Dates for your diary Improving Specialist Care across GM: Staff update Coffee Break Pennine Greater Manchester’s Joint Commissioning Board met this week Coffee Break Salford (17 Sept) to review proposals for five specialist acute services and how in the future they could be arranged and provided across the Jobs region as part of the Improving Specialist Care (ISC) programme, formally known as GM Theme 3: Research & Innovation -Breast services -Respiratory services Health and -Vascular services Wellbeing Pennine -Benign Urology -Paediatric Surgery Health and Wellbeing Salford The NCA continues to play an active role in the ISC Programme, involving a number of our senior clinicians and senior managers E-learning Pennine for each of these specialities. We are excited to announce that we will shortly be appearing on the BBC’s Junior Doctors series. Episodes will air from Sunday 22nd September on BBC3 iPlayer, with episodes starting on BBC1 on Tuesday 24th September and running for four weeks. The fly on-the-wall documentary follows six doctors Sofia Arkhipkina, Howra Ktayen, Nick Ronan, Luke McEvoy, Tom Gubbin and Zohaib Khawaja as they embark on placements on different wards and departments across Salford Royal, within a variety of different specialities, including ageing and complex medicine, surgery and the Emergency Department. Look out for Drs Howra, Nick and Sofia live on the BBC Breakfast couch tomorrow (Friday 20 September) from 8.40am. Read more Congratulations to Endoscopy Congratulations to our colleagues in Endoscopy who are celebrating after achieving JAG accreditation for providing high standards of patient care and safety. Jane Mason, unit manager, said: “We are all absolutely thrilled to have achieved JAG accreditation; it has taken many months of really hard work from the whole team. The JAG assessment is very rigorous and we had to provide evidence that we are meeting high standards in everything from patient safety to workforce training and also demonstrate that our patients feel they are involved in their care.” Read more Andrew’s Clipper Race challenge Orthopaedic consultant Andrew Henry has set sail on the Clipper round the world yacht race to raise awareness and money for victims of domestic violence. Andrew, who has worked at Salford Royal since 1999 as an orthopaedic surgeon and had several other roles including Clinical Lead for Trauma, has been planning the race for around two years and is currently sailing near Morocco. He is taking on The Clipper Race, a 40,000 nautical mile race around the world, on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. Read more Patient information commendation Two patient information leaflets from Salford Royal were shortlisted for the British Medical Association Patient Information Awards 2019. The awards event was held at BMA House in London, 10 September 2019. ‘Periarticular knee osteotomy’ was highly commended by the judging panel as a clear document which gives helpful information to patients with useful illustrations, and ‘Physiotherapy advice - multi-level spinal instrumentation’ was also commended. Salford Royal was represented by the leaflet authors Lindsay Sudell, Rebecca Twigden, Aiman Khunda and Ka Wing Chu and the design services team Nick Trow and Louise Tehrani. Louise Tehrani said: “We are extremely proud to represent the high standards of patient information produced at Salford Royal, from our robust trust document control systems to the professional design and bespoke illustrations - these commendations demonstrate the importance of clear, cohesive patient information in healthcare.” Salford Together: Integrated care in neighbourhoods Salford Together is supporting the development of integrated care in neighbourhoods to support the transformation of health and care services, helping to provide the best care and outcomes for local people. They are inviting health and social care staff to join them at a forthcoming event to be a part of shaping integrated care for the future. The event is on Wednesday 16th October, 9am - 4pm, The Lighthouse Church, 12 Centenary Park, Coronet Wat, Salford, M50 1RE. For more info President and Vice-Chancellor of Manchester university to visit SCO - 16th October The President and Vice-Chancellor of Manchester University, Dame Nancy Rothwell will be visiting Salford Care Organisation on Wednesday 16th October, 9:30am - 12pm. These visits have proved extremely useful and Professor Rothwell very much values these opportunities to meet staff and student in their 'home' environment. Open Meeting for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students who are able to attend (c.30minutes) From 10am 3. Open Meeting for staff who are able to attend (c.30minutes) from 10:30am This will include an Opening Address (c.5 minutes) from the President and will then be opened up into a general question and answer session (c.25 minutes) The open meetings will take place in the undergraduate lecture theatre in the Barnes Building from 10am. For more Salford Care Organisation news - click here Oldham Care Organisation Royal Oldham League of Friends donation to Ward F7 The Royal Oldham League of Friends have made a fabulous donation of £4000 to fund the refurbishment of a family room on Ward F7. The funds have been used to set up a lovely new Serenity Room for patients and families to relax in. The League of Friends have worked hard with ward staff to develop and decorate the room, which now offers a fantastic new space for families to relax in, often during difficult times. The refurbishment includes a new television, sofa bed, microwave and decoration - and the end result of all the hard work is a great new space. The League of Friends made a special visit to see the new Serenity Room and met with Ward Manager, Shelley Begum and Charitable Fundraising Coordinator, Shelley Owen, who thanked the League of Friends for funding the fabulous new space on behalf of patients and staff. Ward T3 triumph with vascular awareness static bike ride Staff from Ward T3 at Oldham Care Organisation have triumphed in a static bike race from John O'Groats to Lands End against competing NHS Trusts. The team undertook the challenge as part of Vascular Disease Awareness Month promotional activities, to help raise awareness of common vascular diseases with patients, as part of the Circulation Foundation's 'Step It Up' campaign. They totally smashed the target of completing the 956 mile journey in 28 days by completing it in just 2 weeks.
