An error had seen La La Land initially awarded the prize, but confusion swept the stage after the producers of the film, halfway through their speeches, discovered a mix up. Moments earlier, acting legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had taken centre stage to announce the Best Picture winner. Little did they know that Beatty had been handed the wrong winner’s envelope, his card instead saying Emma Stone had won Best Actress. Clearly unsure of what to do, Beatty showed the card to Dunaway who promptly declared La La Land the winners. Cue wild celebrations from the La La Land team, including Stone, Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle. Slowly, the mood on stage changed. Producer Jordan Horowitz eventually announced there had been a mistake. He held up the correct card and said: “This is not a joke – Moonlight is Best Picture.” Beatty then returned to explain the envelope saga. A hesitant round of applause soon burst into life as the Moonlight crew made their way forward. Barry Jenkins, the director of the newly crowned winner, was visibly stunned as he claimed the famous statuette. He said: “Very clearly even in my dreams this can't be true.” He paid tribute to the La La Land team’s handling of the situation, adding: “We have been on the road with these guys and it was so gracious and so generous of them.” Accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCooper, who are responsible for counting the ballots, immediately apologised . In a statement they said: “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered it was immediately corrected. “We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.” The accountants in charge, Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, have been told by Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs that they will not be employed to do the job again.
