 7.8 At the end of the first 3 overs, the first pair of batters retires and is replaced by the second pair until all 4 pairs have batted for 3 overs each. 7.9 The second team then bats for its 12 overs. 7.10 If a team has less than the full complement of 8 players, then the person(s) who scored the lowest runs, shall bat again to ensure pairs bat.

8. and Fielding 8.1 Each player can bowl a maximum of 3 overs 8.2 Bowling will take place from one end only. 8.3 Bowling should be over arm where possible. will encourage bowlers to ball overam, unless it is to the detriment of the batter. Under arm bowling will be accepted, if the bowler really struggles to bowl over arm.

8.4 Players on the fielding side DO NOT need to rotate fielding positions. 8.5 With the exception of the wicketkeeper no fielder may field within 10 yards of the wicket, measured from the middle except behind the wicket on the off-side. A fielder may move into the restricted area to field a ball provided he/she was outside the area when the stroke was made.

9. The 9.1 The team with the higher score wins. In the event of a the team taking more wickets will be the winner. 9.2 The results should be uploaded to Cricket within a week of the fixture.

10. Umpires 10.1 Each team is to provide one . 10.2 Two umpires per pitch – the square leg umpire is responsible for scoring the game (ideally this will be a batsmen from the batting side – the square leg is there to advise on run outs and no balls).

11. Scoring 11.1 Each team will be responsible for providing a scorer. Each teams scorer is advised to work together so agreement is reached on the game score.

11.2 Scorers can use the play cricket app where the fixtures will be loaded, or they can score manually.

11.3 All scoresheets need to be uploaded to play cricket.

12. Age 12.1 Women’s softball cricket is a game designed for women, but it is recognised that younger girls may wish to play. A junior may play, but has to be at least 13 years of age and have experience of playing cricket. It will be the clubs responsibility to ensure that the player playing is able to deal with the physical game and the emotional game.

13. County Players 13.1 Whilst the league is still very new with many women playing for the first time, we ask that each team plays within the spirit of cricket. Whist we are not saying county players cannot play, we ask that teams have an employ an element of common sense that allows those women playing for the first time to have good experience. This will require County players to have consideration for their bat opposition. The ethos of the league is very much about inclusion and we want to grow the game and whilst we recognise that County players want to play, we ask that they do so in the spirit the was created. County players should not be taking multiple wickets. Glossary

14. An Over 10.1 An over consists of 6 balls.

15. LBW 15.1 In the very simple terms, a batter can be given out if the umpire feels that a ball, which hits the batter’s leg, would have hit the stumps. This law will not be used unless a batter deliberately blocks or kicks the ball away with the leg or foot.

16. Byes 16.1 If a batter misses the ball, or if it hits their body, they may still run and score byes.

17. Wide ball 17.1 A ball that is too far from the batter to strike will be called a wide. A ball will not be called a wide, no matter how wayward it may be, if the batter manages to hit it. 17.2 Wides are scored as two additional runs to the batting team and not re-bowled unless it is the final over. 17.3 In the final over, wides are only score 1 additional run to the batting the team.

17.4 If a ball results in more than 2 wides, the wide will be added to additional runs etc scored.

18. No ball 18.1 If a ball bounces more than twice before reaching the batsman, or if it reaches the batsman above hip/pocket height without bouncing, it will be called a no ball.

18.2 If a bowling underarm, the ball must bounce once, but not more than twice before reaching the batter.

18.3 A batsman may hit a no ball and if the shot results in 3 of more runs being scored, that score will count and the 2 runs for the no ball will be ignored. If 1 or 2 runs are scored the batsman will be credited for the 2 runs for the no ball.

18.4 No Balls are scored as two additional runs to the batting team and not re-bowled unless it is the final over. 18.5 In the final over, No Balls are only score 1 additional run to the batting the team.
