Massive Attack came out of eight years of work in sound systems, and had a strong Caribbean identity. It was really awkward. Alain Badiou is undoubtedly the most exciting and influential voice in contemporary French philosophy and one of the most important theorists at work today. He could make his organ just go from barely audible to absolutely take your head off. You played the really wobbly bass stuff, which is the majority of it. And in Gibbons it offered a bleak, twisted and completely novel vision of what a blues singer could be. Utley: I think that's really super cool. The track opens with nearly a full minute of dark, spacious chords ringing out from a Fender Rhodes electric piano through a Fender Twin , with the bass cranked with the onboard tremolo cranked to deliver the pulsing vibe that gives the song its underlying rhythm. You've worked out the weird kind of chords that she had. Continue on UK site. They said that the snare drum sounds like a tin can. In fact, one of the first sounds you hear on the record—that ethereal, Theremin-like lead on "Mysterons"—was actually conjured out of the SH Initially created as an affordable and somewhat simplified alternative to Roland's more advanced synthesizers, the SH has attracted a loyal following since its release in So how did Portishead craft the signature sound of Dummy? People must have told you they use this music for all kinds of situations. Utley: We smoked at least two packs a day. Reverb Gives Your purchases help youth music programs get the gear they need to make music. It's direct to the vein. Homelessness and drugs problems are even bigger issues. We all have got a fairly good living out of music. Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? It's pitched perfectly in terms of emotion. All his music was made because he's a director. It has also weathered the decades better than many of the albums with which it jostled for attention. Utley: It was a super kind of nerdy operation of ever-evolving methods of making this thing hang together but not be so in tune and not so out of tune. Portisheads Dummy Writer Wondering Star is total spleen, dark lyrics and haunting bass. They were puppets, but they had the most amazing spacecrafts and dark music, and they had a full massive orchestral score. A favorite tool in Adrian Utley's arsenal, wah-wah makes several appearances on Dummy. BMPAudio September 12, During his days as a sideman, Utley had the distinct pleasure of playing with Jeff Beck, who let the Portishead guitarist play his '56 Telecaster. But when it came to films, we had a bit of an open policy. I was a musician, and I had nothing but a bass guitar because I'd been playing bass with people making money. It had a warp in it. Being an analog effect, the tremolo is never perfectly in sync with the beat—just another one of the little idiosyncrasies that gives Dummy its signature sound. Once the poor, abused vinyl sounded like something you might find at an estate sale, the crackly, crunchy grooves would then be sampled, programmed into beats, and further processed during mixing. Utley: It was absolutely astonishing when you first put it on. They like their tempos slow, their drums crisp, their keyboards velvety. It doesn't matter that this one's slightly sharp of the other one or is actually in a different key. I was doing press as well as the tour. This album is a classic and more than 20 years after his release, sound is still catchy and surprising. Roland SH Perhaps the most extreme example of Portishead's taboo techniques is Geoff Barrow's inventive approach to sampling. That's the loop. Submit Click anywhere to return to the site. Basically, Beth was singing. Utley: We were really obsessed with the tiny minutiae. Aside from the undeniably excellent songwriting and tasteful musicianship on display, Dummy is primarily an album of texture—something that is fully apparent within the first minute of the record. Utley: It's really kind of soulful. Originally aired on Studio and their affiliates on August 22, Even Portishead themselves made a conscious effort not to retread old ground after the success of Dummy , forcing themselves to come up with new sounds rather than going back to what worked the first time. Some jazzy piano notes interlude give you space to breathe a little. That's the kind of Jaco Pastorius kind of riff with all the harmonics. Your email address will not be published. That's the only bass I had. Of course, there is a moving thing, but I always kind of see Braveheart as a little cheesy. You're not totally aware of them, but if they're not there it makes it sound super clean. Deconstruction and Democracy. Utley: We smoked at least two packs a day. This treatment gives the vocals a distinctly lo-fi sound, as if they were coming out of a public address system—exactly the effect the band was looking for. A heavy dose of EQ provided the final touch: McDonald generously boosted the area around 1kHz, an area most mixers would cut due to its harsh, nasal sound. At least, for me. It was definitely a thing that people would listen to dub and reggae and slower beats really, really loud. So, putting it through a broken amplifier would surely do that or lead us on the way to it. In the hands of Portishead, these samples sound like they were always created to be part of their music. So how did Portishead craft the signature sound of Dummy? It shapes not only our present but also our future. I got to know her quite slowly, really. I had massive anxiety, really. Thank you. Strings seem to be pure and smooth, on contrary the vocals and electric guitar come to make it darker and dirtier. I had mental health issues since I was a kid. To reflect our commitment, we updated our terms and conditions. The unit's famous trunk-rattling bass drum sound is used to great effect on "Pedestal," mingling with the bass to give the track an absolutely massive low-end thump that contrasts perfectly with the brighter edge of the real drums and vocals. Although it's tricky to tell which type of organ is used on each track, one thing's for sure: the rich, smooth timbres of these tonewheel organs are a big part of the album's sound.

They are exemplary of a general class of symbolic notations that musicians use to exchange in- formation about a music piece. This information can range from simple tempo indications such as “allegro” to precise instructions for a performer of the music. Concretely, both keys and chords are timed labels that de- scribe the harmony during certain time intervals, where harmony refers to the way music notes sound together. Chords describe the local harmony, whereas keys offer a more global overview and consequently cover a se- quence of multiple chords. Common to all music notations is that certain characteristics of the mu- sic are described while others are ignored. The adopted level of detail de- pends on the purpose of the intended information exchange. A simple de- scription such as “menuet”, for example, only serves to roughly describe the character of a music piece. Sheet music on the other hand contains precise information about the pitch, discretised information pertaining to timing and limited information about the timbre.

Raja Mohan 21M.775 Prof. DeFrantz From Bronx’s Hip-Hop to Bristol’s Trip-Hop As Tricia Rose describes, the birth of hip-hop occurred in Bronx, a marginalized city, characterized by poverty and congestion, serving as a backdrop for an art form that flourished into an international phenomenon. The city inhabited a black culture suffering from post-war economic effects and was cordoned off from other regions of New York City due to modifications in the highway system, making the people victims of “urban renewal.” (30) Given the opportunity to form new identities in the realm of hip-hop and share their personal accounts and ideologies, similar to traditions in African oral history, these people conceived a movement whose worldwide appeal impacted major events such as the Million Man March. Hip-hop’s enormous influence on the world is undeniable. In the isolated city of Bristol located in England arose a style of music dubbed trip-hop. The origins of trip-hop clearly trace to hip-hop, probably explaining why artists categorized in this genre vehemently oppose to calling their music trip-hop. They argue their music is hip-hop, or perhaps a fresh and original offshoot of hip-hop. Mushroom, a member of the trip-hop band Massive Attack, said, "We called it lover's hip hop. Forget all that trip hop bullshit. There's no difference between what Puffy or Mary J Blige or Common Sense is doing now and what we were doing…” (Bristol Underground Website) Trip-hop can abstractly be defined as music employing hip-hop, soul, dub grooves, jazz samples, and break beat rhythms.
