Tony Hancock,1951 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its inception in 1976, the THAS and its many allies have been at the forefront of efforts to find, preserve and promote the works of Tony Hancock. As detailed in the previous volume of this series, this toil has, over the decades, yielded innumerable discoveries of work by Hancock that was previously believed to have been lost. The result is that the THAS now has the most extensive archive of Hancock’s stage, radio, television, and film work in the world. In addition, we have myriad recorded items related to his career, such as interviews and documentaries featuring Hancock, his colleagues and friends. Each offers valuable insights into his life and work. It is this extensive collection, combined principally with that of Ted Kendall, the noted sound engineer and media researcher, and the contents of the BBC Sound Archives, that have enabled the publication of Hancock’s Half Hour Collectibles. It is natural for modern audiences to question why broadcast material is missing from the period in which Hancock was ascendant from the late 40s until 1968. As many readers may know, this issue has, in fact, affected the legacy of numerous performers, programmes and broadcasts; and this phenomenon is by no means limited to the BBC, the United Kingdom, or indeed, the period during which Hancock was active.

They were ‘plump and shocking pink, with noses that were long, perhaps for sucking up … soup’.1 Originally broadcast on BBC One during 1969–72, the series was repeated many times thereafter. On the night of 10 October 1974 the BBC showed a special episode, ‘Vote for Froglet’, one designed for grown-ups, in which the narrator informs the Clangers that ‘the proudest moment of the British people [is] a parliamentary election’. The purpose of the episode was, however, not to celebrate the state of democracy on the day the country went to the polls. Postgate had something he wanted to get off his chest. The grandson of George Lansbury, who led the Labour party during 1932–5, Postgate was from a left-wing bohemian family. Yet, as the post-war period developed, he came to believe that ‘the prospect of a just and loving social order based on the principles of true socialism’, for which his grandfather and parents had worked, would not materialize.

    Introduction: British art cinema 1 Introduction – British art cinema: creativity, experimentation and innovation Paul Newland and Brian Hoyle What is art cinema? Definitions of art cinema have long been contested, but the generic term ‘art cinema’ has generally come to stand for feature-length narrative films that are situated at the margins of mainstream cinema, located some- where between overtly experimental films and more obviously commercial product. Whether it is through a modernist, drifting, episodic approach to storytelling; a complex engagement with high culture; the foregrounding of a distinct authorial voice; or a simple refusal to bow to normal commercial considerations, at its heart the term ‘art cinema’ has come to represent film- making which is distinct from – and often in direct opposition to – popular narrative film. But for Steve Neale, writing in a seminal article published in the journal Screen in 1981, the term ‘art cinema’ applies not just to individ- ual films and film histories but also to patterns of distribution, exhibition, reception and audience engagement.1 Moreover, art cinema, in its cultural and aesthetic aspirations but also its audience, relies heavily upon an appeal to ‘universal’ values of culture and art. This is reflected in the existence of international festivals, where distribution is sought for these films, and where their status as ‘art’ – and as films ‘to be taken seriously’ – is confirmed and re-stated through prizes and awards.     Oxford DNB: January 2021 Welcome to the seventieth update of the Oxford DNB, which adds biographies of 241 individuals who died in the year 2017: 224 with their own entries and seventeen added to existing entries as 'co-subjects'. Of these new inclusions, the earliest born is the journalist Clare Hollingworth (1911-2017) and the latest born is the artist and photographer Khadija Saye (1992- 2017). Hollingworth is one of five centenarians included in this update, and Saye one of thirty-four new subjects born after the Second World War. The vast majority (169, or over 70%) were born in the 1920s and 1930s. Sixty-three of the new subjects who died in 2017 (or just over 26% of the cohort) are women. Twenty of the new subjects were themselves contributors to the dictionary. Forty-five of the new articles include portrait images. From January 2021, the Oxford DNB offers biographies of 64,071 men and women who have shaped the British past, contained in 61,745 articles. 11,870 biographies include a portrait image of the subject—researched in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London. As ever, we have a free selection of these new entries, together with a full list of the new biographies. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to the Oxford DNB, which means you can access the complete dictionary for free via your local library. It argues that an exploration of sitcoms reveals the mindset of postwar Britons and highlights how television developed both as an industry and as a public institution. This research demonstrates how Britain metamorphosed in this period from a welfare state with an implicit promise to establish a meritocratic and expert-based society, into a multiracial, consumer society ruled by the market. It illustrates how this turnabout of British society was formulated, debated, and shaped in British sitcoms. This dissertation argues that both democratization (resulting from the expansion of the franchise after World War I) and decolonization in the post-World War II era, established culture as a prominent political space in which interaction and interconnection between state and society took place. Therefore, this work focuses on culture and on previously less noticed parties to the negotiation over power in society such as, media institutions, media practitioners, and their audiences.
