Dundee Directory REFERENCE DEPARTMENT. ^0. IsL^Mm ®lass ''OLD DUNDEE" COLLECTION. I This Coij-ection, brought together by the late I Mr A. C. LAMB, F.S.A. Scot, (died 1897), who devoted many years to the collecting of MSS., BOOKS, and PICTURES illustrating the history of Dundee, was acquired in 190T by EDWARD COX, Esq., M.A., of Cardean, and presented to the Free Library. > '^•Vt.4.ti^V^^Vk/kV\A.Vk\ ^& f:,fi,P 572 886X coo "ol^ S8<oX DUNDEE DIRECTORY GENERAL REGISTER, 1834 DUNDEE: mCHIBALD ALLARDICE, HIGH STREET. MDCCCXXXIV. Printed at the CiinaxiciE Office, Dundee, PREFACE. The following pages have been compiled by- Mr. Thomas Keith. The original intention was to give a mere list of the principal inhabi- tants in alphabetical order ; with a few subordi- nate lists and tables connected with the trade of the place. It was thought that this might be accomplished without adding materially to the size or price of former publications of the same description. A very little experience led to a contrary conviction. After the utmost pains had been bestowed in preparing the alphabetical list of names, it was suggested that the occupations and places of residence of many individuals might be inacciu-ately given ; and that it would be pro- per to leave slips at the houses of the inhabitants, inviting them to write upon them their names, occupations, and places of abode, as they wished these to appear in the Directory. By this means upwards of 1500 corrections were made on the list as it was originally prepared ; and had it not been for neglect on the part of some persons to furnish the requisite information, very few errors would have remained. As it stands, however, the present Directory wiU be found a considerable improvement on previous attempts. An addi- tional sheet will be published in July, in which such errors as may be discovered will be cor- rected,—names omitted will be added, and re- movals at the term of Whitsunday next in- serted. The supplement, with the present pub- lication, will supply a tolerably complete Direc- tory from Whitsunday 1834 to Whitsunday 1835. Tlie supplement will be sold to purchasers of this compilation for the price of the paper. It will be seen that the Alphabetical list forms but a small part of the Directory. A mass of PREFACE. information connected with the town has been brought together, and arranged in such a way as, it is hoped, will render it useful. Every endea vour has been used to secure accuracy, though this important object may not, in every instance, have been attained. With regard to the historical sketch, it is very far from being complete even as a Sketch, and has, indeed, been abruptly terminated from want both of time and space. The notices which have been presented may serve, however, to convince some individual competent to the task, that a good history of Dundee, and of its trade and ma- nufactures, is now a great desideratum. The sub- ject is not without some pretension to dignity, and it is of the utmost practical importance. It would make a considerable octavo volume ; and, if to it were added, a few of the more important mercantile tables, and a summary of the existing Acts of Parliament, so far as applicable to the trade of Dundee, its value would be greatly en- hanced. We recommend these suggestions to the consideration of the Chamber of Commerce, imder whose auspices they could be easily carried into effect—to the individual benefit of the mem- l^ers as well as that of the community. Should sufficient encouragement be afforded, the Directory, with such of the lists and tables as require annual correction, will be reprinted in July each year. Suggestions for its improvement will be thankfully received by the publisher. Proposed Dundee Local Development Plan Development Sites Assessment October 2012 Proposed Dundee Local Development Plan Development Site Assessment Information This document has been prepared to identify the development sites for inclusion in the Proposed Dundee Local Development Plan 2014. The document has been prepared in partnership with the Key Agencies and other stakeholders to provide a detailed assessment of the development potential of each site. The sites are made up of those: • carried forward from the Dundee Local Plan Review 2005; • identified in the Housing Land Audit; • Dundee City Council owned sites which have become surplus to requirements or scheduled for demolition and clearance work; • identified as part of ongoing physical regeneration works or other Council activities; • nominated by developers and landowners, including sites identified via a call for sites consultation process in late 2010 and through the consultation exercise for the Main Issues Report in 2011, and; • others brought to the attention of the Council over the period of the preparation of the Proposed Plan. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process and the Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA) have been used to assess the environmental impacts of implementing the Plan's preferred spatial strategy. The SEA and HRA have assisted in identifying the most appropriate locations for development in terms of potential impacts on the environment. The site assessment results contained in this document are part of this process and have helped to ensure that the decisions on individual sites were not taken in isolation but considered a range of planning and environmental considerations and the potential cumulative effects of the developments proposed.

As God can send a nation or people no greater blessing than to give them faithful, sincere, and upright ministers, so the greatest curse that God can possibly send upon a people in this world is to give them over to blind, unregenerate, carnal, lukewarm and unskilful guides. And yet, in all ages, we find that there have been many wolves in sheep's clothing, many that daubed with untempered mortar, that prophesied smoother things than God did allow. As it was formerly" so it is now: there are many that corrupt the Word of God and deal deceitfully with it. It was so in a special manner in the prophet Jeremiah's time; and he, faithful to that God that employed him, did not fail, from time to time, to open his mouth against them and to bear a noble testimony to the honour of that God in whose name he from time to time spake.

He was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland on 29 September 1735 and the last of eighteen children born to John Keir (1686-1743) and Magdaline Lind (1691-1775). Both the Keir and Lind families had considerable wealth and were influential in Edinburgh politics. John served in various capacities on the Town Council before he died in 1743 and Magdaline sold the family estates of Muirton and Queenshaugh to care for her large family, including James who was just eight years old. After studying at the High School in Edinburgh (1742-8), Keir took classes in medicine and chemistry at the University of Edinburgh (1754-7), where Andrew Plummer probably instructed him in practical chemistry. During his tenure at university, Keir also became acquainted with Erasmus Darwin. Their friendship flourished through correspondence, even when Keir left Edinburgh without finishing his degree to join the West Indies militia in 1757. Military Career During his service abroad, Keir maintained his scholarly pursuits. He awoke early each morning to read from the classics and to translate the Greek military historian, Polybius. In 1790, he published An Essay on the Martial Character of Nations. Another forthcoming text, A Dictionary of the Art of War, was advertised that same year but was unfortunately burned at the publisher’s shop. When England was under threat by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803, Keir again took up his pen to write Reflexions on the Invasion of Great-Britain by the French Armies.
