Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. Accepted: May 12, 2006) ABSTRACT Representatives of the family Cactaceae are characterized by a wide range of phyllotaxis. To assess the origin of this diversity, early stages of phyllotactic pattern formation were examined in seedlings. The analysis of the se- quence of areole initiation revealed intertribal differences. In seedlings from the Trichocereeae (Gymnocalycium, Rebutia) and Notocacteae (Parodia) tribes, two opposite cotyledonal areoles developed as the first elements of a pattern. Usually, next pair of areoles was initiated perpendicularly to cotyledonal areoles, starting the decussate pattern. This pattern was subsequently transformed into bijugate or into simple spiral phyllotaxis. In seedlings from the Cacteae tribe (Mammillaria and Thelocactus), cotyledonal areoles were never observed and the first are- oles always appeared in the space between cotyledons. It was either areole pair (mainly in Mammillaria), starting a decussate pattern, or a single areole (mainly in Thelocactus) quickly followed by areoles spirally arranged, usu- ally in accordance with the main Fibonacci phyllotaxis. Differences in the initial stages of pattern formation do not fully explain the phyllotaxis diversity in mature cacti. Only two, the most common phyllotactic patterns occurred in the early development of studied seedlings, i.e. the main Fibonacci and the decussate pattern. -

Poole Wildlife Diversity Program, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, Texas 78744, U.S.A. Abstract: Amistad National Recreation Area is a 23,186 ha property in Val Verde County, Texas. A floral inventory was conducted in 2003–2004, producing a checklist of 699 taxa with 99 infraspecific taxa, 686 species, 402 genera, and 106 families. There are 651 native taxa and 48 introduced. No federally or state listed plants were documented. Seventeen species of conservation concern were verified within the park. Thirteen taxa endemic to Texas were recorded. Plant communities were also noted and compared to those previously reported for the site. INTRODUCTION The aim of ‘CITES and Cacti: a user’s guide’ is to provide a ‘user friendly’ tool for training those who wish to know about CITES and its application to the cactus family. This guide has expanded speaker’s notes for many of the PowerPoint slides included to provide a comprehensive coverage of particular topics. Most importantly, based on feedback from users of previous guides we have printed the guide in full colour and in larger format. We hope that this pack will allow users to tailor-make their own presentation on CITES and cacti and also form a concise but comprehensive reference. Please use this training tool and forward your comments to us so we can revise future editions to suit your needs. HOW TO USE THIS PACK This pack consists of slides and speaker’s notes for a presentation on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Divided into five separate topic areas (Introduction to Cacti, Appendix I Cacti, Appendix II Cacti, Non-CITES Cacti and Implementing CITES for Cacti), it can be used and adapted according to the background, interests and needs of your audience. The slides have been drafted in general terms with the hope that they will remain current, and therefore of use, for the foreseeable future. Suggested speaker’s notes accompany each slide. These notes are more specific than the slides and reflect information current as of July 2012. We have written these for speakers to use verbatim, providing a useful starting point from which you can tailor the slides, and accompanying speaker’s notes, to reflect the specific needs of your audience, the length of the presentation and your own personal style.
