Monographs and Bibliographies in American Music Edited by Michael J. Budds

VOLUME 25: Bound Music, Unbound Women: The Search for an Identity in the Nineteenth Century Petra Meyer-Frazier

$45.00 ( plus shipping/handling) ISBN 978-1-881913-34-4 Paperbound 6 x 9, 241 pp.

Monographs and Bibliographies in American Music is a series of comprehensive and rigorous studies designed to illuminate enduring music of the Americas and significant American composers.

During the nineteenth century the households of advantaged Americans were tempered by a widely accepted parlor culture that informed the construction of gender and so many other related aspects of society. Central to this way of life was a set of expectations and behaviors for the American woman—in fact, an ideal. In spite of dangers and excesses well addressed at the time, the cultivation of musical interests by young women was encouraged and admired. Professor Meyer-Frazier has turned her attention to this subject with a thoughtful study of the sheet music collected by girls during their years of education and courtship. Ray Smith and Mike Pointon

Born in 1905, Bill Russell demonstrated diverse musical interests from an early age. A contemporary of John Cage, Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison, his significance as a percussion composer is well known amongst aficionados. His work as a musicologist of New Orleans jazz music is equally acclaimed. He became the first Curator of the newly formed Tulane Jazz Archives at New Orleans in 1958. He was a major figure in the development of the revival of interest in the music of that City, notably from his recordings of trumpet player Bunk Johnson in the 1940s.This is the first full-length book about Mr. Russell’s life largely ‘in his own words’. The book is based largely on personal interviews conducted with Russell about the diversity of his life’s work, interspersed with views and anecdotes about him from his friends and associates written especially for the book, together with archival material. These sources are woven together to give a portrait of an extremely talented, modest man who forsook an academic career to become a champion of the music and musicians of New Orleans. 2016pp 384pp 253 x 203mm Illus. hb ISBN 9781781791691 £35.00 / $50.00
