The purpose of this work \'las to determine the survival of the smolts to the adult staze, and to determine the utilization of these fish. The search for finclipped adults \125 spread over a Hide area of eastern Canada, but was concentrated at the counting fep-ces on the rivers where smolts had been marked" and at a few ports ,;here large quantities of ,salmon o·lere landed. '

This report conta:lDs a summary of the numbers of commercial Newfoundland and Labrador salmon examined, and the numbers of finclipped fish found by the special ,observers. In addition, it contains a summary of the total salmon landings for tleufoundland 8.nd Labrador. A SUlT1r.lary of the exports of Atlantic salmon is included.

A note on the use of the names Ne\{foundland and,Labrador is in order. Since 1965 "Newfoundland and Labrador" has been the official name of' the Province. "llel{foundland" by itself n01/ refers only to the islend of Newfoundland, and Labrador is the part of the province that is on the northeast portion of the Canadian mainland.

Two observe~s were employed each sUlllr.1Br from 1953 to 1963. A university student was stationed at North Sydney, Nova Scotia, each year. This man was' hired by the Fisheries Research Board until 1959, and in the fo11mn.ng years, by the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. The observer was supervised by Dr. C. J. Kerswill of the Fisheries Research Board at St. Andre.ls, New Brunswick. The other observer, stationed at Saint John, Neu Brunswick, from 1953 to 1961, tlas a man, 11r. Ernest rhompson', who \Jorked'during the winters as a clerk in the shipping activities at the Saint John port and was \ole11 acquainted \olith local fishermen and fish dealers. He was hired by the Fisheries Research Board 21ld supervised 'by Dr. Kerswi11. In 1960, another position was established in Newfoundland, and the employee, a university student, \o1orked at Bonavista dUring June, and either at Port Union or St. Anthony during JulJ'. Large quantities of "fresh" NeNfoundland and Labrador salmon were shipped through North Sydney. These salmon uere gutted and headles9 and packed in ice in 1100den boxes, 100 pounds of salmon to a box. j,ost boxes contained fish of c.bout the srune size. Each box also contained a label stating the place and date packed, the number of salmon in the box, and the net .reight. Some of the salmon "ere re-iced at North Sydney before being shipped furt'1er, some were shipped on without being re-iced, and the remainder uere frozen.

Three plants haTJdled salmon in North Sydney: North Sydne,,­ Agencies, :.l. B. Nickerson, and Leonard Ero·Ghers. North S,,-dney Agencies and Nickerson's t,aniled "fresh" salmon only. They received their shipments from :Janadian National Rail,mys coastal boats. These boats brou~ht salmon fro'll Port aux Basques. Salrilon uere shipped rail express to this tenninus from many places along the east coast a11d the southern portion of the uest coast of !'3'.~foun:aancl. Coastal boats also collected sa11l10n fro;;! several ;:>laces along the sOllth coast of the island. Leonard's chartered boats to collect sal);1on in northern Ne~Tfoundland and Labrador. These salmon >rere received "fresh" in ice but Nere subsequentlo' frozen.

The observer visited each oE the plants ~·rhen they received their shipments of salmon. As the boxes Here being m,packed he noted the place and number packed from the labels. After 1961, he was also instructeCi to get the net \·/eight of the number in each box. At North Sydney Agencj.es and Nickerson's, each salmon was carefully examined to see if it nas suitable for re-icing. One man unpacked and examined the fish at each plant so the observer could easily look for salmon Hith missing fins. After the salmon had been examined, they IIere washed and repacked in ice in Hooden boxes, 100 pounds of salmon to a box. Many of these fish were shipped rail express to various places in Canada and the United States.

At Leonard's, salmon vere uD.pac'{ed and cleaned by several men. The observer looked at the salmon as tpey were being unpac'{ed, and again after they had been cleaned. 0ach salmon \las then placed on a !Jan and frozen. Uhen salmon l1ere being hE:.1dled by 2 or 3 plants simultan­ eously, tlle observer spent most of his time at the plant processing the largest quantity. "/hen Leonard's were handling large numbers of salmon, the observer arranged uith North So'liney Agencies 2l1d Nickerson's to hold fish beliaved to have missing fins for his exrunination later in the day. Often, hO\,ever, these salmon could not be withheld because -8-

they were being re-iced while being trans-shipped. The men handling and icing the salmon then determined the fins that uere missing and collected the measurements, l~eights, scale samples, and fin scars for the observer. In 1961, the observer was instructed to discontinue accepting infonnation and, sa!nples from the men at North Sydney Agencies and Nickerson's because ma11Y salnon exaDiined during the previous years had not been properly weighed a..'1d scale sampled. The employees of the plants were not subject to Fisheries Research B,oaI'd supervision and by eliminating their observations one possible source of error ~las removed.

Detailed, reports on the numbers of salmon examined alld the numbers found were prepared daily and submitted periodically to the Biological Station, St. AmtreI'Ts, Nel{ Brunswick. Scale samples and fin scars accompanied the reports. Rewards of one dollar per valid finclip ,~ere paid by cheque from St. Andrews to tile dealer or one of his employees. The man receiving the reward ,{as designated by the observer 'ati.d was usually the' person who first handled o~ saw the fish.

SAINT JOHN

When the' observer was first stationed at Saint John, New Brunswick', in ,195.3, most of the salmon from Ne~rfoundlan

, The observer 'followed the Sall1e, procedure for examining salmon for missing fins as used ,by thO' North Sydney observers. All the boxes had been shipped via North Sydney but many had not been opened there. Finclipped salmon that had been examined at North Sydney Here usually recognized by the absence of both ventral fins and by the associated fresh cuts made by the North Sydney ~bserver at the base of one of the ventral fins, '

As at North Sydney, the observer niaintained daily' contact with all establishments' where salmon might be handled, 'and arranged for the dealers or, their employees to hold salmon for his examination that ;re'I'Q believed to have ,:Jissing fins. He usually spent most of his time each day at the establishment handling the largest number of salmon.

In addition to examining salmon from Ne~rfoundland ,and Labrador, the observer also examined salmon that had been caught in Saint John harbour and in other places in the Haritime Provinces. He collected a large series of scale samples from salmon caught in Saint John harbour and in the Saint John River for life history studies.', '

Between 1953 and 1955, considerable C!uantities of "fresh" Ne!ifoundland and Labrador salmon Here shipped to Saint John. After 1955, however, shipnents of salmon frOT" Ne~

In 1960, ,ihen Great Britain removed the quota on Canadian salmon, it was believed that reduced shipments to North Sydney would result. An observer was stationed at a plant in Newfoundland to examine fish destined for Britain. He worked at Fishery Products' plants because they purchased large quantities of salmon for sale in Brite.in and the United States. In 1960 and 1961, they processed salmon at their plant in Port Union, and in 1962 and 1963, at St. Anthony.

Fishery Products purchased salmon in Hhite Bay and southern Labrador. Chartered boats collected the selmon. The connnercial fishing season in these areas began during June and continued until about mid July. The peak of the season occurred tOtlards the end of June. Host of the salmon were landed at the plant during the first 2 weeks of July. The fish'lere landed gutted and headless, and packed in ice in "TOoden boxes, 100 pounds of salmon to a box. At St. Anthony, locally-caught salmon !

At Port Union and at St. Anthony, the observer noted the place and date packed, and the number and net ,reight from the label on each box just before it was unpacked. He examined the salmon as they !;ere being taken from the box, and again after they had been cleaned. He counted the loce~ly-caught salmon at St. Anthony with a hand tally as they were being cleaned and culled. Each fincliF;Jed salmon was weighed and scale sampled. Fin scars Here not removed because this mutilated the fish and spoiled the resale value. The observer also weighed and scale-sampled a small number of non-finclipped salmon.

Fishery Products froze all their salmon. The method was the same as at Leonard's in North Sydney.

As at North Sydney detailed reports on the number and ,reight of salmon examined and the number and weight of finclipped salmon found ,;ere prepared daily and submitted periodically to St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Rewards of one dollar per valid finclip were paid by cheque from St. Andrews to the plant employee ,.ho found the salmon first. The observer Horked at one of Fishery Products' plants for 6 or 7 ~Ieelcs e<:.ch year beginning in late June. Because he l1as available for 10 or 11 ,rocks e:::ch summer, he had time to Hork at enother port. Bonavista Has chosen for 3 reasons. First, it uas the centor of u good salmon fish",ry. Second, the sulmon were lD.ndeci round, l1hich provided ar: excellent opportunity to obtain length, lIeight, sex, and age data. Third, the peak of the fishery occurred in June, the time wren the observer uus available.

The firm of'J. T. Swyers purchased most of the salmon landed at Bonavista and at the ne:lrby communities of Ar:1herst Cove, Hel1mans Gove, and Znglish Hm-bour. The fishery began about mid-~lay in this area and conticlIed until late June or early July.

Sa):;ion ~lere brought to the plant round and loose iII trucks sent out by the plant to collect the fish from the fishermen. The observer exam..!'led the sa"lmon .~.s they,rore received at the plant. He obto.ined the length, ,reight, sex, and a scule sa·.lple from e:lch salmon with missing fins. Sach finclipped fish uas mar){ed with red string tied around the caudal peduncle. This infomed the observer in North Sydney t~'lo.t the Sall1l0n had already been recorded. Fin scars ~rere not renoved. The observer also measured, Ileighec5., sexed, and scale-sampled a large number of non-finclipped salmon. The enalysis of these data ..Jill be presented in a separate mD.Iluscript report.

As at Port Union and St. Anthony, the observer prepared detailed reports on the number and "eight of salmon eXDlilined and on the number and Height of finclipped salmon found. These reports and the scale Sami}les of finclipped salmon uere submitted periodicully to St. Andre'ls. Rewards of one dollur per valid finclip ,rere paid by cheque from St. AndreHs to the fisherman uho caught the fish. :'lhenevt:r the fishennan was not known, the re\o1ard lias paid to the employee in the plant who first saw or handled the fish.

Most of the data contained in this repert are tabulated on the basis of area. These are alphabetical and statistical and they refer to the areas where salmon lIere landed. They uere established by the Department of Fisheries of CD.Ilada in 1952; they are defined in Table 2 and illustrated in Figure 2. !lost of them represent natural geographical divisions of the coasts of Neufoundland and Labrador. The Department of Fisheries of Cane.da collects tho data on the total .~i3ht of sal,.'!on 12.nded in each of the statistical areas of the province: Data on numbers are not c.ollected. Landings for the j''El'ars 1952-1963 are summarized in Table 6. They declined from about 3.4 million ,POunds in 1952 to about 1.6 million in 1956! and rose again to about 2.7 Billion in 1963. The reduction in numbers examined a.t Horth SYd~ey since 1960 Ilas not, therefore, caused by decreased catches.

The nlLr.'lbers of salmon landod annually are required to compare ,lith the .nur.l~ers examined by the observers a'ld to calculate the utilization of marked samon by the fishery. Because data on numbers landed are lacking, it Has necessary to estimate them. Hr. C. R. The estima.ted numbers of grilse and "salmon" landed iII each of the statistical areas of Newfoundl2.Ild and Labrador for the years 1953 to 1963 are listed in tables in Appendix II. The figures were derived from the data in Table 6 using the proportions listed above. Even though these ~rcentagos are approxilnations for only Orle year, they Here assumed to be an averflP,e for all years. The calculations also involved the average ueights of grilse and "salmon". The weight of a "salmon" >las taken to be 10 pounds. This figure lated from the BonaVista and ~ort Union-3t. Anthony totals in 8-11, Appendix I.

The average weight of'a grilse Has. taken to be 4 pounds. It 01"-3 based on the grilse landings at BonaVista for 1961 and 1962 (Tables 9 and 10, Appendix I). The salmon fishery 1{aS poor there then and the fishermen sold almost all of their grilae to SI-IJ-ers. :'/hen the fishery is good, the fishermen do not usually sall all of their grilse to the plants. The latter prefer to process "salmon" because they require less handling and command a better price. The fishermen select the larger grilse for t 1;e plants and keep the smaller ones for themselves. For these reasons, therefore, it was assULled that 4 pounds ~Iaa a reasonably accurate representation of the average lreight of grilse take:! b~- the fishermen.

The estilnated numbers of ~rilse and "saJ..l:lOn" landed and the nunbers examined are compared in the teo.bles in Appendix II•. },ost of the comparisons seem reasonable. Three are not. They are: area "L" grilse for 1955, area "0" "salmon" for 1956, and area "J" grilse for 1963. In each case, more fish were reported examined than were estilnatedtohavebeenlanded.

The observers examined salmon from all areas of Newfoundland and Labrador except the Southern Shore (area F), St. Haryl S Bay (area G), Placentia Bay (area H), and the Straits of Belle Isle (area N) (Table 7). Salmon from Conception Beo.y (area :;;) Here examined in only one year of the eleven-year period. The special observers examined about 54% of the estimated Labrador landings and about 16% of the estimated Ne1'1foundland landings (Table 7). This me2l1S that about 27'1 of the estimated total landings were examined.

Grilse form a significant part of the salmon catch of Nel~foundland ane Labrador. ,'lbout 27% of the salmon examined Here grilse (Table 3). '..,hen allowance is mac.e for the fact that not all grilse are sold to the plants, Hr. l:olson's estimate that half the catch is grilse seems re.alistic•

The data were collected by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on the basis of the province from which salmon ~Iere exported. Sixteen different cOl'lbinations of missing fins were'reported and about half had only the adipose fin missing (Tables 11 and 12). Four different combinations, na.'l\ely, adipose, adipose-dorsal, adipose-left ventral, and adipose-right ventral, comprised about 98% of the marks reported. These marked salmon 'rere frOB a river, or rivers, in quebec, the Little Codroy in Newfoondland, anG. the Iiiramichi in New Brunswick (Table 1). Sone of the adipose onlyfincUpsill1953,1954,and possibly 1955, may have been survivors from the Pollett River G"lolt rur:s of 1950, 1951, and 1952. Some of the other rlar!<:s reported represent fish marked by other agencies on other rivers. In addition, some of the marks reported may not be legitimate. These could have resulted from errors in observation, as uell as fin regeneration, ,There part or all of one fin has regenerated resulting in a mark differeclt from that intended.

S:iJ<:ty fincUpped salmon uere found at ,Bonavista (Table 11). Each ,TaS marked "ith a red string tied around the caudal peduncle. Fifty-five uere sent to North Sydney Agencies in llorth Sydney. Only 8 of these were reported by the obseirver there, and 5 ,.•ere listed from a port other than Bonavista.

The distriblition of the 4 marks found most frequently by the special observers in tHe commercial salmon from i'le,rfoundland and Labrador is shOlm in Fi3ure 3. 1\To-thirds of the finclipped salmon 'Tere caught in Labrador (area 0), St. George's Bay (are<.: K), and Bonavista Bay (area C).

About 54% of the ma'rked salmon reported had only the adipose fin lnissing (Table 11). About half of these Here from salmon caught in Labrador, and about 1/3 of the remainder ,rere caught in Hhite Bay (area A), Bonavista Bay (area C), and along the Soutlmest Coast (area J) (Figure 3). Relatively, more adipose marks were reported from the Southuest Coast (area'J) and St. George's Bay (area K). There ,TaS only about one salmon with the adipose fin missing in every 1,000 salmon from Labrador.

A total of 419 salmon "ere reported ,lith the dorsal and adipose fins missing (Table 11). These ",ere Little Codroy River marks. About 72%, or about 10.41 per 1,000 examined, ~rere reported from St. Goorge's Bay (area K) (Figure 3). Host of these salmon lrere landed at settle­ ments near the mouth of the Little Codroy River. There uere about 0.5 adipose-dorsal marks per 1,000 salmon examined from other ~,reas ill Uelrfoundland, and only' about 0.04 per 1,000 from Labrador.

A total of 482 fincUpped salmon "ere reported llith the adipose-left ventral and adipose-right ventral fins missing (Table 11). A little more than half (252, or 52%) had been marked on the Northuest 11:i.ramichi, and the remainder, 230, ,'rcre from the South,rest Miramichi. Approximately equal numbers of adipose-left ventral and adipose-right ventral were reported from each of the areas where salmon had been examined (Figure 3). There was one exception hOlrever, more adipose­ right ventral marks were reported from St. George's Bay (area K). About half the Miramichi marks lrere reported from Bonavista and Trinity Bays (areas C and D). I~

No Hiramichi marks were reported from Bonavista in 1961 and 1962 (Ap;:>endix III, Tables 9 and 10). The sumon fishery was poor there then (Table 5). It may be coincidence, but it is possible that the 2 events Here associated, and that the poor fishery \las caused by an absence of llir3michi salmon.

Thoro are 2 groups of adult Atlantic salr.lOn, maiden salmon and previousl}' spa,med salmon. Previously spa,med salmon have spallned at least once; maiden salmon have not spawned. In Appendix III, maiden salmon are classified on the b2.sis of their sea age, namely, 1, 2 or 3 sea years. Approximately 72% of the finclipped salmon had spent 2 years at s~a, 2z,; one year, and 3% had spent 3 years at sea. Previously spawned salmon could be simi12xly classified, as well as by the number of times the;, spa,med. These data ,mre not treated in this fashion because they comprised only 2% of the number of marks reported. -29-
