Film, Television and Video Productions Featuring Brass Bands
Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light. -

Scan, Scan, Scan – Everywhere You Go
CEO UPDATE 25 January 2021 | 25 Kohi-ta–tea 2021 Scan, scan, scan – everywhere you go When did you last go to the supermarket? What day was it? And what time did you enter and leave the store? When did you visit the playground with the kids? Can you recall whether you scanned in the last time you visited a café, the chemist or library? The announcement yesterday of a community case of COVID-19 in a returnee after they’d left managed isolation is a sobering and timely reminder that we can’t let our guard down – we need to keep up all the good habits that served us well last year. COVID-19 is an extremely tricky virus to manage, as we’ve seen overseas and here in New Zealand. Thankfully this person was diligently using the app everywhere she went. It’s so important to use the COVID Tracer app to scan QR codes and to have the Bluetooth functionality turned on. If you haven’t already done so, download the COVID Tracer app today, turn on Bluetooth and scan or keep a written record of where you go and when, and who you are with. It’s also important to stay home if you are unwell, maintain stringent hygiene practices, including washing and drying your hands and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use your If you’ve been travelling in Northland recently, you can check here for elbow. -

Radio Lollipop is an international children’s charity, which provides Care, Comfort, Play and Entertainment to sick children in hospital and their families. We pride ourselves on being professional with volunteers who are conscientious, reliable and prepared to make a weekly commitment. Radio Lollipop is FUN but professional. ☺ Where did it start? Radio Lollipop originated in 1978 at Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children in Carshalton, Surrey in the United Kingdom. Designed to bring the joy of entertainment to sick children, the idea captured the imagination of the world, so that now there are Radio Lollipops located in United Kingdom: Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Manchester; New Zealand: Auckland and Middlemore; Australia: Perth, Fremantle, Joondalup, ourselves in Brisbane, Logan and Gold Coast, and in the USA: Miami and Houston. ☺ When does it operate? The station and ward activities operate: Mater Children's Hospital Logan Hospital Monday - Friday 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm Monday - Wednesday 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm Saturday 2.30 pm - 5.00 pm Gold Coast Hospital Wednesday & Thursday Saturday ☺ What do volunteers do? Each volunteer works on the wards with the children reading stories, playing games, helping with craft activities and competitions. But most importantly we provide companionship and a friend to talk to. Play serves as a means of alleviating boredom, stress, anger and fear felt by a child during their hospital stay. -
Everyone Can Help Radio Lollipop and the Sick Children in Hospitals Around the World
Media release: Everyone can help Radio Lollipop and the sick children in hospitals around the world What people say about us: “Radio Lollipop is not a frilly add-on. It is really helpful clinically - a calm child recovers better …every member of staff and parent and child think it is fantastic…” Madeline Ismach, 2007 Head of Psychosocial Services, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London Our Mission: Radio Lollipop is an international children's charity providing care, comfort, play and entertainment to sick children in hospital. Our Vision: To reach every child in hospital – anywhere, any time Our History: The Radio Lollipop service was founded in the UK in 1979 as a one-off project. After more than 38 years as an entirely volunteer organisation Radio Lollipop has grown to include over 10,000 volunteers operating in 32 hospitals in 5 countries. We operate satellite stations in number of suburban/regional hospitals. Since 1979 Radio Lollipop volunteers have directly helped over 5 million sick children in hospitals and reached over 13 million people worldwide. Our Objectives: To provide care, comfort play and entertainment for children in hospitals everywhere. Our Opportunities: 1. Modern hospital design is focusing on providing single-bed wards. This further isolates children and underscores the growing and continued need for Radio Lollipop and our play volunteers to help sick children connect to the world outside their ward. 2. To achieve our vision of reaching every child, everywhere we need to be flexible. We can deliver Radio Lollipop in a number of ways: a. Radio Lollipop Full service; an in-hospital radio station plus volunteers for ward visiting and one-to-one play with the children. -

In this document you will find biographies for just some of the hugely talented people the BBC has already been working with and others who have made their mark elsewhere. It’s the responsibility of every person involved in BBC programme making to ask themselves whether what, and who, they are putting on screen reflects the world around them or just one section of society. November, 1961. MY DEAR GIRLS AND OLD GIRLS, Last January, only a few months after retiring from the Board of Governors, the Yen. J . L . Cobham passed away . In my last letter I mentioned his retirement and said how we should miss him at Governors' meetings. Throughout his life he thought and prayed constantly for Stover, and we re- ceived from him a little letter in his own hand-writing only a few days before he died, thinking us for the Christmas card signed by all the girls . We know the school owes much to his prayers and thoughtfulness, and we are deeply grateful for his long friendship. -

David Mason Response to the Future of Children's Programming
The Future of Children’s TV 1. Introduction Page 2 2. What’s the purpose of Children’s TV? Page 2 3. BBC Children’s Television Failings Page 2 4. Recommendations Page 4 5. Conclusion Page 4 Appendix A Page 5 Appendix B Page 7 Appendix C Page 8 Appendix D Page 10 1 1. Introduction In response to the OFCOM consultation of 3rd October 2007 Children's TV is in crisis. But why does anyone care? Why would it matter if children's television disappeared completely? Is this just about losing jobs in an industry, or is it an issue of providing an important and worthwhile service to young people and therefore to society as a whole? 2. What’s the purpose of Children’s TV? There is a children's TV crisis, and although the reason is due in part to advertising restrictions that doesn't in any way excuse the BBC's shoddy treatment of children detailed in this submission to OFCOM. Jocelyn Hay, from the Voice of the Listener and Viewer, told BBC News 24 on 15 May 2007 that children need programmes made in this country, and pointed out that they "want to be entertained but they also have a right to information, to educational programmes, live programmes, programmes that reflect their own rich heritage of speech, language, culture and their own environment and locations which help them to grow up to be informed citizens of this country, not of some mid-Atlantic fantasy world." Mrs Hay's statement goes to the heart of why it is so important that this country has our own good quality children's programmes.
