It axgues that Germanic Immigrant scientists who fled the Nazis In thel930s were vital In energizing a productive colleglality among scientists and relnvlgoratlng a dlelectlcal Interplay between theorists and experimentalists, both of which characterize "classical" science. This unique Intellectual contribution and the "Internal dynamic" of doing science are described as becoming embedded In new social and ethical structures since World War II. New directions for research have been shaped by such "external" factors as the increased accountability of science, governmental mega-projects and secrecy, the enlarged dimension of "Instrumentalities" In science, changes in social relationships In the laboratory, and changes in the expectations of the public. As a consequence, styles of doing science, the motivations of scientists, and theoretical/experimental Interactions, all part of the "Internal" dynamic of science, have been stressed and to some extent transformed. The concluding chapter aigues that the most appropriate designation for American science since the 1960s Is not Just "big." In the most expansive sense of the word, it Is Barociue. 6 I The Forest and Its Trees A young Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard, brilliant and always happy to surprise, was one of the earliest scientists to flee Nazi Germany in 1933. Szilard recalled: Hitler came into office in January '33, and I had no doubt what would happen. I lived in the faculty club of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin-Dahlem and I had my suitcases which were packed standing in my room; the key was in them, and all I had to do was turn the key and leave when things got too bad. I was there when the Reichstaff brand occurred, and I remember how difficult it was for people there to understand what was going on. ... I went to see my friend Michael Polyani and told him what had happened, and he looked at me and said, "Do you realty mean to say that you think the secretary of the interior hiad anything to do with this?" and I said, Yes, that is precisely what I mean," and he just looked at me with incredulous eyes.,.. How quickly things move you can see from this: I took a train from Berlin to Vienna on a certain date, close to the first of April, 1933. The train was empty. The same train on the next day was overcrowded, was stopped at the frontier, the people had to get out and everybody was Interrogated by the Nazis. This just goes to show that if you want to succeed In this world you don't have to be much cleverer than other people, you just have to be one day earlier than most people. This is all it takes.1 Between 1933, the year of the Reichstag fire, Nazi ascendancy and dismissal of Jewish academics, and 1941, as many as half a million persons emigrated from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The United States ultimately admitted the most, about 132,000 immigrants from Germany and Austria, followed by Great Britain with 72,000. The peak year of immigration was 1939 after the November 1938 Krlstallnacht and burning of synagogues. Although initially In 1933 about 72 to 75 percent of all emigres sought refuge In France, by 1938 France could no longer absorb such numbers and people were forced to remigrate.^ Most of the refugees were Jewish, and within groups of intellectuals from two-thirds to four-fifths were Jewish. The estimated number of European refuges who were professionals. Including teachers, arriving in the United States from 1933 to 1944 varies between 22,800 and 25,500 people, according to Maurice Davie's book Refugees in America, published in 1947. More recent estimates are higher. 7 In the United States some 15,000 to 17,000 refound professional employment. A biographical data bank on abut 25, 000 such refugees world wide has been assembled.^ Of these professionals, of course , not all were "intellectuals" and academics. In her 1969 book Illustrious Immigrants Laura Fermi, Enrico Fermi's wife, has surveyed the largely successful experiences of some 1900 such immigrants who had attained an education and usually some stature as a scholar or scientist before moving. She emphasized that this survey, although the most complete one at the time, only represented some fraction of such refugee intellectuals. More current lists of scientists and literary persons, professors and teachers, musicians, sculptors and artists number about 8700. And this does not Include over 2500 writers and an undertermined number of performing artists. The vast majority of the German and Austrian emigres permanently left their countries. Of the over 300 German university faculty and employees who emigrated in the 1930s, only 13 to 17 percent returned after the war.4 Besides Leo Szilard, names of accomplished scientists include Fermi, Luria, Godel, Von Neumann, Bethe, Ulam, and Delbruck, not to mention psychologists such as Alexander.

    Barbara McClintock Lee B. Kass and Paul Chomet Abstract Barbara McClintock, pioneering plant geneticist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983, is best known for her discovery of transposable genetic elements in corn. This chapter provides an overview of many of her key findings, some of which have been outlined and described elsewhere. We also provide a new look at McClintock’s early contributions, based on our readings of her primary publications and documents found in archives. We expect the reader will gain insight and appreciation for Barbara McClintock’s unique perspective, elegant experiments and unprecedented scientific achievements. 1 Introduction This chapter is focused on the scientific contributions of Barbara McClintock, pioneering plant geneticist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of transposable genetic elements in corn. Her enlightening experiments and discoveries have been outlined and described in a number of papers and books, so it is not the aim of this report to detail each step in her scientific career and personal life but rather highlight many of her key findings, then refer the reader to the original reports and more detailed reviews.     New York Debut of German Vocal Ensemble “Singphoniker” Highlights Include a Tribute to the Legendary “Comedian Harmonists” of Weimer Germany In recent decades no other German vocal ensemble of its kind has enjoyed the success afforded to Singphoniker, which makes its New York debut at The Frick Collection on Sunday, February 7, 1999 at 5:00pm One of the most anticipated events in the 60th season of The Frick Collection’s Chamber Music Series, this program reveals the range of this talented group, featuring selections by Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828), Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856), Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847), as well as a set of songs called Berliner Requiem written by Bertoldt Brecht and set to music by popular composer Kurt Weill (1900 – 1950). Reflective of the rich social turmoil in Germany that followed World War I, Berliner Requiem was composed in 1928 and addresses in six selections a range of issues from the economic crisis to growing anti-Semitism. Particularly capturing the imagination of this “sold-out” audience is a tribute to the legendary Comedian Harmonists, the wildly popular vocal group that flourished in Germany before the Nazis forced them to disband in 1934. The original a cappella ensemble is the subject of a movie “Harmonists” that opened the Jewish Film Festival this month and was reviewed by Peter Gay in The New York Times on January 10, 1999. The Comedian Harmonists performed to adoring audiences in Weimar Germany, charming them with lyrics that provided “a clever mixture of schmalz and suggestiveness.” While the original Comedian Harmonists — a virtual cult phenomenon — left behind several treasured recordings of their music, this event at The Frick Collection offers Americans their first sense of what it was like to experience the group live.

AYALA HEODOSIUS DOBZHANSKY was born on January 25, 1900 Tin Nemirov, a small town 200 kilometers southeast of Kiev in the Ukraine. He was the only child of Sophia Voinarsky and Grigory Dobrzhansky (precise transliteration of the Russian family name includes the letter "r"), a teacher of high school mathematics. In 1910 the family moved to the outskirts of Kiev, where Dobzhansky lived through the tumultuous years of World War I and the Bolshevik revolu- tion. These were years when the family was at times beset by various privations, including hunger. In his unpublished autobiographical Reminiscences for the Oral History Project of Columbia University, Dobzhansky states that his decision to become a biologist was made around 1912. Through his early high school (Gymnasium) years, Dobzhansky became an avid butterfly collector. A schoolteacher gave him access to a microscope that Dob- zhansky used, particularly during the long winter months. In the winter of 1915—1916, he met Victor Luchnik, a twenty- five-year-old college dropout, who was a dedicated entomol- ogist specializing in Coccinellidae beetles.

    A Student’s Guide to Cold Fusion Edmund Storms KivaLabs, Santa Fe, NM (updated, April 2012) Abstract Evidence supporting cold fusion (LENR) is summarized and requirements an explanation must take into account are justified. A plausible nuclear-active-environment is identified by ruling out various possibilities and by identifying an environment that is common to all methods used to produce LENR. When this environment is combined with a plausible mechanism, many testable predictions result. These insights and proposals are offered to help clarify understanding of LENR and to suggest future studies. FOREWORD My interest in cold fusion began shortly after Pons and Fleischmann announced their claims in 1989, while I was a conventional research scientist working at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) on methods to produce nuclear energy for applications in space. A Ph.D. in radiochemistry from Washington University in St. Louis gave me knowledge about both material behavior and nuclear interaction. I mention this only because “believers” in cold fusion are sometimes identified in critical writings as being ignorant and/or gullible. The only difference between my approach and that of skeptics was my willingness to explore the idea. Since retiring from LANL 22 years ago, I have continued to investigate the subject using laboratory research and to write papers including several scientific reviews and a book. The large collection of references, now nearly 4000 acquired in this effort, was used to create the original LIBRARY on www.LENR-CANR.org. Jed Rothwell keeps this collection of literature up to date and the website functional. Literature on the subject of cold fusion has grown beyond a point where casual reading can lead to useful scientific understanding.

Milislav Demerec rođen je u Kostajnici 11. siječnja 1895. godine u obitelji Ljudevita i Ljubice Demerec. Poljoprivrednu školu (Više gospodarsko učilište) završio je u Križevcima. Godine 1919. počinje genetička istraživanja kukuruza u grupi profesora R. A. Emersona na Sveučilištu Cornell, gdje 1923. postiže doktorat znanosti. Iste godine postaje stalnim istraživačem u Odjelu za genetiku Camegiejeve institucije iz Washingtona u Cold Spring Harboru, potom 1941. direktorom Biološkoga laboratorija u istome mjestu, a 1943. i direktorom Odjela za genetiku Camegiejeve institucije. Razdoblje od 1943. do 1960. jest ono u kojem je Milislav Demerec direktor obiju srodnih znanstvenih institucija i koje se danas pamti kao »zlatno Demerčevo doba« Cold Spring Harbora. Dr. Demerec je 1960. po sili zakona umirovljen, ali radi i dalje sve do konca života 12. travnja 1966. Nasljedne promjene gena, mutacije, stalan su interes Demerčevih znanstvenih istraživanja, počevši od kukuruza do vinske mušice i naposljetku bakterija probavnog sustava: Escherichia coli i Salmonella typhimurium. Također je istraživao mutageno djelovanje rendgenskog i ultraljubičastog zračenja te neutrona. Među modelima koji su mu služili u istraživanjima bili su i gorostasni kromosomi žlijezda slinovnica vinske mušice, te plijesan roda Penicillium. Sa suradnicima je pronašao mutant te plijesni koji je mogao rasti uronjen u tekući medij, čime je znatno povećana proizvodnja antibiotika penicilina; tako je penicilin po prvi put od svoga otkrića postao široko dostupan i to u vrlo kritičnom razdoblju drugoga svjetskog rata.
