The entire Wizarding world had been turned on its collective ear, and any summons from Albus Dumbledore most likely repre- sented a headache he could well do without. The headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry smiled at his Potions master, and gestured for him to be seated. “Sit down, my boy, sit down. I don’t have to ask how you’re doing, you look very fit. How are your lovely sisters?” Snape disposed his long limbs in the chair across the desk from Dumbledore and raised his eyebrows. “My half-sisters are in good health, Headmaster, and they will no doubt shorten my life span by fifty years.” Feeling that the proprieties had been observed, he said, “You implied that it was urgent?” The study door opened and a house-elfentered, 2 3 bearing a tea tray; Minerva McGonagall followed the house- riages and childbearing! It is part parody, part romance, part general drama, and completely A/U. I have followed canon very loosely, drawing some inspiration from the films as well as the books. I have completely ignored the ending of HBP. For the purposes of this story, I needed Dumbledore alive, and so alive he is – at least here! The events of the books are meant to serve only as a framework on which to hang my plot. Events that, in the books, may have taken place over several days or even weeks are compressed into one day, or completely ignored. This is deliberate and I intend no disrespect to the story that JKR is telling. Almost all encounters between Hermione Granger and Severus Snape are the product of my own imagination. I wrote this story in response to a challenge posed on the WIKTT forum by Ladyofthemasque. The Challenge goes like this: Lost in a Book Challenge Offered by Ladyofthemasque Based upon the story “Lost in a (Not So) Good Book” by Bubblebunny (http://ashwinder.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=12466) Here’s the Lost in A Book Challenge: 1. • Design of Roller Coasters
Aalto University School of Engineering Master’s Programme in Building Technology Design of Roller Coasters Master’s Thesis 24.7.2018 Antti Väisänen Aalto University, P.O. BOX 11000, 00076 AALTO www.aalto.fi Abstract of master's thesis Author Antti Väisänen Title of thesis Design of Roller Coasters Master programme Building Technology Code ENG27 Thesis supervisor Vishal Singh Thesis advisor Anssi Tamminen Date 24/07/2018 Number of pages 75 Language English Abstract This thesis combines several years of work experience in amusement industry and a litera- ture review to present general guidelines and principles of what is included in the design and engineering of roller coasters and other guest functions attached to them. Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads.

  • A Critical Examination of Teachers in Harry Potter by Einar Christopher
The Magic of Hogwarts: A Critical Examination of Teachers in Harry Potter by Einar Christopher Wong B.A., Simon Fraser University, 2008. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FUFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACTULY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Children’s Literature) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2014 © Einar Christopher Wong 2014 ii Abstract While there have been many young-adult and children’s novels and stories published that deal with school and teachers, there have been comparatively few studies done that analyze the messages these novels contain about formal classroom education, specifically about teacher characters. As well, the subject of school has been a relatively consistent theme for Hollywood movies and media geared towards teenagers and children, but, like their novel counterparts, analysis has been relatively light. J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series places itself in a very unique position in popular culture as the highest-selling book series and highest-grossing film series of all time; a series that mainly focuses on an education system, albeit for wizards and witches rather than muggles. Nonetheless, this thesis proposes to examine the professors at Hogwarts and to show whether or not Rowling has created a series of complex teacher characters; characters that are usually not a source of complexity in young adult or children’s literature. Additionally, this thesis will also examine how these characters have been adapted from the page to the screen and whether or not the movie versions of these teacher characters have retained any complexity found in Rowling’s novels.

Did you hear that last part, James?” asked Mr. Potter. “Yes.” said James with a shrug of his shoulders. “Well, then, I suppose there’s nothing else for us to tell you. We love you and we will see you at Christmas.” said Mrs. Potter tearfully. “Alright, then, bye Mother, bye Father, I love you both, see you at Christmas!” As he got on to the train, James thought about the friends he would make and the adventures they would go on together. He had been waiting for this moment all his life. ‘I wonder what House I’ll be in,’ James thought, ‘and if my new friends will be in the same House as me.’ He walked around to find an empty compartment. About five minutes after he got settled, a boy with shoulder-length hair walked in. “Hello, I’m Sirius Black, nice to meet you. What’s your name?” “James Potter, pleasure to meet you.” “Would it be okay if I rode in here for the journey to Hogwarts?” asked Sirius. “Oh, yes, I don’t mind.” James said. As they talked, laughed, and got to know each other better, James could tell that he and Sirius would be good friends.

  • A Fiction-Based Religion Within the Harry Potter Fandom

A significant portion of these texts deal with Professor Severus Snape, the stern Potions Master with ambiguous ethics and loyalties. This paper explores a small community of Snape fans who have gone beyond a narrative retelling of the character as constrained by the work of Joanne Katherine Rowling. The ‘Snapewives’ or ‘Snapists’ are women who channel Snape, are engaged in romantic relationships with him, and see him as a vital guide for their daily lives. In this context, Snape is viewed as more than a mere fictional creation. He is seen as a being that extends beyond the Harry Potter texts with Rowling perceived as a flawed interpreter of his supra-textual essence. While a Snape religion may be seen as the extreme end of the Harry Potter fandom, I argue that religions of this nature are not uncommon, unreasonable, or unprecedented. Popular films are a mechanism for communal bonding, individual identity building, and often contain their own metaphysical discourses. Here, I plan to outline the manner in which these elements resolve within extreme Snape fandom so as to propose a nuanced model for the analysis of fandom-inspired religion without the use of unwarranted veracity claims.
