Codenamed “Overlord” but best known today as “D-Day”, the operation saw Allied forces landing on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France in huge numbers. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold on the French coastline. The statistics for the invasion force involved in the operation are staggering. By midnight on 6 June, 132,000 Allied forces had landed in France, while more than 2 million were eventually shipped there, comprising a total of 39 divisions. Thousands of vessels took part in the operation including 139 major warships; 221 smaller combat vessels; more than 1000 minesweepers and auxiliary vessels; 4,000 landing craft; 805 merchant ships; 59 blockships; and 300 miscellaneous small craft. Eleven thousand aircraft also took part including fighters, bombers, transports and gliders. The invasion force also had the support of around 350,000 members of the French Resistance, who launched hit-and-run attacks on German targets.     A Battlefield Tour 2018 Pictorial Review Normandy D-Day Landings 5th - 9th April: A tour for Charles Dent and friends visited the landing grounds of the greatest military operation in history to understand why and how the Canadian, American and British Allies came ashore believing in their cause, their leadership and in themselves. David Winn GBG guided them throughout the 5-day tour. They stood on the Normandy assault beaches of Sword, Juno, Utah, ‘Bloody’ Omaha and Gold, where the only Victoria Cross was won on D-Day. They toured the Airborne Landing sites at Ste Mere Eglise, Pegasus Bridge, Ranville and Merville to learn of those momentous events of the 6th June some 74 years ago. Touring Together Charles Dent, John Furness, Jeff Kindleysides, Fiona & Joe Goodhart, Matthew Ingle, David Lowes, James Crathorne & David Winn Ranville CWGC Cemetery They walked the cliffs at Arromanches Arromanches and visualised the logistics that enabled this massive seaborne assault landing, the German heavy guns at Longues and the scene of the US Ranger’s dramatic attack on Ponte du Hoc.     Tourism, Remembrance and the Landscape of War Geoffrey R. Bird A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between tourism and remembrance in a landscape of war, specifically the Normandy beaches of World War II where the D-Day Landings of June 6, 1944 took place. The anthropological investigation employs a theoretical framework that incorporates tourist performance, tourism worldmaking, landscape, cultural memories of war and remembrance. The thesis also examines the tourism-remembrance relationship by way of the various vectors that inform cultural memory, such as the legend of D-Day, national war mythologies and war films, and how these are interpreted and refashioned through tourism. Adopting a constructivist paradigm the ethnographic fieldwork involves observation of thirteen guided bus tours and the annual D-Day commemorations in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The research also includes over 50 key informant interviews representing management, visitors, tour guides and veterans in the war heritage force field, along with a visitor online feedback tool. Reflexive journaling is also employed as a central method in collecting and analyzing data. In this context, the research draws upon ethnography as a means of understanding social meaning and behavior as they relate to the cultural phenomenon of war remembrance. This involves researching both the visitor experience and how it is negotiated and mediated by tourism worldmaking agencies such as museums, tour guides and travel guide books. The research findings demonstrate the complexity of the context, conflicts and contributions of the tourism-remembrance relationship.
