  • Madonna's Postmodern Revolution
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, January 2021, Vol. 11, No. 1, 26-32 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2021.01.004 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Rebel Madame: Madonna’s Postmodern Revolution Diego Santos Vieira de Jesus ESPM-Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The aim is to examine Madonna’s revolution regarding gender, sexuality, politics, and religion with the focus on her songs, videos, and live performances. The main argument indicates that Madonna has used postmodern strategies of representation to challenge the foundational truths of sex and gender, promote gender deconstruction and sexual multiplicity, create political sites of resistance, question the Catholic dissociation between the physical and the divine, and bring visual and musical influences from multiple cultures and marginalized identities. Keywords: Madonna, postmodernism, pop culture, sex, gender, sexuality, politics, religion, spirituality Introduction Madonna is not only the world’s highest earning female entertainer, but a pop culture icon. Her career is based on an overall direction that incorporates vision, customer and industry insight, leveraging competences and weaknesses, consistent implementation, and a drive towards continuous renewal. She constructed herself often rewriting her past, organized her own cult borrowing from multiple subaltern subcultures, and targeted different audiences. As a postmodern icon, Madonna also reflects social contradictions and attitudes toward sexuality and religion and addresses the complexities of race and gender. Her use of multiple media—music, concert tours, films, and videos—shows how images and symbols associated with multiracial, LGBT, and feminist groups were inserted into the mainstream. She gave voice to political interventions in mass popular culture, although many critics argue that subaltern voices were co-opted to provide maximum profit.

  • Gender, Sexuality, and Female Performers Maisie Hayden Spring
Fashion in Twentieth-Century Stage Acts: Gender, Sexuality, and Female Performers Maisie Hayden Spring 2016 First Reader: Barbara Mennel Second Reader: Maureen Turim Table of Contents 1. Introduction………………………………………………………………………………..1 2. Chapter One: Cross-Dressing and Stage Acts in Marlene Dietrich’s Early Hollywood Films………………………………………………………………………………………4 3. Chapter Two: Feminine Dress and Sex Appeal in Tina Turner’s Biopic and Live Performances…….............................................................................................................18 4. Chapter Three: Madonna and Cross-Dressing in Past and Present Live Stage Shows…..30 5. Conclusion……………………………………………………………………………….45 1 Introduction When Marlene Dietrich exploded on the big screen with her portrayal of the alluring German cabaret performer Lola-Lola in Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel (1930), she sparked a public discussion about how women are portrayed in film. This debate continues in scholarship today, focusing on the role on-stage performance plays in liberating women and communicating the dimensions of gender and sexuality. The rendering of female performers on stage and screen has remained a topic among the public and scholars alike since the early twentieth century and continues to evolve in accordance with changing feminist ideals. Fashion in particular serves as a vehicle for expressing gender and sexuality, highlighting how explicit performances in a film communicate ideas that would otherwise be deemed inappropriate and subversive. Through moments in Hollywood filmmaking that demonstrate the ways contemporary popular culture reflects and advocates feminist ideals, this thesis addresses how female performers are presented on-screen and the ways their provocative performances communicate gender and sexuality. Gender-defying, promiscuous female characters in film have been the focus of a scholarly debate since Dietrich invaded Hollywood with her foreign sex appeal and risqué performances in the 1930s.

  • Persona As Key Component in (Cultural) Person Branding
Persona Studies 2020, vol. 6, no. 1 PERSONA AS KEY COMPONENT IN (CULTURAL) PERSON BRANDING NICHOLAS QYLL INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR ABSTRACT This article examines the elements and processes involved in the visual construction of person brands, and their personas as key components of those brands, in pursuit of the research question: What pictorial design strategies make person brands succeed? Key findings of the empirical investigation of the iconic artist brand Madonna allow a focus on Madonna’s image and her fans’ co-creative image practice through a visual frame analysis and cultural reading of her self- brand. Madonna has created a complex ‘worldview world’ that is governed by a metanarrative and feeds on the diverse acts of referencing cultural image icons. At the same time, central strategies of her image representations are reflected in the fan artefacts investigated. This article thus focuses not only on the role of the visual in person branding and in a modern-day visual brand culture. It also considers the place and form of such cultural person branding within the persona studies field. KEY WORDS Cultural Person Branding; Persona; Visual Representation; Madonna; Prosumer Culture; Fanart INTRODUCTION: CULTURAL PERSON BRANDING Brands are pervasive phenomena of our time (Kornberger 2010; Lury 2004; Marshall 2017; Moor 2007) that comprise not just companies, products and services, but increasingly persons. The broadening of the brand concept is promoted by challenging conditions of perception when an image-dominated information society seems to say “esse est percipi”: you can’t stand out from the crowd unless you show yourself. This visibility requirement emphatically calls for construction of a public persona (Marshall 2015, p.
