Skip to Content Search Cal Poly News News California Polytechnic State University Oct. 5, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE EDITORIAL CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 TICKETS: (805) 756-2787 Classic Arthur Miller Play 'The Price' At Cal Poly Oct. 21 SAN LUIS OBISPO -- When speaking of his play, “The Price,” Pulitzer Prize-winner Arthur Miller noted, “Despite my wishes, I could not tamper with something the play and life seemed to be telling me: that we are doomed to perpetuate our illusions because truth was too costly to face” On Friday, October 21 at 8 p.m. in the Spanos Theatre, Cal Poly Arts presents A Noise Within’s production of “The Price,” highlighted by the performance of Len Lesser (“Seinfeld’s” Uncle Leo). The touring production features “…an outstanding ensemble…” (Daily News) and the Los Angeles Times declares “This ‘Price’ is right.” The story takes place in the attic of a New York brownstone, over-stuffed with furniture and memories. Two brothers -- one a retiring police officer, the other a successful surgeon -- struggle to come to terms with the past. Desperate for reconciliation after 20 bitter years but hampered by scarred-over hurt and pride, the brothers grapple with challenges of lives wasted, love destroyed and the unfinished business of the heart. Forgiveness and the power to heal emerge out of the embers of the past and the exploration of different shades of truth in Arthur Miller’s post-war America.

Slide 2: Ask students to answer the questions (as best they can). Slide 3: Review the correct answers. Slide 4: Ask students to again consider the first question from the warm-up: Would you rather have $100 today or $100 one year from today? (Most students will clearly prefer $100 now, although some worry they would spend it too quickly and opt for the later time.) Explain to students that $100 in hand right now is worth more than $100 one year from today for several reasons: 1) Inflation will decrease the value of the $100 during the year, meaning $100 won’t buy as much one year from now, and 2) The $100 could be invested and earning interest during this time, so there is an opportunity cost of foregone interest. (You might want to point out that there is a risk that you might lose money on an investment.) Slide 5: This gives examples of how inflation and interest change the value of money over time. Slide 6: This gives examples of how inflation and interest change the value of money over time. Abstract “The Lonely Nineties” provides a close reading of six popular series on primetime American television in the 1990s, setting their depictions of community within the context of late 20th century problems and developments in civic disengagement. This dissertation examines Seinfeld, N.Y.P.D. Blue, Law & Order, The X-Files, Touched by an Angel, and The Simpsons within their respective genres, revealing what makes nineties television distinctive, and connecting those distinctions to related developments in American social and cultural history. In the final decade when the medium still offered regularly a simultaneous experience of mass culture, television imagined communities in various states of fragmentation just as America, itself, was grappling with a fragmented age. The Lonely Nineties:
