CANADIAN MARITIMES 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 SMART Canadian Maritimes Caravan 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 Wagon Masters: Carl and Gwen Hopper Assistant Wagon Masters: Mark and Linda Avey The 2016 Canadian Maritimes Caravan started and ended in Hermon, Maine, and covered over 3,000 miles in the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. We started the trip with 19 rigs but unfortunately lost one in Monc- ton, New Brunswick ,due to an accident. No one was seriously injured, but we had to continue on with only 18 rigs. Some of the highlights of this trip included the Bay of Fundy with 25-foot tides, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, rides on the Bluenose II and Amoeba sailing vessels, whale watching tours, and some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in the world. Some of our group even took a day trip to Labrador, while others sailed out of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, to view icebergs and whales. We enjoyed many caravan-sponsored dinners with lots of lobster and other seafood. This was an amazing trip which was made even more enjoyable by the outstanding people who traveled with us. Many thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make this a truly memorable trip. PROVINCE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR DEPARTMENT OF MINES AND ENERGY MINERAL DEVELOPMENT DIVISION REPORT 74-2 LIMESTONE RESOURCES OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR by JOHN R. DeGRACE ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND 1974 CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE TABLE OF CONTENTS Accompanying maps Map 1, Map 2 and Map 3 can be viewed by clicking on each map number PUBLISHER'S NOTE Report 74-2, Limestone Resources of Newfoundland and Labrador by John R. DeGrace, being the only comprehensive study of the limestone resources of the province to date, is being reissued to provide the nec- essary background information to facilitate limestone exploration activities in the province. However, the format of the reissue has been changed from the original to conform to the format presently used by the Geological Survey. The report is being reprinted in its entirety without any updating or corrections whatso- ever; and is being made available only digitally, including on the web. Readers should be aware that later reviews of the geology of the areas covered in Report 74-2 are those by Hibbard (1983), King (1988), Knight and James (1988), Smyth and Schillereff (1982), Stouge (1983a,b), and Knight (1983). Details concerning the economic potential of the limestone resources themselves, also have been updated in the interim. The Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy began a reassess- ment of Newfoundland marble resources in 1985, the objective of which was to determine their industrial potential as filler and dimension stone. Significant reassessments of some of the old deposits were made and new deposits of high-purity, white marble were delineated by diamond drilling.

IN THE NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR COLLECTION Spring 2020 [1] Brigus: Past Glory, Present Splendor by John Northway Leamon This is a comprehensive history of Brigus, a small fishing community located in Conception Bay, which dates back to around 1612, when John Guy sold half of the harbour to the Sprack- lin family. Located in a sheltered bay, Brigus has been home to many fishermen and was a strategic location in early times. Seafaring, fishing, shipbuilding, sealing, and Arctic exploration were among the primary occupations of the residents of Brigus during the seventeenth, eight- eenth, and nineteenth centuries. Brigus was home to the world-famous Captain Robert “Bob” Abram Bartlett and is the location of his residence, Hawthorne Cottage, now a National Histor- ic Site of Canada. There were many other “Arctic Heroes” who came from this historic town, including Captain William Munden, who built the schooner Four Brothers, the first 100-ton schooner in Newfoundland, in 1819. This book is the result of a deep personal commitment on the part of the author and the kind- ness of many who allowed insight into certain, often pertinent facts relating to their own family history. Publisher: Flanker Press Pub Date: 2019 Also available as an ebook. Death in Number Two Shaft: The Underwater Exploration of Newfoundland’s Bell Island Mine by Steve Lewis In 2007, one of a team of expert cave divers died in strange circumstances while explor- ing Bell Island's flooded Iron-ore Mine.
