Our mission The mission of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis is to benefit the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families through individual and family support, education, public awareness and advocacy.

Annual Report 3 From the Board President Greetings,

Thank you for your support of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis this past year! I hope you enjoy reviewing our 2014- 2015 annual report. Thanks to all of your support, our organization has once again been able to enrich the lives of those individuals with Down syndrome in our community

The organization is in an excellent position as fiscal year-end 2015 draws to a close. The fact that our financial condition continues to remain strong has allowed us to expand programs for our membership once again. We’ve continued to add programs for teens and adults and have continued to improve on our more traditional programs. In this past fiscal year, the organization launched our Employment Initiative which has seen three individuals gain meaningful, paid employment and eight others have completed pre-employment training. Through the initiative, we held two Employer Summits and welcomed over a dozen local businesses to learn about the benefits of hiring individuals with Down syndrome. The organization also received quite a bit of recognition, including the 2015 Down Syndrome Affiliates in Action “Affiliate of the Year” award as well as six other national awards for marketing and awareness materials.

An annual report allows for the opportunity to reflect on past accomplishments. With that said, there’s still much work to be done. DSAGSL is a great resource for individuals and families who’ve already connected with us, but there are many in our community we haven’t yet reached. I recognize our responsibility to engage those whose personal situations make it difficult for them to participate – those on the outskirts of the geographical area we traditionally serve, those with social or economic barriers to engaging our services, or those whose life situation simply leaves little time or energy leftover. The organization looks forward to making progress in these areas during the upcoming year. We welcome your help in doing so - please call us if you’re able to help in any way.

Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize some very important contributors to our mission’s success. First, thank you to a truly great Board of Directors; thank you for your time, treasure and passion. I’m equally, and maybe even a little bit more so, appreciative of our excellent staff. They are an excellent team and each of them works very hard, every day, to benefit the lives of individuals with Down syndrome in our community. Finally, and most important of all, thanks to each one of you reading this! Our organization truly is a collection of several thousand like-minded individuals. You are what makes this organization work, and makes the work we do worthwhile. Please continue to stay engaged and please continue to hold us accountable in meeting your needs.

Can you believe that the DSAGSL is 40 years young? It’s true! The DSAGSL turned 40 years old in 2016. Forty years ago, a small group of parents came together to support one another. Forty years later, as you will see in this report, we are bigger and stronger than ever! Every time I write a report such as this, I am reminded of how much can be done when great, passionate people come together to make change. Our organization was built with the dedication of our families and we continue to grow with your help. Forty years after our inception, we are proud to still be exploring new services such as employment, aging workshops, friendship programs, and new family networking.

As you will see in this report, the 2015-16 fiscal year was full of exciting achievements and new programming. Highlights include: • Thirty-three friendship matches made through our partnership with Best Buddies Missouri • Two new self-advocate interns in training through our DSAGSL Office Internship Program. • An evening of joy at our 40th Anniversary Gala, which welcomed 250 of our members to celebrate and honor those who helped us get where we are today. • Twenty-five educators served through a pilot in-service Education Specialist Program and 100 educators through our 4-part series. • DSAGSL hosted its 2nd Employer Summit with over 20 individuals from businesses such as WWT, Service Source, Paraquad, and St. Louis Life, and answered questions about how to create a more disability-inclusive workplace. • We unveiled the Calamia & Reineri Legacy Wall, a wonderful space to share milestones and remember loved ones.

As you can see, our organization serves so many different groups – parents, adults with Down syndrome, new families, educators, and community members. And we don’t do it alone. I offer a tremendous “thank you” to our outstanding Board of Directors, our amazing staff, dedicated volunteers, and of course, our valued members.

Annual Report 7 DSAGSL Programs Education • 100 educators graduated DSA’s Education Specialist Program over three different sessions. Additionally, a pilot in-service program was offered. • DSAGSL delivered 20 presentations to over 1200 educators, school-aged kids, and first year medical students at Saint Louis University. • Staff attended multiple trainings, conferences, workshops, and advocacy meetings each month on important topics affecting the Down syndrome community

Resources and Referrals • Sharing Our Strategies (SOS), a private Facebook group for families, reached 322 members. • DSAGSL actively engaged with the community by answering questions, giving referrals, and providing support through e-mail, social media, and in person visits. Information and advice was given on topics such as inclusion, hearing loss, feeding, potty-training, childcare, pediatricians, behavior, OT and PT professionals, and aging.

Awareness and Advocacy • DSAGSL hosted its 2nd Employer Summit with over 20 individuals from businesses such as WWT, Service Source, Paraquad, and St. Louis Life, and answered questions about how to create a more disability-inclusive workplace. • With the help and partnership of local area photographers, 84 individuals with Down syndrome and their families received free professional photography session. Digital copies of the photographs were then donated to DSA to use in the annual Friends for All Seasons Calendar. which raises awareness with over 700 calendars sold. • DSA staff represented the Down syndrome community at Disability Rights Legislative Day in Jefferson City, MO • DSAGSL was featured on 2 radio shows and 1 television segment providing wide-spread awareness.

Community Engagement • Community Groups are stronger than ever at the DSAGSL. They include the Down Syndrome Group of the Lake of the Ozarks, Central Missouri Down Syndrome Family Network, Heartland DSA, Jefferson County CG, Kirksville CG, Kirkwood/Webster Moms, North County CG, and St. Charles CG. Illinois community groups include the Metro East Down Syndrome Alliance and Southern Illinois CG • Volunteer engagement remains an integral part of the organization with more than 250 volunteers and over 1,000 hours contributed • DSA is thrilled to have had installed the Calamia & Reineri Legacy Wall in the office, a wonderful space to share milestones and remember loved ones. • The organization received support from more than 10 third party fundraisers

New Parent and Family Support • 63 new babies were welcomed to the DSAGSL family • Celebration baskets were delivered personally or mailed to ALL new families • 22 of these families had a prenatal diagnosis • 28 families were referred to us by area genetic counselors, a visit to the Down Syndrome Center or through their medical professionals • 21 parents contacted us personally • 45 mothers attended our New Mother’s Luncheon in 2015 • 27 families attended our second annual New Family Brunch including grandparents and siblings • The DSAGSL continued to offer 7 volunteers to staff the St. Louis Children’s Annual Report 8 Hospital Down Syndrome Center. • 56 first birthdays were celebrated with a gift of 2 books • 1700 birthday cards were created, signed and mailed by self-advocates in the DSA office. • DSAGSL provided international support this year providing resources and donated items to families in Uganda and Ethiopia. • The organization also provided support to families through needs-based funding for items such as a refrigerator, clothing, and relocation items.

Direct Programming • An average of 10 individuals with Down syndrome participated in the Healthy Start Program • DSA held 6 Therapeutic Playgroups for babies and toddlers and between 5-15 families attended each group • 35 individals with developmental disabilities ranging in age from 8 to 30, participated in the Lydia Cox Memorial Bike Camp, and we had 54 volunteers help us make it happen. • On average, 9 kids with and without Down syndrome had a ball at our Young Athletes Program in partnership with Special Olympics • 23 people participated in Hockey Camp • 14 young men participated in a two-day Football Camp • 23 participated in the Tennis Program • DSA offered 7 workshops and seminars throughout the year on subjects such as aging, IEPs, financial planning, and inclusion • 12 social events were hosted including Hispanic family engagement activities; • More than 75 enrichment classes including yoga and exercise, cooking and healthy eating, art and theater, healthy relationships, and public speaking were held at the DSA office • The Mission Possible: Employment Program was piloted with 6 participants- the program continues to grow.

Special Events • 60 individuals attended this year’s Skate Party and 65 came out for the Bowling Party. These social events bring individuals together for networking, support, and fun. • Over 400 people attended the Pumpkin Palooza family event, a fun fall- themed get together for the whole family. • DSA’s largest awareness event of the year, Walk in the Park, had 2,375 people walking the warning track, meeting the players, and throwing the first pitch. • Sparkle and Shine 40th Anniversary Gala was the first of its kind for DSAGSL, and was a huge success, raising $67,000. • The Holiday Party was a wonderfully festive time with over 250 people in attendance. • The Birdies & Bass Golf Tournament raised over $95,000 and was a fantastic day of fishing and golf. • The 3rd annual Talent Show was a hit! 45 individuals performed in 20 acts, 200 guests attended, and in addition to the show, art and healthy start snacks made by self-advocates were featured. • Over 2,500 community members joined DSAGSL in Forest Park for the annual Step Up for Down Syndrome event. • The 70’s-themed Trivia Night was DSA’s best yet. There were more tables and sponsors than ever before and the event raised over $29,000, an increase from the year before. • Relay and Run for 21 brought in over 500 runners/walkers and 20 sponsors, an raised over $15,000.
