This made a change from Taupo Car Club assisting HRC at Taupo HRC meetings. Thanks to all The Motorsport Club personnel who assisted at the event. It was most appreciated by the Taupo Car Club. On Sunday, in association with Barfoot and Thompson, HRC ran a charity event at Hampton Downs and raised over $16,000 for Starship Foundation and Blind Foundation Guide Dogs. Rides were auctioned on Trade Me for rides on Side car motorbikes. Paul Radisich gave rides in the super lap March owned by Glenn Hodges and Stephen Armstrong made the Alan Moffat replica RX7 available for rides. Not only was it great to raise money these worthy causes it exposed new people to our sport. In the afternoon we ran our one of our successful Introduction to Motorsport events. The format for the day is a drivers briefing, then a walk round the track (this had to be skipped this because of a heavy shower) Then a slow drive round the track (follow the leader) for 6 laps to learn the correct lines.

B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE APRIL 2019 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 37 EDITORSPEAK… Email Trevor at [email protected] Interesting to read President Richie’s piece about inappropriate driving behaviour in the March magazine. I had cause, for the first time in my life, to ring *555 last month. Let me set the scene. A straight piece of road leading out of Waiuku, initially with a 70kph limit, then changing to 100kph about halfway along. At the end of the straight a sweeping ninety right with an intersection right in the middle of it, a notorious spot for accidents. A Ute behind me, and another behind that. As I passed the 100kph sign I put my foot down and went up to 100 as usual. Looked in the mirror to see the last Ute overtake the one immediately behind. No problem, plenty of room and visibility. But...... I looked again and he was just keeping going on the wrong side of the road clearly intent on passing me even though there was equally clearly insufficient room to do so!!! I had to brake hard and veer left to give him room to pull in front as there was no way he was backing off, but even so he was halfway around the bend, with no visibility, before he was able to completely regain the left hand side of the road. If another vehicle had chosen to come the other way God only knows what the mess would have been. Unbelievable. Rare drive. My brother in law has always had good taste in cars, including, amongst others, an HK Monaro and an XU1 Torana back in the day, though latterly it’s been a succession of performance Mercedes, several being of the AMG persuasion.

  • Manawatu Car Club Inc Magazine December 2020
B Manawatu Car Club Inc Magazine December 2020 Page 1 of 52 EDITORSPEAK… email: [email protected] November has been hectic, from both a personal and work view, so I can only apologize that the magazine is a little later than usual. It is my fault entirely. The stress involved with finally selling our property in Auckland and organizing making the big move back to the Manawatu happen at the end of November (without a home to go to as I write) has just added to the pressure of being busy at work. I didn’t realize just how much “stuff” we had accumulated, all of which needed to be moved somewhere, although a very thorough cull went on and rest assured most of it wasn’t car related!! Plus, we have been trying to work out how to deal with the animals which we want to bring down. Add in some rather awkward buyers and the stress levels have been pretty high. Uncertainty ahead, hell no, only opportunities if I can open my eyes wide enough to see them!! Although I worked at the yard the weekend of the MG Classic meeting, I did make it over to the circuit on Sunday (my first time at this meeting for some years) to support Ian who was racing his XR8. And what a great meeting it was. Beautiful weather, a huge grid of Central Muscle cars, in fact BIG grids in every class, and superb racing, with MCC members featuring prominently. There are certainly some stunning race cars out there and even a wander through the carpark found some gems.
