News Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2016 PILGRIMAGE TO WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016 Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2016 World Youth Day is an international meeting of young people with the pope, which takes place every 2-3 years. This year’s WYD, its 31st edition, will take place in Krakow, Poland, home country of the founder of the event, Pope St. John Paul II. Primarily, the event serves as an opportunity for the youth to personally encounter Jesus Christ, an encounter which calls to conversion and love, to community and growth, to building a better world around them. Join our pilgrims as they meet Pope Francis: click here for details of live broadcasts. 25/07/16: Our pilgrims set off for Krakow In the early hours of Monday, 25th July, fifty young adults from across the Diocese of Dromore , accompanied by Bishop McAreavey, Fr. EWTN will broadcast live from Poland throughout this week. You can watch EWTN’s live coverage on Sky TV, Freesat and online by clicking here. You can view the full schedule by clicking here. We’ve made this quick guide to the highlights: Opening Ceremony Watch live on EWTN at 16:00 on Tuesday, July 26th WYD Kraków will officially begin with the Opening Ceremony, the highlight of which will be Holy Mass celebrated by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, longtime personal secretary and friend of Pope Saint John Paul II. Papal Welcoming Ceremony Watch live on EWTN at 16:00 on Thursday, July 28th Pope Francis will deliver his first speech in Poland. Around 600,000 young people are expected to be in attendance. Way of The Cross Watch live on EWTN at 16:30 Friday, July 29th Young representatives will carry the WYD cross in a procession, as the Holy Father contemplates Jesus’s Passion and death through the lens of the works of mercy. The meditations will address challenges young people face throughout the world today, including the persecuted Church. Vigil with the Holy Father Watch live on EWTN at 18:00 Saturday, July 30th Typically, the most personal moment for WYD participants is the Vigil with the Holy Father. It is an intense time of prayer and fervent joyful encounter with Christ. The main idea behind the Vigil is the theme “The Road to Jesus” – that is, the road to Mercy. The Vigil is an opportunity for youth to encounter Christ, Mercy Itself, and thereby become apostles of mercy in the footsteps of the saints who heralded that same message before them – St. Faustina and Pope Saint John Paul II. Closing Mass Watch live on EWTN at 08:15 on Sunday, July 31st The last main event is the closing Mass celebrated by the Holy Father. It is the culmination of all WYD events. During the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the pope sends the youth out to the whole world. This sending out will strengthen them, so that they may consistently apply the spirit and message of WYD to their daily lives, and share it with their families and communities worldwide. At the end of the Mass, during the Angelus, Pope Francis will announce the place and date of the next WYD. .

OR, FOUR MEN IN A BATEAU (213 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Natasha Levinson, Ph. D. Dozens of academic studies over the course of the past four or five decades have shown empirically that Catholic schools, according to a wide array of standards and measures, are the best schools at producing good American citizens. This dissertation proposes that this is so is partly because the schools are infused with the Catholic ethos (also called the Catholic Imagination or the Analogical Imagination) and its approach to the world in general. A large part of this ethos is based upon Catholic Anthropology, the Church’s teaching about the nature of the human person and his or her relationship to other people, to Society, to the State, and to God.

Ev- ery day of the week Rosie and his crew pick up food donated by local grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants and deliver it to the St. Vin- cent de Paul Dining Room, where it is used to feed hundreds of poor and needy in the Baton Rouge area. “It’s God’s work, it’s not mine. God said to take care of his people, to feed them, clothe them and nurse them,” Martina said. So almost every day of his life, Martina can be found in his blue pick up truck, piled high with produce, bread and anything else he can get to help the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen. “I’m trying to do my tiny part. What I’m do- ing I am doing from the bottom of my heart,” he said. When Martina is not delivering food, he is seeking donations from new sources or coor- dinating grocery pickup with his volunteers, mostly retired people willing to help. 90-year-old Rosie Martina uses his pickup truck to deliver donated grocery items to the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room supervisor where they are used to feed the hungry of the Baton Rouge area.

  • 1 Text of Addresses by Pope Francis During World Youth Day 2016 27
Text of addresses by Pope Francis during World Youth Day 2016 27 July 2016 - Wawel Meeting with the Authorities, the Civil Society and Diplomatic Corps Mr President, Honourable Authorities, Distinguished Members of the Diplomatic Corps, University Rectors, Ladies and Gentlemen, I offer a respectful greeting to His Excellency the President, and I thank him for his gracious welcome and kind words. I am pleased to greet the distinguished members of Government and Parliament, the University Rectors, the regional and municipal Authorities, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps and the other authorities present. This is my first visit to central-eastern Europe and I am happy to begin with Poland, the homeland of the unforgettable Saint John Paul II, originator and promoter of the World Youth Days. Pope John Paul liked to speak of a Europe that breathes with two lungs. The ideal of a new European humanism is inspired by the creative and coordinated breathing of these two lungs, together with the shared civilization that has its deepest roots in Christianity. Memory is the hallmark of the Polish people. I was always impressed by Pope John Paul’s vivid sense of history. Whenever he spoke about a people, he started from its history, in order to bring out its wealth of humanity and spirituality. A consciousness of one’s own identity, free of any pretensions to superiority, is indispensable for establishing a national community on the foundation of its human, social, political, economic and religious heritage, and thus inspiring social life and culture in a spirit of constant fidelity to tradition and, at the same time, openness to renewal and the future.

A.M.D.G. World Youth Day Convocation Friday August 26, 2016 Good Morning Good Morning For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Shane Eilers, and I’m a senior here at Jesuit. Three weeks ago today, a group of over 100 of your fellow students and faculty, including myself, returned to Tampa from our 17 day pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Europe. This fantastic event is held every three years by the Pope, who calls young Catholics from all over the world to partake in a pilgrimage to a particular country. World Youth Day 2016 was held in Krakow, Poland, the place where St. John Paul II had grown up and been bishop before becoming Pope. I can think of many different highlights from World Youth Day: going to mass every day, walking up to 15 miles in one day, and staying with a Polish family where we had to use Google Translate to communicate with them, and it was the greatest time of my life. Some went because they wanted to grow closer to God, some went because they wanted to go on an amazing vacation to three of the world’s most historic and beautiful countries, and some perhaps they knew that their friends were going. Whatever the case, I think it’s easy to say that we all strengthened our faith on this pilgrimage in some way. Personally, my faith grew the most in Rome. As soon as we enter Jesuit, we are taught about the history of the Church, and all of the amazing saints who have lived throughout the ages, including the basilicas where they are buried.

august 2016 CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN ISSUE 222 | AUGUST 2016 ABLETcdd.org.nz World Youth Day In July 2016, the Polish city of Krakow hosted World Youth Day (WYD). About two million young people from all over the world visited the city on the Vistula River to hear and see Pope Francis. Pope Francis chose the city of Krakow for its strong ties with Saint John Paul II. The Polish pope was not only closely connected to Krakow throughout his life as a priest, he also initiated World Youth Day. The first such meeting took place in Rome in 1985. Since then, it has taken place every two or three years in various places around the globe. CONTINUED ON PAGE FOUR the tablet Celebrations of the 800 Jubilee of the Dominican Family were held throughout the diocese on and about the feast day of St Dominic, 3 August. The celebrations coincided with many occurring throughout the world in recognition of the 800th Jubilee Year of the Order of Preachers – The Dominicans, founded by St Dominic de Guzman in France in 1206. Dunedin, Oamaru, Queenstown and Invercargill held special Masses involving schools with a Dominican foundation or tradition. The charism of the Dominican Sisters, who were associated with many schools throughout the diocese, is expressed strongly in the schools, now staffed by lay teachers. In Southland, Over 1500 students joined with dignitaries and the community on Monday 8 August to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Dominicans. Students from the Catholic schools of St Teresa’s, Bluff, St Joseph’s, Invercargill, St Patrick’s, Georgetown, St Theresa’s, Invercargill, and Verdon College participated in a Mass led by Bishop Colin Campbell.
