Z«tkü-mdü«€R£lposE RundschreibemderArbeitsgemeinschaft Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten in der Philatelie gegründet 1987 Jan. / Febr. 2007 Liebe Arge-Mitglieder, kalendarisch soll es ja nun langsam auf den Frühling zugehen. Sie kennen sicher die alte Bauernregel „Wenn es Lichtmeß stürmt und schneit, ist der Frühling nicht mehr weit, ist es aber klar und hell kommt er sicher nicht so schnell". Lassen wir uns am 2. Februar überraschen. Hoffentlich hält sich der Winter in diesem Jahr nicht so lange wie 2006. Unsere Kakteen sind Kinder des Lichts und brauchen Sonne und Wärme. Sonst stellen sie sich die Frage „Was nun, raus mit den Gefühlen oder nicht?" Sollen wir Knospen treiben oder lieber noch warten? Da haben es unsere gezähnten Kakteen einfacher, denen ist das Wetter da draußen gleichgültig, sie schlummern friedlich in unseren Alben und freuen sich, wenn ein Sammler mal das Album aufschlägt und nach seinen Lieblingen aus Papier schaut. ln diesem Sinne wünsche ich lhnen ein blütenreiches Kakteenjahr und viele neue Kakteen- und Sukkulenten-Briefmarken. Vielleicht sehen wir uns ja im Mai in Berlin zu unserem 20jährigen Arge-Jubiläum. Katalog: Ein Abo für die Nachträge Frank Kafi(a Spärlich fließt der Fluss. We developed an explicit phylogenetic framework to explore links between the rich traditions of medicinal use and leaf succulence in aloes. Results: The phylogenetic hypothesis clarifies the origins of Aloe vera to the Arabian Peninsula at the northernmost limits of the range for aloes. The genus Aloe originated in southern Africa ~16 million years ago and underwent two major radiations driven by different speciation processes, giving rise to the extraordinary diversity known today. Large, succulent leaves typical of medicinal aloes arose during the most recent diversification ~10 million years ago and are strongly correlated to the phylogeny and to the likelihood of a species being used for medicine. A significant, albeit weak, phylogenetic signal is evident in the medicinal uses of aloes, suggesting that the properties for which they are valued do not occur randomly across the branches of the phylogenetic tree. Conclusions: Phylogenetic investigation of plant use and leaf succulence among aloes has yielded new explanations for the extraordinary market dominance of Aloe vera. -

The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbol- ises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. L’ensemble de la flore vasculaire, dite flore « supérieure », a été analysée et passée au crible des critères de la Liste rouge, soit 905 espèces indigènes de fougères et de plantes à fleurs de La Réunion. Réalisé par le Comité français de l’UICN, le Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, la Fédération des conservatoires botaniques nationaux et le Conservatoire botanique national de Mascarin, cet état des lieux montre que 49 espèces végétales (5,4%) ont déjà disparu de l’île et que 275 autres (30,4%) sont aujourd’hui menacées. La destruction et la dégradation des habitats naturels représentent la principale cause de régression des espèces végétales réunionnaises. Le développement urbain et agricole est responsable de la disparition progressive de nombreuses espèces, comme le Bois de lait (Tabernaemontana persicariifolia), arbuste de la zone littorale classé “En danger critique d’extinction”. -

Antiplasmodial Potential and Quantification of Aloin and Aloe

Quantitative HPTLC (high performance thin layer chromatography) analysis of important anthraquinones aloin and aloe-emodin and antiplasmodial activity of crude aqueous extracts was done to estimate the effects of these constituents on antiplasmodial potential of the plant. Methods: HPTLC system equipped with a sample applicator Linomat V with CAMAG sample syringe, twin rough plate development chamber (20 x 10 cm), TLC Scanner 3 and integration software WINCATS 1.4.8 was used for analysis of aloin and aloe-emodin amount. The antiplasmodial activity of plant extracts was assessed against a chloroquine (CQ) sensitive strain of P. falciparum (MRC-2). Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of aqueous extracts of selected samples was determined according to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended method that was based on assessing the inhibition of schizont maturation in a 96-well microtitre plate. EC (effective concentration) values of different samples were observed to predict antiplasmodial potential of the plant in terms of their climatic zones. Results: A maximum quantity of aloin and aloe-emodin i.e. 0.45 and 0.27 mg/g respectively was observed from the 12 samples of Aloe vera. The inhibited parasite growth with EC50 values ranging from 0.289 to 1056 μg/ml. -
