I Interest in biographies of stars of the screen has al ways been at high pitch, so, in offering these concise his tories the thought aimed at by the editors was not literary achievement, but only a desire to present to the Motion Picture Enthusiast a short but interesting resume of the careers of the screen’s most popular players, rather than a detailed story. It is the editors’ earnest hope that this volume, which is a forerunner of a series of motion picture publications, meets with the approval of the Motion Picture “ Fan” to whom it is dedicated. Loechle ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii Acknowledgments I am indebted to many people for the help and encouragement they have given me during the long duration of this project. From academic and financial to editorial and emotional, I was never lacking in support. I am truly thankful, not to mention lucky. Sarah Burns, my advisor and mentor, supported my ideas, cheered my successes, and patiently edited and helped me to revise my failures. I also owe her thanks for encouraging me to pursue an unorthodox topic. From the moment pirates came up during one of our meetings in the spring of 2005, I was hooked. She knew it, and she continuously suggested ways to expand the idea first into an independent study, and then into this dissertation. My dissertation committee – Janet Kennedy, Patrick McNaughton, and Beverly Stoeltje – likewise deserves my thanks for their mentoring and enthusiasm. Other scholars have graciously shared with me their knowledge and input along the way. David M. Lubin read a version of my third chapter and gave me helpful advice, opening up to me new ways of thinking about Howard Pyle in particular.

Collection of American Popular Drama, [Box #, Folder #], Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library Historical Note By the end of the 19th century in America there had developed a fairly large market for playbills and scripts of plays. Theater attendance had increased dramatically through the 19th century and had become progressively more accessible to a wider range of social classes and groups. Not surprisingly, a sort of “play piracy” developed as a consistent problem, particularly since the development of copyright law did not develop extensively until the 20th century.

Notes Introduction 1. Otis Ferguson, “Life Goes to the Pictures,” in Robert Wilson, The Film Criticism of Otis Ferguson (Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1971), 4. 2. Those Who Made It is the latest entry in a select group of comparable interview collections that features Hollywood personnel speaking out about their work behind the camera. One of the earliest was Austin C. Andrew Sarris’s Interviews with Film Directors (1967), an anthology conducted by a variety of interviewers; Leonard Maltin’s Behind the Camera (1971), featuring five interviews with cinema- tographers Hal Mohr, Conrad Hall, Hal Rosson, Lucien Ballard, and Arthur Miller; Kevin Brownlow’s three volumes of interviews chronicling the silent era, The Parade’s Gone By, The War the West and the Wilderness, Behind the Mask of Innocence ( 1968–1990); and Joseph McBride’s two- volume Filmmakers on Filmmakingg (1983), derived from a series of seminars conducted by the American Film Institute. My own previous contribution to this series is my edited volume, Introduction to the Photoplay (1977), an annotated collection of Hollywood n otables— including pro- ducer Irving Thalberg, art director William Cameron Menzies, scriptwriter Clara Beranger— speaking out at a seminar at USC in 1929 on topics relating to the dawn of sound. All, save Brownlow’s Parade’s Gone By, are long out of print. 3. Jean- Luc Godard, Introduction a une veritable histoire du cinema (Paris: Albatros, 1980), 100. 4. Florida Vertical File Cities and Towns Vertical File Gainesville Vertical File Trevor "Tommy" Bale epitomized the versatile "circus man" who "did it all" in the center ring and behind the scenes. Noted as one of the world's greatest tiger trainers, Bale was also known as a gifted clown, acrobat, trick bicyclist, vaudevillian and ringmaster. Bale's unpublished and unedited autobiographical manuscript ( written under the guidance of famed ghostwriter and editor Walter B. Gibson - creator of THE SHADOW), paints an exciting picture of the early 20th century European vaudeville and circus circuits. Bale vividly describes the triumphs, glory, pain and agony of life on the road, culminating in Bale's headlining contract with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus in the mid 1950s. The TREVOR "TOMMY" BALE COLLECTION promises three rings (and more) full of circus lore. The John W.
