THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

Over the past seventeen years this format has grown leaps and bounds and is very keenly watched by all stakeholders involved with the game. The popularity and the growth of T20 has led to cricket boards taking this format with uttermost seriousness and every major cricket playing nation has its own international team and domestic league. Over the past seventeen years the strategies involved in succeeding in this format have also evolved and teams at the international, franchise and domestic level are trying to evolve their playbook to gain a comparative advantage. Seventeen years since T20 cricket started, preparation for matches globally have changed from casual chats in team meetings. For coaches and captains, dossiers of 25 pages are common; these dissect the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, suggest set-plays, which are the optimum ways that a bowler can set up a batsman, and explain the best parts of the ground to target and which end might suit each bowler best This research paper will delve into a potential winning strategy for a T20 side.

Miranda Magpies 2019/20 Yearbook We are greatly indebted to our sponsors and thank them for their continued support throughout the 2019/20 season. In turn, we ask our club members to support each of them. Executive Office Bearers Life Members President Scott Taylor Glen Lord, Flo Foster, Bill Secretary Peter Briscoe Foster, Ken Gardener, Paul Treasurer Paul Easton Soady, Ken Prendergast, Trevor Vice President Mark Easton McGregor, Gordon Johnston, Junior Registrar Gerard Burgess Mark Easton, Mario Senior Registrar Paul Easton Racomelara and Ray Davies. Equipment Officer Shane Murray Clothing Officer Gerard Burgess We are very grateful to Grill’d Miranda for providing our player of the match awards. President’s and Secretary’s Report The 2019/20 season was a complicated one by anyone’s standards. Heatwaves, bushfires and torrential rain led to cancelled training sessions and entire matches, but we just managed to scrape in finals games literally days before the COVID shutdown, so I suppose we can say we were lucky. With the committee now seasoned veterans of club management, having been in the gig for all of one season, I feel like we’re slowly managing to keep the ship on course with a little more consistency. But honestly, we’re probably responsible for all of 1% of the clubs success. The absolute vast majority of credit for the successful season goes to the volunteer coaches, managers, scorers, yearbook collaborators (thanks Janelle!), as well as parents and most importantly the players themselves. A positive start to the season is always a good thing, and a gain of 20 players to the club from last season was an excellent way to kick it off.

  • Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B
Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics, Vol (14-1) Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B. W. Manage*, Stephen M. Scariano and Cecil R. Hallum Sam Houston State University Huntsville, Texas, USA 77341 Corresponding Author (Email: [email protected]) Received: 13 February 2013 / Revised: 15 May 2013 ABSTRACT Performance analysis of cricket players is always an intricate task due to the correlated nature of the variables used to quantify contributions to the team. Lack of transparency of current methods, probably due to commercial confidentiality, creates a necessity for new and lucent evaluative methods. Here, we present a simple, yet straightforward, method for analyzing the performance of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 players that can be easily adapted to other team sports. Keywords: Cricket, Principal Component Analysis, Ranking Methods. 1. Introduction Quantifying individual player contributions to a team is an important yet difficult task in all team sports. Usually, there are several indicators available to measure player performances, which are based on different aspects of their contributions to the team. Unfortunately these indicators are mostly related to each other in a manner that oftentimes causes difficulty in constructing an overall performance measure. Our idea is to use a tool acquired from multivariate statistical analysis and apply it directly to T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 data. In this method, the first principal component is used to rank batsmen and bowlers. The technique is simple and can be directly applied to the type of correlated data routinely found in team sports such as cricket. Cricket administrators and sports analysts can use this amenable method to quantify players’ contribution, which could lead to a ranking structure based on their performances.

  • Sussex Sharks Vs Glamorgan Vitality Blast – South Group the 1St Central County Ground, Hove Tuesday 6Th August
Sussex Sharks vs Glamorgan Vitality Blast – South Group The 1st Central County Ground, Hove Tuesday 6th August Sussex Sharks moved to the top of the Vitality Blast South Group after thrashing Glamorgan by nine wickets at The 1st Central County Ground. Sussex’s fifth win out of six – they also tied against Surrey – moved last year’s beaten finalists above Kent Spitfires and they were always in control against a Glamorgan side still looking for their first win of the campaign. After they restricted Glamorgan, who won the toss, to 146 for 9, openers Luke Wright and Phil Salt launched the reply with a withering assault which brought 130 in 12 overs, Sussex’s fourth highest partnership in the format and their biggest against Glamorgan. The pair rattled along at more than ten an over from the start, matching each other shot for shot against a toothless Glamorgan attack which lacked variety compared to Sussex. Salt reached his 50 with a six into the top tier of the pavilion off Andrew Salter and the off-spinner was hit for boundaries off the next two deliveries. Salt won the game off fifth ball of the 13th over with an upper cut over third man which brought him his eighth boundary, he also hit three sixes as he finished on 78 not out from 42 balls – his third half-century of this season’s competition. It looked as if the Sussex pair might win the game on their own but Wright fell to a superb diving catch in the 13th over by wicketkeeper Chris Cooke after making 56 off 35 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.
