D.) in "Silviculture" with general grade "MAGNA CUM LAUDE" (very good with distinction). Mar. '79 – Mar. '80: Annual contract with the Swedish silviculture company 1 "Silviconsult Ltd". I was responsible for the coordination and reporting of forest technical projects for the wider Mediterranean and North-African regions. Mar. '80 – May '83: Employed at the Agricultural Coop of Grevena with main responsibility the planning and organization of Forest Coop(s) and the planning, foundation, and management of the cooperative Forest Wood Industry (MDF) in Grevena. One year detachment to the Panhellenic Confederation of Agricultural Coop (ΠΑΣΕΓΕΣ) in Athens to enable the participation to various working groups of the Ministry of Agriculture related to the forest and cooperative development of the country (Five-year program for the development of the Greek Silviculture, Law on cooperatives, cooperative wood industries, etc.). May '83 – Oct. '85: Employed at the Institute for Forest Research in Thessaloniki as a permanent employee of the Ministry of Agriculture. As a prime researcher at the Department of Silviculture and Forest Genetics I have worked on the preparation, planning and installation of two new research project of the Department of Silviculture. Apart from the research activities I have participated during this period in various working groups of the Ministry of Agriculture related to the foundation of the Cooperative Wood Industries of Grevena, Evritania and Epirus as well as in the preparation of a strategic plan for the development of Greek Silviculture and a feasibility study for the research staff needed for the Ministry of Agriculture. Moreover, I participated as a special researched in various national representations of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture to other countries (Sweden, Soviet Union, Bulgaria). Oct. '85 – today: Professor at the Department of Forestry, Technical Educational Institute (TEI) of Larissa, Brach of Karditsa with main responsibility the fields of Silviculture and Forest Ecology. Upon assumption of my duties at the Department I became the Department Head (08/11/1985), and continued as the Head for two more two-year terms (17/12/86 & 23/05/88), acting at the same time as the Dean of the Branch of Karditsa of TEI Larisas. Apart from my administrative duties I was and still be responsible for the courses of Forestry I and II, for which dedicated lecture notes have been prepared. Lecture notes have been prepared as well for the courses of Introduction to Silviculture (in cooperation) and Forest project and Cooperative Forestry which I taught and still teach for many semesters (Introduction to Silviculture). I also have the responsibility of the elective course “City Forestry”. Moreover I have a rich research experience through the planning, organisation and completion of five research programs, while I still retain strong ties with the Institute for Forestry Research in Thessaloniki through various research programs. Being a member of the Research Committee of TEI Larissa I 2 am responsible since 1990 of the Inter-University Cooperative and Exchange Program ERASMUS (today SOKRATES), to which 46 Greek and 36 foreign students have participated. With Erasmus scholarships I have visited the relative Departments of Silviculture in Germany, Denmark, France, Slovenia and Finland in order to exchange research and teaching experiences as well as to establish closer cooperation. From 1996 to 1999 I participated as a member of the Greek delegation to actions E3 and E4 of the EU program COST. During the entire duration of my employment at the Department of Forestry in Karditsa I have established close cooperation with local authorities and stakeholders and particularly with the City of Karditsa and the Development Agency of Karditsa. I act as their scientific expert and councillor on issues regarding forests, green works and the development of mountainous areas. Under my involvement in the latter, two Life research programs have been cocnducted. During the Second Framework Support Program of the EU I was responsible for the organization and administration of the project ΕΠΕΑΕΚ 3.1.a “Improvement of the Curriculum of the Departments of Silviculture of TEI Larisas and Lamias with a total budget of 642.000 € for the period 1997-2000. During the last five years I work together with the Department of Biology of the University of Athens in research projects in the frame of the Life (Lake Plastiras region) and Natura 2000 (South and Central Greece) programs. Similarly, the Greek team consisted of five researchers participating in the HNV-link program. The purpose of the visit was: (a) to inform on innovations such as GPS-tracking, Terra Thessalia, Participatory Guarantee System and (b) to visit livestock holdings in order the exchanging ideas among the breeders. 13/7/2018 On the arrival of the group from Bulgaria, a brief presentation of the LA-Thessaly profile was made. The economic and demographic situation of the region was analyzed. Special mention was made of the number and type of livestock farms, the problems and the appearing perspectives. At the same time, the innovations Terra Thessalia and the Participatory Guarantee System were presented, explaining the purpose and the advantages offered to the breeders and cheesemakers from the establishment and operation of these specific structures 14/7/2018 During the second day there were field visits to two producers in a mountain community within LA- Thessaly. The first producer has a goat extensive livestock farm. The team visited the stable as well as the pastures where the animals graze. Also, a GPS-tracking demonstration was conducted. The GPS system was mounted in a goat and with a computer the movement of the animal was being monitored in real time.

The purpose of this study is to comment and provide some information on the basin management under the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EU. Water quality and quantity of is crucial for the human and the natural environment. It represents also the most abundant element on earth. However, in the recent years there has been an uncontrollable environmental degradation and pollution of both surface and ground water. Humans, in order to facilitate their living conditions, often construct technical infrastructure within the natural environment which sometimes may cause huge and irreversible ecological damage. For this, any interference within the framework of the natural environment should ensure biodiversity and sustainability. Although the Plastira’s Lake is a large technical intervention, it has been fully assimilated into the natural environment. In the present study the social, historical and cultural conditions of the area are analysed and the characteristics of biotic and environmental problems are recorded. SARGENTIS Department of Water Resources, National Technical University of Athens, 5, Iroon Polytechniou, 15780, Zografou, Athens, Greece e-mail: [email protected] EXTENDED SUMMARY The Plastiras dam was constructed in the late 1950s mainly for electric power production, but it has also partially covered irrigation needs and water supply of the plain of Thessaly. Later, the site has been designated as an environment conservation zone because of ecological and landscape values, while tourist activities have been developed around the reservoir. Irrigation of agricultural land, hydroelectric production, drinking water supply, tourism, ecosystem water quality and scenery conservation have evidently been conflicting targets for many years. Good management would require a multi-criteria decision making. Historical data show that the irregular water release has resulted in a great annual fluctuation of the reservoir water level. This situation could be improved by a rational management of abstractions. Apparently, higher release leads simultaneously to more power production and to irrigation of a larger agricultural land. Moreover, demands for electricity and for irrigation are partially competing to each other, due to different optimal time schedules of releases. On the other hand, higher water release leads to lower water level in the reservoir and, therefore, it decreases the beauty of the scenery and deteriorates the trophic state of the lake. Such degradation affects the tourist potential as well as the quality of drinking water supplied by the reservoir. A multi-criteria approach uses different scenarios for the minimum permissible water level of the reservoir, if a constant annual release is applied.

For a water-scarce area it can be attractive to adopt a policy of producing products with relatively low water footprint. The size and characteristics of water footprint (W.F.) vary significantly across animal types and it is also determined by the production system applied. The main objective of the current study is to assess the volumes of livestock’s water footprint in the Regional Unit of Karditsa (Greece). More specifically, this study aims to estimate the quantity and quality effects on water resources in the study area through the assessment of green, blue and grey water footprint of sheep and goat breeding and their corresponding products. For this purpose, the factors taken into account were: the amount of food and water consumed by the animals and based on the feed conversion efficiency, the production system applied (semi- intensive), the three water footprint dimensions for growing the crops used as animal feed and the livestock waste resulting in the pollution of water resources.

SARGENTIS Selected from papers presented in 9th *to whom all correspondence should be addressed International Conference on Environmental e-mail: [email protected] Science and Technology (9CEST2005) 1-3 September 2005, Rhodes island, Greece ABSTRACT The Plastiras dam was constructed in the late 1950s mainly for electric power production, but it has also partially covered irrigation needs and water supply of the plain of Thessaly. Later, the site has been designated as an environment conservation zone because of ecological and landscape values, while tourist activities have been developed around the reservoir. Irrigation of agricultural land, hydroelectric production, drinking water supply, tourism, ecosystem water quality and scenery conservation have evidently been conflicting targets for many years. Good management would require a multi-criteria decision making. Historical data show that the irregular water release has resulted in a great annual fluctuation of the reservoir water level. This situation could be improved by a rational management of abstractions. Apparently, higher release leads simultaneously to more power production and to irrigation of a larger agricultural land. Moreover, demands for electricity and for irrigation are partially competing to each other, due to different optimal time schedules of releases. On the other hand, higher water release leads to lower water level in the reservoir and, therefore, it decreases the beauty of the scenery and deteriorates the trophic state of the lake.

What remains unexamined and undervalued in the Greek landscape, are the extreme and abandoned limits of the small non- metropolitan regional areas. At the limits of Greek cities, we can identify a great dispersion, a marginal instability, states of transition and deposition. The architectural and planning policies of the Greek state, through the modernistic period, have set a significant number of traces on the rural part of the country. These traces on the countryside, can only be recorded and historically analysed through systematic approach and subjective mapping, such as the methodology of oral history promotes. The landscape of the lowlands of Thessaly is selected as a paradigm of a changing reality, where one can see and recognize a number of exemplary transformations and specificities. The resettlement phenomenon of the mountain populations in Karditsa region, which was affected by the reclamation infrastructure of the 1960s (construction of Megdova dam), is the springboard for a dispersion of new residential settlements in the lowlands. This relocation process had a significant impact on the transformation of the rural landscape of Thessaly, as well as on the social life of the countryside. The architectural and historical research is motivated from the current ruin condition of these promising residential settlements on the countryside of Thessaly and systematically examines the policies that lead from the construction of Megdova dam to these abandoned traces on the landscape.
