It is a values crisis. What changed in the last generation or two to create the so-called shidduch crisis? Are more females being born? Is it because people are getting married too early or too late? Is the age gap be- tween eligible boys and girls any wider than it was before? Of course not. It’s just that our values have changed—and not for the better. Eliezer’s search for a wife for Yitzchak teaches us to seek a spouse based on sub- stance. Avraham sent Eliezer to wicked people to fi nd a wife for Yitzchak—but those wicked people possessed good character traits (Bereishis 24:3 and Kli Yakar and Rabbeinu Bachaye ad loc.). At every turn of his mission, Eliezer was focused on fi nding a woman who exhibited kindness, compassion, and character. In Rivka, of course, he found all these traits in ample supply. When Rivka fi nally met Yitzchak, “Yitzchak brought her into the tent of Sara, his mother”—that is, “he saw that her deeds were as righteous as those of Sara, his mother” (Bereishis 24:67 and Targum Onkelos ad loc.). Only then would he marry her. It is little wonder that some are ac- customed to read this Torah portion to a groom prior to his wedding (see e.g. Rabbeinu Bachya, Bereishis 24:1; Ritva, Yoma 70a; Abudraham, “Weddings”). For it reminds the groom of all the rea- sons—hopefully the right ones—he chose this woman to be his wife. These days, however, too many peo- ple are focused on all the wrong things. Money. Power. Appearances. Social standing. Those lacking these “quali- ties” seem to be the ones affected most acutely by the shidduch crisis. Coinci- dence? I think not. “One who marries for monetary ben- efi t will have children who do not act properly” (Kiddushin 70a), and one who marries a woman who is not proper for him transgresses fi ve prohibitions and is deemed to have made the world

He asked her for something Midos are but one part of the package The diffi culty with this Rashi is that Eliezer used one limited criterion to fi nd the perfect match for Yitzchak. Let’s grant that this woman had perfect midos and was truly a baalas chesed – that is but one part of the person. Eliezer didn’t ask her a word about her religious beliefs. Perhaps she was an idol worshiper like her father and her brother. She might well have been a “stargazer,” as were many people living at that time. It seems that Eliezer picked one limited focus to the exclusion of everything else, and in doing so, he took a great risk. The answer to this question lies in un- derstanding the centrality of midos in our avodas Hashem. When Hashem created the human, He made us of two distinct parts. There is a part of me that is prepro- grammed to do everything that is good, right, and proper. There is a full half of me that only wants to be generous, magnanimous, and giving. This is my n’shamah, born of the highest elements in the cosmos. It yearns for a loving re- lationship with my Creator. And then there is another part of me: the nefesh ha’bahami. This part is the same living substance that occupies every animal in the world. It is made up of pure drives and instincts. It has no wisdom; it oper- ates out of passions, appetites, and hun- gers. And it cares about nothing other than fi lling those hungers. And so, the human is comprised of

In the article published in last week’s edition of the Queens Jewish Link, we presented some important background material that would be helpful in understanding the basics of the laws of Sh’mitah, the amazing yir’as shamayim that is displayed by those who keep it strictly, and the reports of the miracles that have been experienced by those who do. At the same time, we noted that, given the reality that most of the country does not (yet) keep Sh’mitah strictly, there are three approaches that are used within the observant community to attempt to live within the halachah regarding Sh’mitah. In this article we will describe what they are, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. (The article in its entirety can be found on my blog at www.libibamizrach.blogspot.com.) 1. his past week, the eighth grade students of the Yeshiva of Central TQueens visited Ellis Island and the 9/11 Memorial. The students sailed past the Statue of Liberty on a beautiful ferry ride, took a tour of the Ellis Island Museum, and learned about the history of the island, the gateway for many of their ancestors to America. They then headed to the 9/11 Memo- rial where the students took parchment paper and etched the names of particu- lar victims that they had spent time re- searching, ending the day with a tour of lower Manhattan. Another big event this week was Elec- tion Day. The YCQ Library displayed its own voting box with selections placed by Kindergarten through Grade Four on Favorite Book Characters, Book Series, and Fiction Book Genres. The results of our exciting book-friendly election will be determined next week and displayed on the bulletin board for all to see. The Junior High School students also had a taste of the political process during campaigning, speeches, and actual elec- tions for student government. The stu- dents each stood in their private booths to vote for their YCQ student government. That article landed on the front page and I received plenty of feedback, most of which was posi- tive. The response to my article, written by Rabbi Schonfeld, also made the front page. This reminded me of the comment that people complain of negative ads in a political campaign, yet these ads are ef- fective because people consider them. On the other hand, positive ads have little in- fl uence. We see the same reaction here. People condemn those criticizing others, yet that is what interests them - while a positive story is ignored. I have to thank Rabbi Schonfeld for not censoring my article. A lesser person would have found a way to stop publica- tion of an article they did not agree with. I also want to thank Rabbi Schonfeld for the nice comments he said about me, and his admissions to the validity of certain ar- guments I raised. I do not think the other organization could have had a better ad- vocate for their position. When I wrote my article about the other organization, I deliberately did not mention the name because it was more important to address the ideas that were expressed in the ad and not who was mak- ing the statement. Those who signed the letter are not alone in their belief. There- fore, I wanted to discuss the broader issue instead of making it a referendum on any particular organization. I was also wary of mentioning the organization because then it would be looked at as a fi ght be- tween that organization and the QJCC. Unfortunately, there are individuals who will see it that way. QJCC has been co-sponsors with that organization and Chazaq for various events – including one on the Sunday after my article was writ- ten – and plans to continue to do so. Rabbi Schonfeld is correct that general- ly, frum Jews have greater expenses than their non-frum brethren. Yeshivah tuition is high and is a burden for many people. The tuition crisis needs to be addressed.

With the security of America being threatened more than ever, the president’s downsiz- ing of America’s Armed Forces has also made the American people more afraid than ever.
