Even his mask is inexpressive and gestureless. Starred Review. The character seemed so pitch-perfect that I took it for granted that he dated back to the golden age of pulp, so it was surprising to find out that his first appearance was as late as Got it for christmas. But man, that story. Wikimedia Commons. After all, it did fit. It's a damn shame Dave Stevens didn't produce more Rocketeer material during his time on Earth. So with that in mind, I was quite willing to roll with Betty being Betty. All of Dave Stevens' original The Rocketeer comics collected in one book! I agree with you Ron, The Rockteer is a great comic, and one of my favorite comics that got made into a movie and done well. Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. As such, he had to keep the narrative as simple as possible and throw everything he could into the art and the sense of adventure, which he did. I gave up on it because it seemed puerile and could barely capture my interest to turn the page. This is a great review, I agree! Show Details Description:. Can you think of other comics that are done better by their film adaptations? Jul 14, Justin rated it it was ok. So in conclusion: if you need a break from the dark misanthropic superhero comics that seem to litter the landscape, or if you just want something fun and bright to read, The Rocketeer is right up your alley. Like George Lucas before him, whose Indiana Jones movies were a heartfelt homage to the adventure serials he grew to cherish so much as a child, Stevens uses his creation to pay tribute to the characters who helped shape his creativity. Not being able to offer that puts a cap on how far a relationship will go and Cliff was at that cap. Finally the background information included in this edition was really interesting. Its too bad that this character got "lost in the shuffle". The point is that the American comics industry is shot through with cartoonists reinventing the creations of others. He just becomes a regular, vulnerable guy with a rocket pack. Well worth a look. Dave Stevens and his Rocketeer creation may not have as much of a back catalog as Captain America or Superman, but the goodwill for this character among fans and other comic creators is real and on display in this book. The stories were just as rich, if not richer given it was the wellspring of the One of my all time favorite memories of elementary school was going to see the movie "The Rocketeer" with my friend Kevin Malloy. Will it be his ticket to the big time or a one way trip into a pine box? This is where it all begins, and while there are some rough edges to it you can see how it inspired other people to soar. Seller rating : This seller has earned a 3 of 5 Stars rating from Biblio customers. The germane comparison is to what Drew and Josh Alan Friedman were doing at the same time. Just when I'm ready to roll my eyes that Betty is nothing more than a trophy for Cliff to win, she speaks up for herself on page "Grow up , Cliff! He's an everyman kid, kinda like Peter Parker. Particularly, I was impressed with Stevens use of layouts and depiction of action within the story. I was skeptical about the prospect of seeing these comics with more modern coloring, but I should have had more faith in Dave's choices and the talents of Laura Martin. Two pages later, Waid and Samnee give us two panels in succession that reveal plenty, just though a shadow passing over a metallic surface:. May 11, at pm. Confidential after reading it. Depicting aerial maneuvers and action is no easy feat in the pages of comic books, but Stevens was able to do it with ease. I watch the movie every now and then, it holds up well, IMO. For me, the greatness of the art was just not enough to tolerate the simplistic story. Danny Bilson , Paul De Meo. The dangerous mission transforms the ordinary young man into an extraordinary hero! Luckily, IDW has put together an amazing collection that not only celebrates the work of Dave Stevens, complete with back matter such as covers and additional artwork, for me to marvel over. Jeet Heer says:. Pages from a proposed three issue mini-series for DC that would have included Superman. Noted fantasy author Harlan Ellison , a fan of the Rocketeer and also an acquaintance of Dave Stevens, [ citation needed ] wrote the introduction to the collection; both Dave Stevens and Harlan Ellison signed the limited edition on a specially bound-in bookplate. Dave Stevens was born in Lynwood, California on July 29, With these two long-form adventures, at least, the character is finally living up to his iconic status, as a hero and— most importantly—as a comic. Starred Review. Common Sense Says More style than substance -- but fun, if gun-heavy, action. On March 11, , Dave Stevens lost a long battle against leukemia. The Rocketeer went on to star in his own comic book series, and in would become a well- received major motion picture from Walt Disney Studios. Everyone was raving about these collections, but it wasn't until recently that I got the opportunity to pick it up, and give it a proper reading. The Rocketeer: The Complete Collection Reviews In Cargo of Doom , he keeps dinosaurs from demolishing the town. With completely re-mastered art and coloring, Dave Stevens' masterpiece soars off the page as it never has before-and looks as stunningly beautiful as it always should have. Part of me understands Cliff's thinking; that if he could just provide for Betty what those other guys could provide by throwing money at her, he would distinguish himself. The tales in the Rocketeer are both pulpy adventure tales featuring secret agents, government stiffs, heavies, Hollywood phonies, and Cliff's knockout girlfriend Betty. He's handsome but he ain't too bright, and all he wants it serious star power so his hottie centerfold girlfriend won't leave him for a rich photographer. If cheap thrills are the purpose of superheroes then video games do a better job of that than any other medium. Mangaman says:. The first is penciled and has Rocketeer Adventure Magazine as if for a cover. Critics Consensus: An action-packed, if anachronistic, look back at pulp matinee serials, The Rocketeer may ring hollow with viewers expecting more than simple fun and gee-whiz special effects. From April 24th to June 5th, I posted a different bound edition from my shelves for auction, with the proceeds going to organizations like the Hero Initiative and Black Lives Matter. Jul 14, Justin rated it it was ok. Dave Stevens and his Rocketeer creation may not have as much of a back catalog as Captain America or Superman, but the goodwill for this character among fans and other comic creators is real and on display in this book. Stevens had a slick style that reminds me somewhat of Alex Toth The art holds up very well despite being almost 40 years old at this point. Seller Inventory As an adult, finding out that it was based off of a comic and reading said comic was like a trip back into the mindset of that awe-struck 8 year old. But the reason behind the enduring success of this series is the work of Dave Stevens. Kudos to IDW for bringing out a volume that is so obviously a labour of love. Stevens even went so far as to have the actions of the various characters talked about in panels - little action boxes that modern audiences tend to never see, but that were still a welcome sight in this book, as they really helped plant the story in the era it was set in.

  • Building the Interstate
Building the Interstate W. L. Mertz and Joyce Ritter FOREWORD What follows is the documentation of the critical events during the building of the Interstate System. The record begins with the passage of the 1956 Highway Act, which kicked off the Interstate construction program. It ends in 1974 just after the passage of the 1973 Highway Act, which was landmark legislation for the Interstate System and the highway program in general. We made several attempts to interpret the 1973 Act for the reader but abandoned it in favor of relying on quotations from those involved at the time who said what they thought it was. An earlier document named "Origins of the Interstate" explored the critical years in the conceptualization of the Interstate System culminating in the 1956 Highway Act. Both documents rely heavily on quoted excerpts of speeches made by people who were influential in charting the course of the highway program during those years. We have found that no paraphrasing expresses the essence of the issues of the times as well as the words of those who were involved and spoke them. By far the richest source of material has been American Highways, the quarterly journal of the American Association of State Highway Officials. It faithfully recorded the views of its own members, Congressmen, Federal officials and indeed, the adversaries of the highway program. The reasons for stopping the record in 1974 are several. First, our scheduled time allotted for this task was running out. Second, the events following the 1973 Highway Act are recent history. We have been involved in that history and so are too close to it to make unbiased judgments about what should be highlighted.

Paramount Collection Airtight To control the air is to rule the world. Nuclear testing has fractured the Earth's crust, releasing poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Breathable air is now an expensive and rare commodity. A few cities have survived by constructing colossal air stacks which reach through the toxic layer to the remaining pocket of precious air above. The air is pumped into a huge underground labyrinth system, where a series of pipes to the surface feed the neighborhoods of the sealed city. It is the Air Force, known as the "tunnel hunters", that polices the system. Professor Randolph Escher has made a breakthrough in a top-secret project, the extraction of oxygen from salt water in quantity enough to return breathable air to the world. Escher is kidnapped by business tycoon Ed Conrad, who hopes to monopolize the secret process and make a fortune selling the air by subscription to the masses. Because Conrad Industries controls the air stacks, not subscribing to his "air service" would mean certain death. When Air Force Team Leader Flyer Lucci is murdered, his son Rat Lucci soon uncovers Conrad's involvement in his father's death and in Escher's kidnapping. Rat must go after Conrad, not only to avenge his father's murder, but to rescue Escher and his secret process as well. The loyalties of Rat's Air Force colleagues are questionable, but Rat has no choice. Alone, if necessary, he must fight for humanity's right to breathe. Idle Hour: NoHo's Beloved Barrel Reborn By Alysia Gray Painter http://www.nbclosangeles.com/entertainment/the-scene/Idle-Hour-NoHos-Beloved- Barrel-Reborn-291527871.html NBC Los Angeles Says: If Los Angeles building styles could be viewed as members of a large and loopy family, roadside vernacular architecture, or programmatic architecture, if you prefer, would absolutely be the nutty cousin who balances spoons on his nose and sings songs backwards, all to garner attention and bring delight. It's the Cabazon dinosaurs and it's the bulldog-shaped diner seen in "The Rocketeer" and it's every outlandish vintage design conceived to catch the eyes, and cash, of early motorists. And it's the barrel-shaped structure near the appropriately attention- garnering North Hollywood intersection of Lankershim Boulevard, Vineland Avenue, and Camarillo Street. Yep, we speak of what was formerly La Caña Restaurant, or what's often called The Barrel, a long-closed gem which is getting another longed-for shot as an open-and-in- business business. But here's the twist: Idle Hour, the fresh handle for the bar, is actually its long-gone moniker. Surely you remember back in the 1940s when it was called The Idle Hour Cafe & Tap Room, yes? La Caña came later, and then, after it was long closed, a designation to save the not-looking-too-great spot: Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument #977. That's a fair estimation, yes? If you strolled by the structure in recent years, you likely thought, or voiced, that it had "seen better days" (or some other "someone should save this place" lamentation).

Working Paper Series SPECIAL ISSUE: REVISITING AUDIENCES: RECEPTION, IDENTITY, TECHNOLOGY Superheroes and Shared Universes: How Fans and Auteurs Are Transforming the Hollywood Blockbuster Edmund Smith University of Otago Abstract: Over the course of the 2000s, the Hollywood blockbuster welcomed the superhero genre into its ranks after these films saw an explosion in popularity. Now, the ability to produce superhero films through an extended transmedia franchise is a coveted prize for major studios. The likes of Sony, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros. are locked in competition with the new kid on the block, Marvel, who changed the way Hollywood produces the blockbuster franchise. Drawing upon my previous and current postgraduate work, this essay will discuss fans and authorship in relation to the superhero genre which, I posit, exemplifies the industrial model of the Hollywood blockbuster and the cycle of appropriation and revitalisation that defines it. I will explain how studios like Marvel call upon up-and-coming directorial talent to further legitimise their films in order to appeal to middlebrow expectations through auteur credibility. Such director selection demonstrates: 1) how the contemporary auteur has become commodified within transmedia franchise blockbusters and, 2) how, due to the conflicting creative and commercial interests inherent to the blockbuster, these films are now supported by a form of co-dependent authorship. Related to this, I will also explore how fans function within this industrial context and the effect that their fannish support and promotion of superhero films has had on the latter’s viability as a staple of studio production. ISSN2253-4423 © MFCO Working Paper Series 3 MFCO Working Paper Series 2017 Introduction From the 2000s, through to the present day, the superhero film has seen a titanic increase in popularity, becoming a staple of the mainstream film industry.
