INTRODUCTION. The series of memoirs contained in the present volume has resulted from a minor grant made to me by the Carnegie Institution of Wash- ington in the autumn of 1913 for the study of the stratigraphic geology and of the fossil corals and associated organisms in several of the smaller West Indian Islands and from the authority given me by the Director of the United States Geological Survey to make the investigations as a part of my official work. The objects of these studies were stated in 1 my first progress report, as follows: (1) To study the stratigraphic geology of the islands, and to make paleon- tologic collections with special reference to the stratigraphic occurrence of the fossils, so as to establish a proper basis for correlating the geologic formations in the islands with those of the southeastern United States and Panama. (2) To make additional collections of fossil corals in order to present a more comprehensive and exact account of the successive coral faunas antecedent to the living fauna than was possible with the material already available, and thus trace the history of the development of the coral faunas through Tertiary time up to and including the Recent fauna. (3) To study the physiography of the islands in order to get a basis for making deductions as to how the conditions were brought about under which the living coral reefs were formed. I left Washington during the latter part of January 1914, and spent the month of February and most of March in the islands of Antigua, Saint Bartholomew, Anguilla, Saint Martin, and Saint Christopher. While engaged in field work I received a great deal of help from the officials of the respective islands and will particularly mention Sir H. Hesketh Bell, then governor of the Leeward Islands, and T. L. Rox- borough, then administrator of Saint Christopher. Rather large collec- tions of fossils resulted from my efforts and they have now been com- pletely or almost completely described and illustrated. Five papers are herewith presented; my own account of the fossil coral faunas is almost finished ; Dr. Robert T. Jackson has nearly completed his memoir on the fossil echinoids; and Dr. Paul Bartsch intends to submit a paper on the fossil and living land Mollusca of the Leeward and Virgin Islands. The accompanying papers and those nearly complete supply the foundation for the correlation of the different geologic events in the West Indies, and they will be followed by descriptions of local geologic details and an account of the general development of the region, in correlation with the geologic events that were taking place in the southeastern United States and Central America. BARTHOLOMEW, ANTIGUA, AND ANGUILLA. By Marshall A. Howe. The present paper contains descriptions and illustrations of the fossil calcareous algae collected in February and March 1914, by Dr. T. W. Vaughan, in the Eocene St. Bartholomew limestone of the island of St. Bartholomew, the middle Oligocene Antigua formation of the island of Antigua, and the upper Oligocene Anguilla formation of the island of Anguilla. ALGJE. Class RHODOPHYCEiE. Family CORALLINACE^. Genus ARCH^OLITHOTHAMNIUM Rothpletz. Archaeolithothamnium afflne, new species. (Plate 4, Figure 1; Plate 5.) The following is a description of this species: Thallus terete or slightly flattened, 3 cm. (or more?) long, 3.5 to 6.0 mm. in diameter (8 mm. at a dichotomy), somewhat divaricately dichotomous, more or less sinuous and nodose, the apices broad and rounded-obtuse or subacute; medullary hypothallium zonate, its cells mostly 16 to 30 n by 8 to 13 p, transi- tion to the perithallium gradual; peritballium more or less distinctly zonate, its cells 8 to 26 n by 8 to 13 /*, often about 14 n high and 12 n broad; sporangia! sori becoming overgrown and embedded, the sporangial cavities elliptic-oval in longitudinal section, 55 to 78 n high and 27 to 46 /* broad. In the Carlisle marl pit (Oligocene, lower part of Antigua forma- tion), on slope just above the level of the central plain, Antigua, West Indies, T. W. Vaughan, station No. 6873 (type), February 10, 1914; also .at McKinnon's (Oligocene, Antigua formation), Antigua, T. W. Vaughan, No. 6888, March 1914. The latter of the two specimens is partially embedded, but the former (plate 4) is free.

Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Taxonomic implications of the residual colour patterns of ampullinid gastropods and their contribution to the discrimination from naticids. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (2): 329–347. The diversity of residual colour patterns is revealed for the first time in the European fossil Ampullinidae. The colour pat− terns were studied under Ultraviolet (UV) light in approximately 3100 specimens belonging to 83 species, 12 genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina, Ampullonatica, Eocernina, Ampul− linopsis, Vanikoropsis, Pictavia, and Ampullospira) and three subgenera (Globularia, Deshayesia, and Cernina within the genus Globularia). Forty−six Cainozoic species revealed residual colour patterns and 29 of them, belonging to six genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina), are described herein as ex− amples representing the entire diversity of the encountered colour patterns. These patterns are most diverse during the Middle Eocene coincident with the period of highest taxonomic diversity of the Ampullinidae. Four basic classes, re− garded as containing possible homologous colour patterns in terms of pigments incorporation modalities, are proposed. Class I, a fluorescent wide diffuse area or spiral stripes, occurs in most of the species, while the three others are more pecu− liar. Class II, fluorescent axial zigzagging stripes, Class III, fluorescent axial to slightly opisthocline stripes or segments, and Class IV, fluorescent patches forming axial segments by coalescence, allow an easy distinction between the genera Globularia, Pachycrommium, and three peculiar species of Ampullina.

Today, the free-living bryozoans often dominate epi- benthic faunal communities in these expansive habi- tats, yet their biology and ecology remain poorly un- derstood. This study examines their unique mode of life by exploring the relationship between form and function in the free-living Cupuladriidae of tropical America. Cupuladriid species occupy distinct niches in water depth and sediment type, and these vari- ables correlate with a variety of morphological traits amongst species, thereby helping formulate hypothe- ses on functional morphology. These hypotheses were tested with disturbance, burial and mobility experi- ments. They are an increasingly popular alternative to the classic parametric approach because they can approximate behaviors of parameters that are not understood theoretically. The primary goal of most resampling methods is an empirical approximation of a sampling distribution of a statistic of interest, whether simple (mean or standard error) or more complicated (median, kurtosis, or eigenvalue). This chapter focuses on the conceptual and practical aspects of resampling methods that a user is likely to face when designing them, rather than the relevant math- ematical derivations and intricate details of the statistical theory. The chapter reviews the concept of sampling distributions, outlines a generalized methodology for designing resampling methods, summarizes major types of resampling strategies, highlights some commonly used resampling protocols, and addresses various practical decisions involved in designing algorithm details. A particular emphasis has been placed here on bootstrapping, a resampling strategy used extensively in quantitative paleontological analyses, but other resampling techniques are also reviewed in detail. In addition, ad hoc and literature-based case examples are provided to illustrate virtues, limitations, and potential pitfalls of resampling methods.     Morphogenetic gradients in graptolites and bryozoans ADAM URBANEK Urbanek, A. 2004. Morphogenetic gradients in graptolites and bryozoans. Acta Palaentologica Polonica 49 (4): 485–504. Despite independent evolution of coloniality in hemichordates and bryozoans, their colonies show common features. In both instances colony is a genet or clonal system composed of zygotic oozooid and a number of blastozooids (= modules) integrated by physical continuity of tissues, sharing a common genotype and subject to common morphogenetic control. In some groups of graptolites and bryozoans, colonies display a regular morphological gradient. Simple graptoloid and bryozoan colonies consist of a proximal zone of astogenetic change and a distal zone of astogenetic repetition. Observed morphological gradient may be attributed to diffusion, along the colony axis, of a morphogen produced by the oozooid; in the zone of astogenetic change the morphogen is above certain threshold level and drops below it in the zone of asto− genetic repetition. This model is supported by observations on regeneration of fractured graptoloid colonies. Regenera− tive branch never displays astogenetic change. The same rule is valid for regeneration of fractured bryozoan colonies. While the early astogeny of simple bryozoan colonies may be explained within the framework of the gradient theory, the late astogeny of more complex ones involves multiple succession of zones of change and repetition, without analogy in astogeny of graptoloids. Thus, late astogeny in bryozoan colonies may be controlled by cyclic somatic/reproductive changes, probably independent of the primary morphogen. Evolutionary changes in the graptoloid colonies involve both the spreading of the novelties over a greater number of zooids (penetrance) and an increase in the degree of phenotypic manifestation of a given character (expressivity).
