Beuhold A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree ot MASTER OF SCIENCE ln Fishery Management UTAH STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE Logan, Utah 1954 ABSTRACT Previous literature indicates the opercular bone as a . useful t ool for the determination of age and growth of fish. The reliability and validity _o f this method is tested for two populations of Utah chub. Age and growth are calculated for 222 Utah chub collected from Panguitch Lake and 212 Utah chub collected from Navajo Lake, southern Utah, in 1952-1953 from both scales and opercular bones. -
The Science Behind Volcanoes
The Science Behind Volcanoes A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from the magma chamber below the surface. Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust in the interiors of plates, e.g., in the East African Rift, the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "Plate hypothesis" volcanism. Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so- called "hotspots", for example Hawaii, are postulated to arise from upwelling diapirs with magma from the core–mantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth. Erupting volcanoes can pose many hazards, not only in the immediate vicinity of the eruption. Volcanic ash can be a threat to aircraft, in particular those with jet engines where ash particles can be melted by the high operating temperature. Large eruptions can affect temperature as ash and droplets of sulfuric acid obscure the sun and cool the Earth's lower atmosphere or troposphere; however, they also absorb heat radiated up from the Earth, thereby warming the stratosphere. -

KJ' ,\ RECORD OF DECISION 6~\ based on the FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT for the BRIAN HEAD RECOVERY PROJECT Cedar City Ranger District USDA Forest Service Dixie National Forest Iron County, Utah I. INTRODUCTION A. Proposed Action The Forest Service proposes timber harvest to reduce the impacts of the spruce bark beetle in the Brian Head area of the Cedar City Ranger District, Dixie National Forest, Iron County, Utah. The project area is located 11 miles east of Cedar City, Utah. Implementation of harvest activities would be scheduled to begin as early as the fall of 1995 in the Brian Head Ski Resort area. Areas outside of the Brian Head Ski area would be scheduled to begin in the summer of 1995. The Proposed Action would salvage harvest dead and dying Englemann spruce, and remove selected green spruce using sanitation harvest on 878 acres. A combination of helicopter and tractor yarding systems would be used to remove the trees. Approximately 1.2 miles of road would be constructed, 0.25 miles of Forest Road 304 would be realligned, 1.7 miles would be reconstructed and 4.1 miles of existing road would require prehaul maintenance. Followup treatments including salvage and/or on-site destruction would continue for 1-5 years following the initial treatment. Fuels reduction work is scheduled to reduce wildfire risk and minimize impacts in visually sensitive areas. Reforestation activities are scheduled for 95 acres in areas not expected to meet full stocking levels. Application of insecticide is scheduled in the Upper Bear Flat area and within the Brian Head Ski Resort area to protect selected spruce trees from insect damage. -

The American Pika in Southern Utah
November 2017 NR/Wildlife/2017-02pr The American Pika in Southern Utah Ethan Hammer and Nicki Frey Pikas (pronounced ‘pie-ka’ in the U.S.) are the smallest lagomorphs - members of the rabbit and hare family (Peri, 2012). While over 20 pika species live throughout Central Asia, North America is home to two members of the Ochotona family - the collared pika and the American pika. The collared pika inhabits Alaska and northern Canada; the American pika resides throughout the western United States and southwestern Canada (Smith, 1994). American pikas resemble a cross between a rabbit and a hamster. They have large, rounded ears, no visible tail, and fur on the soles of their feet. Adults are 6 - 8.5” long and weigh about 4 oz. They are social animals, with several species living together in colonies. However, they are territorial of their nests and shelters, frequently making a call such as “eenk” or “ehh-ehh” to tell others where their territory is (Smith, 1994.) Photo Credit: Ethan Hammer. animal in the Western U.S., the yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris). Both animals are active during the day and live in rocky terrain, but marmots are much larger, 18-28” long, weighing 5 – 10 lbs. (Burt & Grossenheider, 1964). American pikas, as with many pika species, live in high elevation (8,000 – 13,500 feet) talus slopes. Talus slopes are mountain sides made of medium and large sized rocks, with little vegetation. -

A HISTORY OF <Kam County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF County Martha Sonntag Bradley Kane County is noted for some of the most beautiful—though often inhospitable—land in Utah and has been home to resourceful humans for thousands of years. It was outside the area of first Mormon settlement and was actually created in the early 1860s before many had moved to the area. After the Black Hawk War, settlers soon moved to favorable locations such as Kanab and Long Valley, establishing towns in the isolated region north of the Arizona Strip with economies based on ranching and timber harvesting. With the improvement of area roads and communications in the twentieth century, more people became aware of the scenic splen dor of the county, and tourism and movie making began to increase, Kanab even be coming known as Utah's Little Hollywood during the heyday of filmmaking. Traditional extractive uses of the land's resources have declined in recent years, but the recent cre ation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante Na tional Monument has brought the promise of increased tourism to the area. It also has sparked opposition from many who had hoped for coal mining development in the region. Issues of control and uses of public lands promise to be debated vigorously as the county enters the new millenium. GREENHALGH PUBLISHED BY UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY INTRODUCTION The gateway to central southern Utah is the town of Kanab, located in Kane County just a few miles north of the Utah-Arizona line. At an elevation of 4973 feet it nestles in an indenture in the Vermillion Cliffs where Kanab Canyon emerges. North of these Vermillion Cliffs, rising like two additional great steps, are the White Cliffs and the Pink Cliffs. These lead to two table lands, the Paunsagunt Plateau of the Bryce Canyon National Park area with its highest point 9105 feet, and to the west, the Markagunt Plateau of the Zion National Park-Cedar Breaks National Monument area. The latter in its higher northern portion is referred to locally as either Cedar Mountain or the Parowan Mountains. The highest point is Brian Head at 11,315 feet, just north of the Cedar Breaks National Monument. North of the Paunsagunt Plateau is the Table Cliff Plateau and then comes the mightiest of all, the Aquarius Plateau. These plateaus are the highest and most extensive in North America. They were the subject of a classic study by Dutton (1880). With reference to the last named he referred to the entire broadly L-shaped tableland which is about 35 miles in length and from 10 to 18 miles in width simply as the Aquarius Plateau.
